Laurel River (Credit: Woodside Park Stud)

Laurel River – a Group 1-winning son of record breaking stallion Into Mischief (Harlan’s Holiday) – will shuttle to Woodside Park Stud in 2026.

The Eddie Hirsch-owned Victoria-based farm has struck a deal to bring the former Juddmonte-owned Dubai World Cup (Gr 1, 2000m) winner to Australia from his northern hemisphere base at Japan’s Big Red Farm, presenting Australian breeders a rare chance to access Into Mischief bloodline through a world class champion racehorse.

What's On

Born at Juddmonte Farms’ US base in Lexington, Kentucky, Laurel River campaigned successfully in the silks of the late Prince Khalid bin Abdullah. Predominantly a sprinter miler, Laurel River won six of his 11 starts and over US$7.5 million (approx. AU$10,404,750) in prize money.

His racing style reflects his pedigree: an explosive mix of Into Mischief speed and precocity with enough stamina to dominate the world’s best over 2000 metres.

Laurel River’s career began in the Southern California barn of trainer Bob Baffert and his talent was evident early, breaking his maiden at his second start by four and a half lengths over 1300 metres before a second in the Lazaro Barrera Stakes (Gr 3, 6.5f) at his third start.

His subsequent US campaign culminated with a dominant victory in the Pat O’Brien Stakes (Gr 2, 7f) defeating elite-level winners American Theorem (American Pharoah), Speaker’s Corner (Street Sense), Senor Buscador (Mineshaft) and Get Her Number (Dialed In) and ultimately a switch to Dubai-based trainer Bhupat Seemar.

Following a Group 3 romp in the Burj Nahaar (Gr 3, 1600m) at Meydan, Laurel River was tested beyond the mile for the first and only time in his career, resulting in his crowning moment; a record breaking, eight and a half-length victory in the US$12 million Dubai World Cup.

Laurel River was subsequently named Longines World's Best Racehorse in 2024, with a World Thoroughbred Rating of 128, equal to City Of Troy (Justify) and above the likes of Via Sistina (Fastnet Rock) and Romantic Warrior (Acclamation).

Woodside’s stallion nominations manager Mark Dodemaide is enthused to have a stallion of Laurel River’s calibre join the roster.

“He was an outstanding racehorse, when you are rated 128 and equal best horse in the world, you are at the top of the tree,” he said.

“I really encourage breeders to look at his Dubai World Cup win. He jumps from the outside barrier, goes to the front and then at the 800 metre mark, Tadhg O’Shea releases the brakes, kicks away and ends up winning by eight lengths. You have to have a super set of lungs to do that. It’s one of the best performances you will ever see on a racetrack.

“He profiles like Street Cry. They both started their careers with half a dozen runs in Southern California before going to Dubai, they both won the Dubai World Cup at their tenth start and were forward, on speed horses.”

Whilst his racetrack credentials are undeniable, being a son of a super stallion was irresistible to Woodside.

He profiles like Street Cry. They both started their careers with half a dozen runs in Southern California before going to Dubai, they both won the Dubai World Cup at their tenth start and were forward, on speed horses

Mark Dodemaide

“He’s by Into Mischief, a seven times [in succession] leading sire in America,” Dodemaide said.

“When you put that into perspective, Danzig won it three times, Mr Prospector won it twice, Storm Cat won it twice. I really think it’s time to have a crack at this sire line. Especially when that sire line is known for early speed that trains on.”

Given the success of other sons of Into Mischief at stud, it is easy to see why Woodside are so excited to present this opportunity to Australian breeders.

“Into Mischief is a freak stallion and proven sire of sires. His son Practical Joke, 54 stakes winners, 12 at Group 1 level. Goldencents, 33 stakes winners, three at Group 1 level,” Dodemaide enthused.

“If you compare them physically, Laurel River is in the same mould as his famous sire.”

Into Mischief and his sons have had consistent success with a broad spectrum of sirelines and Dodemaide is excited about the new opportunities to match Laurel River with new Australian broodmare sires.

“He goes well with Mr Prospector, there have been over 150 stakes winners, 50 Group 1 winners bred on the Into Mischief – Mr Prospector cross and three of those are Kentucky Derby winners in Sovereignty, Authentic and Mandaloun.

Into Mischief (Credit: Spendthrift Farm)

“Daughters of Street Cry, Street Boss, Pride Of Dubai, and Too Darn Hot would be ideal. The Into Mischief – Danzig cross is responsible for 114 stakes winners of which 18 were Group 1 winners. Mares by Exceed And Excel, Fastnet Rock, Redoute’s Choice, Shamus Award and Magnus, etc. would suit. Both Bernardini and Medaglia D’Oro mares have had positive results with Into Mischief.

“The interesting one that stands out to me is Distorted Humor. People forget this US champion sire stood two seasons in Australia.

“Even if you had a mare whose grand-dam or third-dam is by him, I would find it hard to turn your back on the 28 stakes winners, of which seven were Group 1 winners. Into Mischief is something new to this part of the world but is something extremely successful.”

When a new first-season stallion has a world class pedigree and proven performance they demand attention and Laurel River will be no exception at a fee of $22,000 (inc. GST) pay on live foal.

“We think this represents great value with the boxes that he’s ticked. Eddie and general manager Anthony Bueti have an unwavering commitment to the Victorian industry and want to remain affordable for all Australian breeders.”

Laurel River joins the Woodside roster alongside Celestial Legend (Dundeel), Benbatl (Dubawi), Shalaa (Invincible Spirit), Rich Enuff (Written Tycoon), Foxwedge (Fastnet Rock) and Delaware (Frankel).

Morning Briefing

Australia

Smooth Chino back to winning form in Northam Stakes

The Indianna Weinert-trained Smooth Chino (4 g Maschino - Amorei by Gingerbread Man) took his career stakes tally to three when landing Sunday’s Northam Stakes (Gr 3, 1300m) at Northam. Ridden by Austin Galati, the four-year-old gelding defeated Fluro Neuro (Gingerbread Man) by 0.9 lengths with a further 0.7 lengths back to West Star (Playing God) in third place. Sunday’s win adds to Smooth Chino’s victories in the Black Heart Bart Stakes (Listed, 1200m) and Magic Millions WA 3YO Trophy (RL, 1200m).

Group 1 target for Recon

Having landed a maiden stakes win in the Hareeba Stakes (Listed, 1200m) last time out, the Pat Carey-trained Recon (Cosmic Force) is being lined up for a crack at Saturday’s The Goodwood (Gr 1, 1200m). The four-year-old gelding scored by 1.5 lengths in the Listed race on April 18, and Carey feels his rapid improvement from handicaps to stakes company means a run in The Goodwood is not beyond the son of Cosmic Force's (Deep Field) ability. "After he won the Harbeeba, he jumped something like 17 [ratings] points, so it ruled out a lot of the last bit of progress through the grades he had," Carey, who trains in partnership with Harris Walker, said. "So, he's basically obliged to run in sort of Listed-plus races now, anyway. We still think that there's more to come with him at 1400 metres and maybe further, but he deserves his opportunity at this level, at this time of his career. He's been kept up to the mark, he had a nice gallop on the course proper at Mornington today and he's continued to hold good form," Carey said from Bendigo on Saturday. “We're optimistic about where his future is going to take him."

Lipp optimistic with El Pensador

Toowoomba-based trainer Rex Lipp is hoping that El Pensador (So You Think) can get back into the winner's enclosure when he lines up at Ipswich on Monday. The five-year-old gelding lines up in a Benchmark 68 (1350m) handicap and will be bidding to gain his first win since last July, which coincidentally also came at Ipswich. A first-up third in a Benchmark 65 (1400m) at Eagle Farm on April 8 has the son of So You Think (High Chaparral) set for Monday's contest. "Last preparation I just had a few little niggling things from after he came up from Melbourne," Lipp said. "It took a while to sort him out, but he seems to be back on track now. I wanted to give him another run over the 1350 [metres] before I step him up to the mile. He's going to run a mile, even 1800 [metres] this horse, but I just want to get him right." Lipp's other runner at Ipswich also joined him from Victoria, with Arcelia (Sea The Moon) to have her second start for the trainer in the Great Northern Maiden Handicap (1200m). "It's taken a while to get her right, get her balanced and get her going," Lipp said. "She went to Melbourne, so we've had to get her going the other way, but I give her a good chance if everything pans out ok in the run."

Sepals back on track for Brown

Sepals (Credit: Sportpix)

The Cliff Brown-trained Sepals (Calyx) is being geared up for a Brisbane campaign after having had a spell in the paddock. The four-year-old gelding landed last year's Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) and Brown has the Stradbroke Handicap (Gr 1, 1400m) at Eagle Farm on June 13 as his main focus. A seventh placing in the Doncaster Prelude (Gr 3, 1500m) when last seen in March saw Sepals sent for a little break, something that Brown feels has benefited the son of Calyx (Kingman). "He had ten days off and he's come back in tremendous order," Brown said. "He just wasn't himself, but he seems right now. I don't think he appreciated the track up in Sydney, but just afterwards when we got him home, he just wasn't himself. We know him intimately and he wasn't right. I gave him a jump-out, which was ok, without being great, but then he had the ten days off and I thought, if he's ok, we'll be able to continue on and if he's not, we'll go to the paddock. At this point he seems good and if he's right, we'll head up to Queensland, and he can have a run at the end of the month with the aim of hopefully getting him to the Stradbroke."

Thornton back in winner’s enclosure in Victoria

Jockey Damien Thornton posted his first win back in his home state of Victoria on Sunday, riding the Anthony and Sam Freedman-trained Thalestris (I Am Invincible) to success in the card-opening 1100-metre maiden at Sale. The $1.8 million yearling purchase was winning at the third time of asking, defeating Ulfberht (Anders) by 1.8 lengths, and Thornton revealed post-race that he felt it time to return to his home state. “It was time to come home,” Thornton told Racing.com. “Queensland was great and I had plenty of success, but this is home and I certainly enjoy it a bit more.”

Yulong appoints Sedgwick as NSW nominations manager

Yulong has strengthened its stallion nominations team with the appointment of Allison Sedgwick as NSW nominations manager. The move follows the operation’s expansion in the Hunter Valley, including the acquisition of Segenhoe Stud and the development of a second stallion base. Sedgwick brings extensive global and domestic experience to the role, having completed the National Stud course in Newmarket before working across Kentucky, South Africa and France. She later spent 11 years with Darley and most recently held the position of head of sales at Kia Ora Stud. “I’m thrilled to be joining Yulong at such an exciting time,” Sedgwick said. “With a second Hunter Valley farm and new stallions coming on board, there is plenty to focus on and I look forward to working with breeders this season.” Yulong chief operating officer Sam Fairgray said the appointment was a key addition to the operation’s growth. “Allison is highly respected within the industry and will play an important role in driving the strength of our stallion roster alongside Victorian nominations manager Harry King,” he said.

Vegas Queen back on top at Te Rapa

Vegas Queen (Credit: Race Images)

Group 2 winner Vegas Queen (Proisir) returned to winning form at Te Rapa on Saturday when taking out the Jones Trucking 1200 (1200m), much to the relief of trainer Kenny Rae. The Ruakaka horseman said he went into the race in blind faith, having been unable to find a suitable trial in the lead-up to her fresh-up run. However, he was sure he had her cherry ripe for Saturday’s assignment and his judgment was vindicated when the daughter of Proisir (Choisir) ran away to a 0.9 lengths victory over Moschino (Ten Sovereigns). “It was relief more than anything,” Rae said. “I was 98 per cent sure I had the horse right and ready but without the trial, and working her at home against our own horses, I wasn’t 100 per cent sure. But it was a really good effort.” Following two victories late last year, Vegas Queen put in a couple of uncustomary subpar showings earlier this year, and Rae was pleased to see her back to her usual self on Saturday following a freshen-up. “We have had a couple of mishaps with her and her bloods weren’t 100 per cent,” Rae said. “After Karaka Millions night [15th in Aotearoa Classic] we probably should have turned her out then [before running 13th in the Wairere Falls Classic].” Rae has a high opinion of Vegas Queen, so much so that he sent her stakes-winning stablemate Illicit Dreams (Vancouver), who he part-owns, south to his daughter Krystal Williams to campaign in Canterbury to separate them. “I think she [Vegas Queen] is a very tidy animal,” Rae said. “I sent Illicit Dreams down to Christchurch to Krystal for that reason.”

JPN: Croix Du Nord lands third Grade 1 in Tenno Sho

Having landed Grade 1 contests as a juvenile and a three-year-old, the Takashi Saito-trained Croix Du Nord (4 c Kitasan Black - Rising Cross by Cape Cross) registered a Grade 1 victory as a four-year-old on Sunday when landing the Tenno Sho (Spring) (Gr 1, 3200m) at Kyoto. Ridden by Yuichi Kitamura, the four-year-old son of Kitasan Black (Black Tide) narrowly denied Wurttemberg (Kitasan Black) by a nose, emulating his sire who won the Tenno Sho (Spring) in 2016 and 2017. There was a further half-length back to the third-placed Admire Terra (Rey De Oro).

UK: True Love dominates the finish to land English 1,000 Guineas

Last year’s Cheveley Park Stakes (Gr 1, 6f) winner True Love (3 f No Nay Never - Alluringly by Fastnet Rock) took her three-year-old record to two wins from as many starts as she produced an impressive performance to land Sunday’s English 1,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1m) at Newmarket. Ridden by Wayne Lordan for trainer Aidan O’Brien, the daughter of No Nay Never (Scat Daddy) had made a winning reappearance in the Priory Belle Stakes (Gr 3, 7f) last month and, with fitness assured, claimed her second Group 1 in great style. Travelling well on the near-side of the split pack of runners, True Love was sent about her business entering the final two furlongs and found plenty inside the closing stages to run out a dominant one and a quarter lengths winner over Evolutionist (Night Of Thunder). There was a further half-length back to Venetian Lace (Masar) in third place. "It was a bit of a question mark stepping up to a mile as she's got loads of pace but she settled really well," Lordan said. "She's so big and is progressing all the time. Getting the mile as well as she did has opened up so many more options for her."

25 for New Bay

Ballylinch Stud stallion New Bay (Dubawi) chalked up his 25th individual stakes winner on Sunday when Jennifer Jane (3 f ex Enlace by Shamardal) ran out an impressive all-the-way winner of the Pretty Polly Stakes (Listed, 1m 2f) at Newmarket. 26 for New Bay

Having chalked up his 25th individual stakes winner earlier in the day courtesy of Jennifer Jane’s win in Newmarket’s Pretty Polly Stakes, Ballylinch Stud stallion New Bay sired his 26th individual stakes winner later in the day on Sunday when Royal Bay Cen (3 f ex Royal Razalma by Lope De Vega) dominated the finish of the Polonia Stakes (Listed, 5.5f) at Cork. Ridden by Ben Coen for trainer Johnny Murtagh, the three-year-old filly cleared away inside the final furlong to beat Quiet Mutiny (Starman) by nine lengths. There was a further half-length back to Oh Cecelia (Starspangledbanner) in third. A sister to winner Lady Razalma and a half-sister to winners Royal Pippen (Make Believe) and Belisa De Vega (Fascinating Rock), Royal Bay Cen is the seventh foal out of the Group 3-winning mare Royal Razalma (Lope De Vega).

UK: No worries for Asfoora team after return

Despite running down the field in Saturday's Palace House Stakes (Gr 3, 5f) at Newmarket, both trainer Henry Dwyer and jockey Oisin Murphy have said that there is no worry on the wellbeing or form of star mare Asfoora (Flying Artie). “She broke lovely as usual and she loved super, but she hit a brick wall at the furlong pole,” Murphy told Racing.com. “It was a real end-to-end gallop and she will come on a tonne from it and I look forward to Haydock. The conversation is whether to have blinkers on her next time or not. She’s honest enough to win without them, but she’s just a bit sharper when they’re on.” In a post on X on Saturday, Dwyer said: “A nice pipe-opener for Asfoora today at her seasonal reappearance. She clearly felt the pinch late but wasn’t given a gut buster and will be much better for it come Haydock Park in three weeks."

26 for Curlin

Hill ‘N Dale Farms stalwart Curlin (Smart Strike) was handed his 26th individual elite-level winner when Golden Tempo (3 c ex Carrumba by Bernardini) left it late to land Saturday’s Kentucky Derby (Gr 1, 10f) at Churchill Downs. Ridden by Jose Ortiz for trainer Cherie DeVaux, who became the first female trainer to land the prestigious Grade 1, the colt came from the rear of the field in the home straight and collared Renegade (Into Mischief) by a neck on the line. There was a further three-quarters of a length back to Ocelli (Connect) in third. "I don't think I have any words right now," DeVaux said. "I'm just so happy for Golden Tempo and Jose, who did a masterful job of getting him there because he was so far out of it. I want to say thank you to the team of St Elias and Phipps Stable [owners] for giving me the opportunity to be here. I'm glad I can be a representative of women everywhere that we can do anything we set our minds to." Bred and raced by Phipps Stable and St Elias Stable, Golden Tempo is the only winner from three foals out of the Grade 3-winning Bernardini (A.P. Indy) mare Carrumba. He is the first Kentucky Derby winner for Curlin, who was standing at a fee of US$225,000 (approx. AU$312,500) but has been taken off the Hill ‘N Dale roster for the remainder of the season due to low fertility issues.

There was a further length and a half back to Honey Dutch (Knicks Go) back in third. Bred and raced by Jerry Amerman's Amerman Racing Stables, Stark Contrast is the first foal out of the Quality Road (Elusive Quality) mare Catch The Eye, who was a Graded-placed winner on the track. Caravaggio is standing at the JBBA Shizunai Stallion Station for a fee of ¥3,000,000 (approx. AU$26,630).

Shinzo (Credit: Coolmore)

Inspections for this week’s Inglis Australian Weanling Sale moved up a notch at Riverside Stables on Sunday with growing interest around the first foals of Shinzo (Coolmore), Ozzmosis (Newgate), Native Trail (Darley), King’s Gambit (Newgate) and Hawaii Five Oh (Vinery).

Shinzo (Snitzel) ticks all the boxes as a Golden Slipper (Gr 1, 1200m)-winning son of Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice) and broodmare owners flocked to him in 2024. He was our most popular freshman that year and that’s been reflected in a quality selection of his youngsters by 11 different vendors over two sessions on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Lot 43 is a Shinzo filly offered by Noorilim Park who’s a half-sister to Blue Diamond Preview (F) (Gr 3, 1000m) winner Miss Roseiano (Exceed And Excel) from the famed family of Eight Carat (Pieces Of Eight).

“She’s a belter,” Noorilim’s Glen Garrick said. “A beautiful mover, lovely hip, shoulder and deep girth. One of the better fillies we bred last year.”

Lot 145 is a strongly built bay colt offered by Riverstone Lodge. He’s a Shinzo three-quarter brother to Group 2-winning sprinter Splintex (Snitzel) who is making a name as a leading first-crop sire in Western Australia this season.

Lot 325 is a leggy filly offered by Alma Vale Thoroughbreds from imported stakes winner Josdesanimaux (Leroidesanimaux).  “She’s a very good type and is a half-sister to multiple Hong Kong winner Amazing Kid,” Oscar Engelbrecht said.  “We also have a Shinzo – Hell’s Fury filly (Lot 297) related to Every Rose.”

Lot 331 is a forward looking filly from Kela’s Turn (Kela) offered by Lime Country Thoroughbreds. “She‘s a cracker of a first foal,” Greg Griffin said. “Well-made and muscled with plenty of scope. Her dam is from the Mr Prospector sireline and she’s being sold on behalf of one of our breeding partnerships.”

Lot 412 is the sole Shinzo entry from Coolmore and he’s a well-grown first foal from My Xanadu, a Fastnet Rock (Danehill) half-sister to black-type winner He’s Heaven (Zoustar).  Their dam Lights Of Heaven (Zabeel) won a South Australian Oaks (Gr 1, 2000m) and the latest stakes winner from the family is this year’s New Zealand Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) winner Road To Paris (Circus Maximus).

Lot 443 is a big, strong colt offered by Tyreel Stud. He’s the second foal of stakes-winner Pacific Dragon (Charm Spirit) whose yearling filly by The Autumn Sun (Redoute’s Choice) made $650,000 at the Gold Coast Magic Millions in January to the bid of James Harron, Michael Freedman and Tony Fung.

“Pacific Dragon is a neat mare and Shinzo is a big boy bred for speed,” Tyreel owner Linda Monds explained. “He’s a lovely physical so that worked and he’s one of our standouts.”

Newgate has catalogued colts from Iamican (I Am Invincible) (Lot 310) and Miss Alacrity (Munnings) (Lot 383).

“Shinzo is stamping his stock with the same physical presence,” Newgate’s Beirs Jackson said.  “The Miss Alacrity colt is being offered as agent for Belinda Bateman and the dam’s Frankel colt made $1 million at the Magic Millions in January.”

The market has already targeted Shinzo stock on the ground and in utero. Blueblood mare Atlantic Emerald (Galileo) was sold with a PPT to Shinzo for $410,000 to Justin Carey at the Inglis online Australian Broodmare Sale last week.

The Irish-bred mare is a daughter of Champion Australian 3YO Filly Atlantic Jewel (Fastnet Rock) who was the Autumn Glow of her time, winning at Group 1 level in the Caulfield Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m), Thousand Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m), Memsie Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) and All Aged Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m).

“Shinzo is proving to be hugely popular, to the surprise of nobody, and he should have a great week at the Foal Sale,” Carey said.  “At this stage, the plan is for Atlantic Emerald to go back to Shinzo once we foal her down in a few months.”

Newgate three-peats by Ozzmosis and King’s Gambit

Newgate is offering the first foals of Ozzmosis, who is being spoken about as the heir apparent to his sire Zoustar (Northern Meteor).

He’s the fourth generation of an exceptional sireline of Coolmore Stud Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) winners, following Encosta De Lago, Northern Meteor and Zoustar.

Ozzmosis (Credit: Newgate)

“I can say with absolute certainty Ozzmosis is the best and fastest I’ve ever trained,” Bjorn Baker said.  “Superlatives are used too loosely with these colts but I’m telling you without any doubt this horse was different.”

Ozzmosis has 143 first-crop foals on the ground this season. “They’re straightforward with plenty of length and quality from books of fast, sharp mares,” Newgate’s Bruce Slade said.  “And they have the Zoustar head, leg, muscle and momentum.”

Ozzmosis had his first in-foal mares sell for $400,000, $320,000, $250,000 and $225,000 last year and there are 19 of his weanlings parading this week at Riverside, including three fillies from Newgate.

His Day 1 filly from Wanda’s Legacy (Wandjina) (Lot 113) is being sold by Bhima Stud as agent for Kulnura-based Finniefeirme Stud.

“The filly is uncomplicated and will get along early,” Bhima owner Mike Fleming said. “Ozzmosis was a speed horse and her dam is a half-sister to the Capitalist sprinter Economics who was a 1000-metre stakes winner at Rosehill.”

Newgate has another three-peat of first-crop foals by King’s Gambit (I Am Invincible). “He’s a magnificent stallion and is siring great-looking stock,” Slade added. “He won a Debutant Stakes [Listed, 1000m] in Melbourne and a Roman Consul Stakes [Gr 2, 1200m] at Rosehill.

“Our King’s Gambit first-crop are all in the mould of their sire and the colt from Sundarbans [Lot 57] is the best foal from the mare. The filly out of Tilla Rose is a very attractive type and will have her share of admirers.”

Native Trail a man among boys

Darley sire Native Trail (Oasis Dream) represents the same Green Desert (Danzig) sireline that produced I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit) and he was described by trainer Charlie Appleby as a "man among boys" after dominant wins at two in the National Stakes (Gr 1, 7f) and Dewhurst Stakes (Gr 1, 7f).

Native Trail (Credit: Darley)

He clocked faster times than Shamardal (Giant’s Causeway), his son Pinatubo and City Of Troy (Justify) in both juvenile features and he confirmed his class with a Classic victory in the Irish 2000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1m), again running faster than Kingman (Invincible Spirit) and Churchill (Galileo).

Native Trail’s first two books include 25 stakes-winning mares and 18 stakes-producing mares with Godolphin supporting him first-up with 24 mares. His filly from New Zealand-bred mare Sheza Flyer (Tavistock) is one of the standouts for Noorilim Park as Lot 19.

“She is beautifully put together,” Glen Carrick said.  “And her Too Darn Hot filly sold for $120,000 at last year’s Inglis Weanling Sale to Sledmere and Cangon Studs.”

Popular foals by Hawaii Five Oh

Shares in Hawaii Five Oh (I Am Invincible) were snapped up by investors when he joined the Vinery Stud roster in 2024 and that initial book numbered 173 mares.

“He’s been very popular and we have a lovely group of his first foals at home,” Vinery’s Adam White said. “He’s an I Am Invincible and a lot of the breeders went back to him which is a good sign.

“He’s been given a great opportunity by a good group of shareholders and he’s a beautiful horse with a great depth of pedigree.”

Hawaii Five Oh (Credit: Vinery Stud)

Vinery consolidated its stallion operations with Kia Ora Stud last week and its next-door neighbours have a Hawaii Five Oh colt who is a strong, sharp mover from Movader (Invader) (Lot 406) at the Inglis Foal Sale.

Noorilim’s Hawaii Five Oh colt (Lot 267) from a half-sister to QLD Tatt’s Mile (Listed, 1600m) winner Silvera (High Chaparral) is another powerful member of his first-crop.

Over in WA, Gold Front Thoroughbreds owners Alan and Sue Olive had extra reason to celebrate the win of Beyond The Limits (Ole Kirk) at Ascot on Saturday.  His dam Lucky Ana (Lucky Unicorn) has an August filly foal by Hawaii Five Oh and she was covered by him again in September.

Romantic Thor claims Queen Mother Memorial Cup in Hong Kong breakthrough

Romantic Thor (Justify) almost certainly earned a tilt at the Standard Chartered Champions & Chater Cup (Gr 1, 2400m) after the Irish import revelled in rain-affected conditions to claim the Queen Mother Memorial Cup Handicap (Gr 3, 2400m) at Sha Tin on Sunday.

Given a perfectly judged ride, Romantic Thor led throughout to defeat Gentlemen Legacy (Showtime) by half-a-length with Winning Wing (Preferment), one and a quarter lengths further back in third in 2m 30.76s to triumph for the first time in Hong Kong.

Formerly known as Capulet when trained by Aidan O’Brien in Ireland, the Justify (Scat Daddy) gelding won the Dee Stakes (Listed, 1m 2.5f) at Chester in 2024 but struggled to adapt to Hong Kong conditions and battled injuries, prompting trainer Danny Shum to plot a conservative path.

Shum’s patience paid off in spectacular fashion as the five-year-old scythed through yielding conditions to earn a PP bonus of HK$1.5 million (approx. AU$266,080) and the chance at Group 1 company – alongside 14-time Group 1-winning stablemate Romantic Warrior (Acclamation), who is chasing a HK$10 million (approx. AU$1.77 million) Triple Crown bonus after wins in the Stewards’ Cup (Gr 1, 1600m) and Hong Kong Gold Cup (Gr 1, 2000m).

Shum was delighted with Romantic Thor’s performance under jockey Matthew Poon.

“Today he was the front runner - and also put on the fence - he got all the advantages. He's lightweight, he can go in front, he can control the pace. So, he had everything to benefit on his hand,” Shum said.

“Matthew, he controlled the pace fantastic. I always say Matthew is a very good jockey. I think he will [go to the Standard Chartered Champions & Chater Cup] - it'd be nice to have two runners in it.”

Poon and Shum combined to win the Queen Mother Memorial Cup with Butterfield (Setembro Chove) in 2021.

“Danny and I knew he could do this [win over 2400 metres] and today he carried a light weight and he loved the track conditions. Before the race we had confidence he would show something and we’re glad he did,” Poon said.

“I didn’t feel like he was stopping at any stage and after the 1000 metres, I asked him to increase the speed gradually and he was able to continue to the winning post. He was not going to be easy to catch for the other horses because they were also spending energy.

“So, the race worked out pretty much as we expected and we’re very happy it did. Danny has given me a second Group 3 in the same race – Danny is a brilliant trainer and I’m so glad to ride this winner for him.”

Poon completed a race-to-race double when Ricky Yiu’s Volcanic Spark (Wrote) charged late to land the Class 4 Beas River Country Club Handicap (1800m).

John Size continued to edge his way up the 2025/26 trainers’ championship standings with a double, joining forces with Andrea Atzeni to score with Sky Jewellery (The Autumn Sun) in the Class 2 Members Cup Handicap (1600m) and Enthusium (Dubawi) in the Class 3 Conghua Racecourse Handicap (2000m).

Sky Jewellery (Credit: HKJC)

Sky Jewellery claimed a PPG bonus of HK$1 million (approx. AU$177,390), while Enthusium earned a PP Bonus of HK$1.5 million for his connections, while Size praised Sky Jewellery’s toughness and class.

“He's always shown and promised to do this sort of thing, and he's never let us down. That's what good horses do - they overcome adversity. That's how they identify themselves immediately,” he said.

Size’s brace left the 13-time Hong Kong champion trainer with 43 wins for the campaign to trail Mark Newnham (51), Caspar Fownes (50), Danny Shum (50), David Hayes (48) and Francis Lui (45) with 20 meetings left in the season.

Newnham maintained the championship lead with the win of Incredible Moment (Royal Meeting) for Richard Kingscote in the Class 4 The Hilltop In The Valley Handicap (1200m), while Atzeni continued an outstanding season with the win of Lui-trained Baby Sakura (Tagaloa) in the Class 3 Shenzhen Centre Handicap (1400m).

“I think he can be a [Hong Kong] Classic Mile horse for next season - it's an exciting time and it's a race everyone wants to win,” Lui said before closing the meeting with the win of Turquoise Velocity (Zoustar) in the Class 3 Beijing Clubhouse Handicap (1200m) to fan hopes of a second trainers’ title.

“It's a really tight championship; all of the top six could win it and John Size, too,” he said.

Triumphant Warrior (Bungle Inthejungle) led throughout for Jamie Richards and Nichola Yuen to land the Class 5 Celebrating Our Shared Champion Sprint Handicap (1200m), before Chris So teamed with James Orman, who lifted Malpensa (Nicconi) to a narrow victory in the Class 4 Ownership Pride Handicap (1200m).

Zac Purton piloted View All Things (Pride Of Dubai) to success in the Class 5 Racing Heritage Handicap (1400m) for Cody Mo, who believes the Pride Of Dubai (Street Cry) gelding has scope for improvement.

“This horse was a roarer before, and then was very lucky after surgery and he recovered very well. This horse is not a Class 5 horse - it is just the health problem that has stopped his performance,” he said.

“Now after roarer surgery, which has been successful, everything's going okay and I think he will get more wins. He's good enough in Class 4, maybe higher.”

Mo sealed a double with Flying Knight (Toronado) under Karis Teetan in the Class 4 Sha Tin Clubhouse Handicap (1400m).

Hong Kong racing continues at Sha Tin on Wednesday night.
