Off the back of another big week at the yearling sales, Randwick-based trainer Michael Freedman will make the journey to Queensland on Saturday with a quintet of big hopes in stakes races across the Eagle Farm card.

Freedman teamed up with bloodstock agent Andy Williams to secure a filly for $580,000, while also going to $400,000 for a colt in partnership with both Williams and Darby Racing at this week’s Magic Millions National Yearling Sale, with both yearlings being by Newgate Farm sensation Extreme Choice (Not A Single Doubt).

What's On

Both of those yearlings finished in the top four of the highest-priced lots at the sale and, while hitting the heights in the sales ring, Freedman is also hoping to plunder some nice prizes this weekend.

Star mare Manaal (Tassort) will be Freedman’s headline act from his five runners, lining up against ten rivals in the $300,000 Moreton Cup (Gr 2, 1200m) where she is priced at $4.80.

A winner of six races from 19 starts – including the ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) as a juvenile – and over $2.15 million in prize-money, the Emirates Park-bred-and-owned four-year-old has been off since March 14 where she ran ninth in the Coolmore Classic (Gr 1, 1500m).

Freedman revealed that the daughter of Tassort (Brazen Beau), who has also landed four Group 2s and a Group 3 throughout her career, is likely to head to the breeding barn following a two or three-run campaign culminating in the Tattersall’s Tiara (Gr 1, 1400m).

“I think we're going to concentrate on the Tatt's Tiara with her,” Freedman told ANZ Bloodstock News.

“If we'd have run last week then the Stradbroke might have been in the mix, but I doubt we'd be backing up into it now.

“We just want to see her run well on Saturday, she is most likely heading to the breeding barn after this season so we made the plan to give her a two or three-run campaign up there before she heads off to stud so hopefully we see her run well, and if so the Tatt's would likely be her swansong.”

Manaal is the best of three winners from four foals to race out of the Midshipman (Unbridled’s Song) mare Red Lodge, herself a stakes-winning granddaughter of dual Grade 1 winner Memories Of Silver (Silver Hawk), so would be another valuable addition to Emirates Park’s already large breeding barn.

“Emirates are a big breeding operation and she's done amazing for them, winning a stakes race and Group 1 at two and stakes races at three and four, which probably doesn't happen all that often,” Freedman added. “She has done a great job for connections.”

Joining Manaal at Eagle Farm will be quartet Givemethebeatboys (Bungle Inthejungle), Flying Destiny (Flying Artie), Mystical (Exceed And Excel), and Sylph (I Am Invincible).

The first two mentioned will line up in the Lightning Handicap (Listed, 1000m), with Givemethebeatboys ($9) heading the weights on 60 kilograms and Flying Destiny ($6) just behind on 59.5 kilograms.

Givemethebeatboys was a £1.1 million purchase at the high-profile Goffs London Sale back in 2023 before running fourth in the Coventry Stakes (Gr 2, 6f) at Royal Ascot the same week. He arrived in Australia with a rating of 103, being a three-time stakes winner in his native Ireland, and Freedman admits that he has struggled to place the five-year-old gelding.

Michael Freedman

“He has been tough to place to be honest,” Freedman said. “Off the back of some of his earlier performances in Ireland and the UK he came out here with a pretty high rating and being a sprinting type, it is probably difficult to be taking on our sprinters with that type of rating.

“We took him up north to see if we could pick something off, which he was able to do first-up at Eagle Farm.

“He didn't get a great deal of luck in the race at Rockhampton [The Archer], he got tangled up at the back and he'd have been better off being forward as that is the way he races.

“Lee [Freedman] has been very happy with his work since he got back from there and, while he has a bit of weight to carry in a decent race, he could race well enough as this is about his level.”

Meanwhile, Flying Destiny is chasing a fifth consecutive victory and second successive stakes win having landed the Chief De Beers Quality (Listed, 1110m) at Doomben last time out.

“He seems to be in great order. I had a look at him on Monday when I was up there with Lee and he looks fantastic,” Freedman added.

“He is certainly taking his racing well and we've kept him fresh for it.

“Jamie [Melham] has a good association with the horse and he's drawn a nice gate [in three]. He has more weight to carry than last start and at the Gold Coast but he should get a nice run behind the speed again.”

Freedman will also have maiden runner Mystical tackle the Show A Heart (Listed, 1500m), with the daughter of Exceed And Excel (Danehill) seeking a breakthrough success in the $160,000 contest.

Having made five starts to date, Mystical has finished runner-up on two of those occasions and also ran a third placing in a 1300-metre maiden at Illawarra Grange just last weekend, prompting this step up to 1500 metres.

“She ran at Illawarra Grange in a maiden last Saturday and didn't get much luck at all on the inner track there, she was a touch slow out and then ended up behind a wall of horses and by the time she got some room the race was over,” Freedman said.

“I did like the way she hit the line and the headgear she wore for the first time that day definitely helped her.

“It just gave me the impression that the extra distance will suit and we thought we could stay and pick off a maiden here but given it's getting to the end of the season it is worth a try, we could always come back to a maiden after Saturday.

“She is probably a little poorly drawn [in barrier 11], but I had a good chat to Rachel [King] and if she can find a good spot she could run a big race.”

The final runner making up Freedman’s stakes quintet is Sylph, a Yarraman Park homebred that broke her maiden at the tenth time of asking last start and who tackles the $200,000 Queensland Day Stakes (Listed, 1200m).

Ridden by Jamie Melham in the 1200-metre maiden at the Gold Coast, the daughter of Yarraman’s sire sensation I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit) defeated Crash The Party (Brave Smash) by 0.6 lengths, and the runner-up will re-oppose this weekend.

We've grown in size and you pretty much need someone focusing on that side of things, particularly during the yearling sale season. Andy has done all my shortlisting at the sales for the last year and a half and is helping drum up some business and managing clients, so he is very much part of the team

Michael Freedman

“She's a talented filly and we were just keen to give her a bit of confidence last time out so it was nice to see her do it,” Freedman said.

“She got run to less than a length by a filly I have a lot of respect for and who she meets again on Saturday, but it was a big gap back to the third. She has a nice draw and Jamie knows her well now so hopefully she can get a nice run in transit and, although it's a step up from last start, it sets up well for her.”

Returning to matters off the track, Freedman reflected on a great year at the yearling sales, where he has often partnered with Andy Williams.

“Andy is doing a lot of my bloodstock work these days,” Freedman said.

“We've grown in size and you pretty much need someone focusing on that side of things, particularly during the yearling sale season. Andy has done all my shortlisting at the sales for the last year and a half and is helping drum up some business and managing clients, so he is very much part of the team.

“Emirates are fantastic supporters of the stable and they usually give me a couple of homebreds each year and when Hussain [Lootah] moves to buy a yearling or two we usually team up to do that, which is what we did at Inglis Easter this year with a couple of nice fillies acquired there.”

Freedman also welcomed the continued support from other high-profile owners in the game, including Yarraman, James Harron and Godolphin.

“I get lots of good support from James Harron with both his colts and fillies, we have ten or 12 of his colts for the colts syndicate so he's been a great supporter of the stable and we're starting to get a big busy with all the yearlings now,” Freedman said.

“Hopefully we find the next [Golden] Slipper winner in there!

“We have broken in all the yearlings pretty much, barring a couple that were held back after  Inglis Easter.

“We've probably had about 30 or 40 yearlings through to have a look at our Randwick stable. I like to get them in for about a week or ten days just to have a look around and familiarise them with the place before they go back out.

“Then over the next two or three months during winter we bring them in and out and go through the whole education process. Godolphin have also been a great supporter and they have given us nine yearlings this year, so hopefully we have got plenty to look forward to.”

Morning Briefing

Australia

King backs Bruce’s Oaks hope

Trainer Jack Bruce will saddle his first Group 1 runner when Highgrove Rose (King's Legacy) lines up in Saturday's Queensland Oaks (Gr 1, 2200m) at Eagle Farm, with jockey Rachel King hoping to help deliver a memorable result. Bruce, a former racing manager for Bjorn Baker before establishing his own stable, has carefully targeted the Oaks with the filly, who enters the race off a strong preparation that includes a win over 1900 metres on the Gold Coast Polytrack and a runner-up finish against older horses over 2200 metres at Doomben. "It's Jack's first Group 1 runner and he is pretty smart, he wouldn't have aimed any up unless they could run well, so I'd say he has been waiting," King said. "The pressure is on because Jim Clarke bought it, Jack trains it, it's like a family event. If she runs well, Bjorn will be quite proud of all his 'kids'." King partnered Highgrove Rose in a pair of Listed juvenile races during last year's Brisbane winter carnival and said the filly always gave the impression she would excel over longer distances. "She felt like that kind of horse 12 months ago, that she would get up over a trip, and she has done that," she said. "Jack looks like he's done a super job aiming her towards this race. He hasn't asked her too many big questions, apart from that one race where she stood up and ran really well." King believes the filly's experience at staying trips will prove valuable in Saturday's feature. "It is a Group 1, so it's a big step up, but distance-wise, she has had a good grounding coming into the race," she said. "As much as making sure they're going to stay, you want to make sure they're going to relax. They've really got to know to put their head down, and do the right thing to be strong at the end of an Oaks."

Kearney strikes gold with Cripps

Cripps (Credit: Racing Photos)

Ballarat trainer Patrick Kearney celebrated the biggest win of his career when Cripps (Magnus) claimed the Golden Topaz (1200m) at Swan Hill on Friday, overcoming a troubled week to land the $175,000 feature. Named after dual Brownlow medallist Patrick Cripps, the four-year-old gelding fought on strongly under Jett Stanley to defeat the Ciaron Maher-trained Fancify (Niagara) by 0.4 lengths, with Steel Move (Blue Point) a further 1.2 lengths away in third. Kearney revealed after the race that Cripps battled soundness issues throughout the week and was no certainty to make it to the races. "I have had the worst week of my life with this horse," Kearney said. "He couldn't walk on Monday. The whole team at home has just done an absolute fantastic job; my farrier Shane is amazing and my vet Matt is incredible. I've been up all night nearly every night this week with this horse just trying to get him right." Stanley, who completed a race-to-race double on the card, praised Cripps' toughness after doing work early in the run. "He did have to do a little bit of work early, they went a hard tempo and everyone was coming from last to catch us," Stanley said. "He was the last man standing and he out-toughed them."

Begg seeks black type with Biologics

Promising filly Biologics (I Am Invincible) will have another opportunity to prove herself down the Flemington straight when she contests Saturday's VRC Community Race Day Sprint (1200m). Trainer Grahame Begg has identified the Creswick Sprint Series Final (Listed, 1200m) on July 4 as a potential black-type target for the daughter of I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit), who resumed with an impressive victory at Werribee last month. A $700,000 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale purchase, Biologics won on debut at Pakenham before an interrupted spring campaign yielded just two starts, including an unplaced effort in the Cap D'Antibes Stakes (Listed, 1100m) at Flemington. "She's had one go up the straight previously, and obviously she failed, but she wasn't right last preparation and hence she had the couple of runs and then we pulled the pin," Begg said. "It was a weak race at Werribee, but she did it well, ticking the box, winning another race, and then we move forward." Begg scratched Biologics from a midweek Sandown assignment in favour of Saturday's race and believes a strong performance could earn her a shot at valuable black type. "If she can run well on Saturday, we'd be looking at the Creswick Final as that's on in a month's time and it could be an important race for Jonathan Munz to get some black type on the filly," he said. The race has proven a successful pathway for Begg and owner Jonathan Munz before, with Passive Aggressive (Fastnet Rock) winning the 2022 Creswick Sprint Series Final before progressing to multiple Group 2 victories.

Scratchings boost Cumani’s Flemington hand

Think Your Amazing (Credit: Racing Photos)

Trainer Matt Cumani will saddle two runners in Saturday's Melbourne Cup Tour Trophy (2000m) at Flemington after scratchings elevated Think Your Amazing (So You Think) into the field. The withdrawal of early favourite Decalogue (Extreme Choice) has also seen stablemate Brave Danza (Brave Smash) assume favouritism for the $150,000 three-year-old feature as he chases consecutive victories at headquarters. Brave Danza was impressive over the course and distance on May 16 and has now finished in the top three at eight of his ten starts. The gelding rises five kilograms to 59 kilograms and will jump from the outside barrier, but Cumani remains confident he can again measure up. "Obviously he's paid the price handicap wise, but even with the increase in weight I would say he will still be very competitive," Cumani said. Cumani was equally pleased to gain a start for Think Your Amazing, who has not raced since finishing a narrow second over 2238 metres at Werribee in April. "He's had a little let-up just to try and prolong his three-year-old season a little bit so that we can try and get to the Mahogany Series Final," Cumani said. "But he would probably need the run on Saturday." Think Your Amazing has won one of his three starts – a 2000m maiden at Geelong – and will be ridden by Eoin Walsh. Brave Danza, meanwhile, will again be partnered by apprentice Luke Cartwright as he looks to add to his last-start Flemington victory.

Kaleo looks to extend Johnstone’s hot streak

Promising gelding Kaleo (Churchill) will benefit from the three-kilogram claim of in-form apprentice Jabez Johnstone when he lines up in Saturday's Play On, For Neale (1600m) at Flemington. The Tasmanian apprentice has made an immediate impact since joining the Ciaron Maher stable on a three-month loan, riding four winners since Sunday, including a double at Sandown on Wednesday. Johnstone partnered Kaleo when the gelding finished second to stablemate Siriusly Hot (Too Darn Hot) over 1600 metres at Sandown last start and will retain the ride this weekend. "We think this is his trip, for now, especially with the claim and the soft ground too at Flemington, we think it's a nice race for him," assistant trainer Jack Turnbull said. "He's a lot more straight forward now. He used to have a think about it a bit last prep, but now as a gelding, he's just a racehorse. We feel it's a good opportunity for him to pick up a Saturday race." A winner at Caulfield as a two-year-old, Kaleo was tested in stronger company during the spring and has returned this preparation with consecutive runner-up finishes. Turnbull said Johnstone's ability to utilise his full claim while remaining a strong rider was proving a valuable asset to the stable. "When you can take three kilos off, and you're of his stature as a rider, being left-handed, it's an asset," he said. "All those little factors add up and I'm sure he will be an asset to the stable over winter." Saturday's race is a heat of the Silver Bowl Series, with Kaleo already qualified for the final at Flemington on July 4 courtesy of his last-start placing.

Big Red Tequila primed for Randwick return

Promising mare Big Red Tequila (Shamus Award) will launch her latest campaign at Randwick on Saturday with trainer Joe Pride confident she can continue her rise through the grades. The four-year-old resumes in the Cornerstone Risk Group Handicap (1000m) after winning three of her four starts during the summer and boasts an unbeaten record at the distance. "She's a nice mare who has come back really well," Pride said. "She has trialled up well and the 1000 [metres] fresh will be perfect for her. She won over 1000 first-up last time, and she will take a power of beating." A daughter of Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m) winner Shamus Award (Snitzel), Big Red Tequila has been patiently handled by Pride, making her debut as a late three-year-old before steadily working her way through the grades. With Sam Clipperton retaining the ride from barrier three, Pride believes the mare has the talent to eventually earn a shot at stakes company. "I'd expect her to eventually," he said. Pride will also be represented by Dear Jewel (Snitzel), who has not finished further back than fourth in six runs this preparation and was last seen finishing third behind Saturday's rival Prima Bella (Per Incanto) at Randwick. "She's honest and reliable. This is the top of her grade, as in she probably can't progress past this, but she is fit and well, she has drawn well and she will run a cheeky race," Pride said. Andrew Adkins has the mount on Dear Jewel from gate two.

Baker juvenile on target at Rosehill trials

Friday’s Rosehill barrier trials showcased promising unraced Juveniles, with six heats highlighting future contenders by Zoustar (Northern Meteor), I Am Invincible, D’Argento (So You Think) and first-season sire Acrobat (Fastnet Rock). I Am Invincible filly Kotor impressed with a 5.6-length win for Rachel King. The $850,000 Inglis Easter purchase is a full-sister to Doveton Stakes (Listed, 1200m) winner Garza Blanca and half-sister to two more black-type performers. Acrobat colt Stormin’ remained unbeaten at trials, leading throughout to score by 0.8 lengths over Internal Affairs (Home Affairs) and Defensemen (Wootton Bassett). Stormin’ is the third foal of metro-winning Written Tycoon (Iglesia) mare Wooshka. Zoustar colt Midnight Charter, an $675,000 Inglis Easter purchase, bounced back from a poor first trial to lead and win by 1.2 lengths. He is a half-brother to Group-winning fillies Tenley (Medaglia D'Oro) and Biscayne Bay (Sebring), from the family of Golden Slipper (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Vancouver (Medaglia D'Oro). The Bjorn Baker-trained grey filly D’Unicorn (D’Argento) also caught the eye, running level with experienced filly Tigroni (Tiger Of Malay) at her first public trial. The $105,000 Magic Millions Book 2 purchase is the first foal of Cosmology, a Deep Field (Northern Meteor) granddaughter of Group 1 winner La Baraka (Euclase). Additional winners included Predation (Capitalist) and Light River (Pierata), rounding out an impressive morning of juvenile trials.

Ellerslie test to shape Free Bird’s spring

Free Bird (Credit: Race Images)

Well-related mare Free Bird (Tarzino) will tackle a middle-distance trip for the first time when she contests the Golf Warehouse Handicap (2100m) at Ellerslie on Saturday, with trainer Kerry Greene hopeful the daughter of Tarzino (Tavistock) can stamp herself as a future staying prospect. A half-sister to dual Group 1 winner Stolen Dance (Alamosa), Free Bird heads into the assignment in strong form after winning over 1600 metres two starts ago before finishing runner-up over the same trip at Ellerslie last start. “She is doing really well,” Greene said. “She has kept improving with every run this prep and we are really excited to see her step up to a middle distance for the first time.” Greene believes the mare will be well suited by the expected Soft 6 conditions. “She is a horse that really likes those in-between tracks,” he said. “She seems to struggle when it’s too firm or too wet, so the Ellerslie track at this time of year is providing that nice surface that seems to suit her.” While not comparing her directly to her accomplished half-sister, Greene believes Free Bird could develop into a quality staying mare if she handles Saturday's distance rise. “We are going to find out a lot more after Saturday because she has always really looked like a staying prospect,” he said. “She is not Stolen Dance, but she could go on and be a Cups kind of horse for next season if she can stay a strong middle-distance trip. If she can show us she can do that on Saturday she might have an exciting spring campaign ahead.”

Standout season rolls on for Turner

Ebony Turner with Penvose Lad (Credit: Race Images)

Riverton trainer Ebony Turner is enjoying a standout season and heads to Phar Lap Raceway on Sunday with high hopes of continuing her winning streak. Turner, now in her fourth training season, has already secured 11 victories, including a notable win with Who Rox The House (Vadamos) at Wingatui last weekend, extending her lead in the Gavelhouse Newcomer to Training Award. Turner credited careful race planning and distance adjustments for recent successes. Who Rox The House benefitted from dropping back to 1400 metres on a suitable track after struggling over a mile on wet ground. Stablemate Penvose Lad (U S Navy Flag) finished runner-up in the same meeting and is set to contest the Waimate Cup (1600m), with Turner using the race as a fact-finding mission to gauge his suitability for the Winter Cup (Gr 3, 1600m) at Riccarton in August. Turner will also take last-start winner Celestial Flame (Proisir) north to Timaru for the same meeting, aiming to continue the stable's strong winter campaign. Turner praised her horses’ consistency and resilience, noting both are “tough” and promising prospects for the upcoming season. “I am very grateful to all the people who support me and my staff, it has been an excellent season,” she said. “It is pretty nerve-racking coming to the end of it and there is only two wins between us. Hopefully I can stay on top and get that win, but if not, it has still been an awesome season, and I have beaten last season’s personal best.”

HK: Vincent Ho reunites with rising star Hot Delight in Class 2 test

Hot Delight (Credit: HKJC)

Vincent Ho links up again with Francis Lui’s highly regarded three-year-old Hot Delight (Too Darn Hot) as twilight racing returns to Sha Tin on Sunday. The three-year-old has enjoyed a stellar start, scoring impressively in each of his first three outings. Lui, who also trained Hong Kong legend Golden Sixty (Medaglia D’Oro), has previously drawn comparisons between the two at the same stage of their respective careers. Unable to make the minimum weight requirement for Hot Delight’s first foray into Class 2 company last time out, Ho gave way to Harry Bentley aboard the youngster. Although he wasn’t disgraced in that May 9 run – finishing fourth, a length and a quarter behind subsequent Group 3 winner Patch Of Stars (All Too Hard) – Hot Delight will be looking to get back to winning ways in the Class 2 Hong Kong Jockey Club Scholarships Handicap (1200m). Ho is encouraged by the son of Too Darn Hot’s (Dubawi) early progress and already has an eye on his four-year-old campaign. “In the first few races, he won impressively, and I feel like he still has quite some class in hand,” Ho said. “Of course, he’s only three, so we expect him to improve more during the summer. Hopefully, he will mature and improve more next season, too.” Ho says the draw of ten isn’t fatal to Hot Delight’s chances of landing a fourth win of the season. “It is what it is – not the worst. It’s good enough. Let’s see what he can do. Hopefully, he can slot in somewhere easy and he can produce a good run like he did previously,” he added.

41 for Frankel

Juddmonte’s breed-shaping stallion Frankel (Galileo) sired his 41st individual elite-level winner on Friday when Thundering On (3 f ex Thundering Nights by Night Of Thunder) ran out an impressive winner of the Epsom Oaks (Gr 1, 1m 4f) at Epsom. Bred and raced by Shapoor Mistry, Thundering On is the first foal out of the Night Of Thunder (Dubawi) mare Thundering Nights who landed the Pretty Polly Stakes (Gr 1, 1m 2f) in 2021 but died prematurely as a seven-year-old. Frankel is standing at Banstead Manor Stud for a fee of £350,000 (approx. AU$661,970).

UK: Thundering On dazzles with facile Oaks display

Joseph O’Brien was celebrating a second British Classic success on Friday when Thundering On ran out a truly facile winner of the Epsom Oaks.

Ridden by Dylan Browne McMonagle, who was enjoying his first Classic winner in the UK, the filly arrived at the two-furlong marker still on the bridle and, sent about her work approaching the final furlong, shot clear of runner-up Legacy Link (Dubawi) and stormed to a very easy three and three-quarter lengths success.

There was a further six lengths back to the third-placed, and pacesetting, Sugar Island (Dubawi) with A La Prochaine (Lope De Vega) a head further back in fourth.

Race favourite Amelia Earhart (Camelot) could only manage sixth of the nine runners.

"We were coming into the race very confident, obviously the trip was going to be the question mark but she's been doing everything so easy, she's improving with every run and there was never a moment's doubt really,” the winning rider said.

"I didn't really need to count, I was sitting last and I knew there was nothing going to be coming from behind me and I always had everything covered in front. She's got a lot of class. Great training performance from Joseph, everybody does a great job at home and I'm very lucky to be getting my leg across.

"It's unbelievable, this is what we all dream of doing. Coming to these places is where you want to be and riding in these races; coming here this weekend we've got two live chances in Classics, it doesn't usually happen but we've got one ticked off so hopefully roll on to tomorrow.

"The sky's the limit. She's very, very talented so a big well done to everyone and a big thanks to everyone who has got her here and hello to everyone at home in Donegal watching."

Dual Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) winning-trainer O’Brien, whose other Classic winner in the UK was Galileo Chrome (Australia) in the 2020 English St Leger Stakes (Gr 1, 1m 6.5f), added: "The objective was to save as much energy as we could as the distance was the question mark. In the straight it was an easy watch.

"For her to be an Oaks winner is really special and Dylan gave her a fantastic ride."

Thundering On was cut into odds-on favouritism for the Irish Oaks (Gr 1, 1m 4f) next month, while she was also shortened into a general 10-1 chance for October’s Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe (Gr 1, 2400m).

UK: Seagulls Eleven continues resurgence in Diomed Stakes

The Hugo Palmer-trained Seagulls Eleven (4 g Galileo Gold - Thrilled by Kodiac) maintained his good run of recent form when toughing out a success in Friday’s Diomed Stakes (Gr 3, 1m 1/2f) at Epsom. Having won the Prix de Montretout (Listed, 1600m) and run a narrow second in the Prix du Muguet (Gr 2, 1600m) on both of his prior starts as a four-year-old, the son of Galileo Gold (Paco Boy) added another success as he gamely fought off the challenge of 2025 Diomed winner Persica (New Bay) by a nose at the line. There was a further two lengths back to Boiling Point (Too Darn Hot) in third. Seagulls Eleven was Group 1 and Group 2 placed as a juvenile.

68 for Twirling Candy

Lane’s End Farm stallion Twirling Candy (Candy Ride) chalked up his 68th individual stakes winner on Thursday when West End Kid (3 c ex To A Friend by Scat Daddy) scored in the Pennine Ridge Stakes (Gr 3, 8.5f) at Saratoga. The William Walden-trained colt was ridden by Tyler Gaffalione and defeated Blackmail (Not This Time) by a length and a quarter with a further half-length back to the third-placed Bottas (Vekoma). A US$350,000 purchased for his owners Mo Speed Racing at the 2025 Ocala Spring 2YO Sale, West End Kid is a half-brother to winner Baron Of Sealand (Liam’s Map) being out of the Scat Daddy (Johannesburg) mare To A Friend, who herself is a half-sister to Grade 2 winner Starting Over (Liam’s Map). Twirling Candy is standing for a fee of US$75,000 (approx. AU$105,770).

US: Tawny Port lands Melbourne Cup spot via Gold Cup win

The Miguel Clement-trained Tawny Port (7 h Pioneerof The Nile - Livi Makenzie by Macho Uno) booked his spot in November’s Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) when landing Thursday’s Belmont Gold Cup Stakes (Gr 2, 16f) at Saratoga. Ridden by Flavien Prat, the seven-year-old entire has a ballot-free spot in the Cup after defeating Navy Seal (Dubawi) by two and a half lengths in the Grade 2 contest. There was a further six and a half lengths back to Miztertonic (Mission Impazible) in third place. "Going into the race, we were sure that he needed the run," Clement said. "He's seven years old so he's not quite a spring chicken but I guess like French wine, he gets better with age." Meanwhile, winning rider Prat revealed he was yet to visit Australia. "Miguel was confident and he said the distance would be his friend," Prat said. "I've not been to Australia but I guess I'll go. It is still a long way to go but it is very exciting."
