Global superstar Ombudsman reigns supreme with pulsating defence of Prince of Wales’s Stakes crown

ANZ News

In a display of sheer dominance and authority, the John and Thady Gosden-trained Ombudsman (Night Of Thunder) collected his second successive Prince of Wales’s Stakes (Gr 1, 1m 2f) titles on Wednesday to a rapturous reception from the Royal Ascot crowd.

Having run out a brilliant two-length winner of the race in 2025, the five-year-old son of Night Of Thunder (Dubawi) again displayed his potent turn of foot as he staked his claim to be named the world’s best horse in 2026.

In a contest for the ages that included last year’s Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe (Gr 1, 2400m) hero Daryz (Sea The Stars), three-time Oaks winner and Arc runner-up Minnie Hauk (Frankel), and recent Tattersall’s Gold Cup (Gr 1, 1m 2.5f) victor Almaqam (Lope De Vega), Ombudsman trumped them all with a four lengths success under regular pilot William Buick.

What's On

Jumping out to a fair line from the gates, the entire was allowed to settle at the rear of the eight-runner field as the two pacemakers, his stablemate Devil’s Advocate (Too Darn Hot) and the Aidan O’Brien-trained Mississippi River (Lope De Vega), shot off at a blistering pace for the trip.

With the two leaders still well clear rounding the home bend, the chasing pack began to close gradually heading down the home straight.

Buick, who was clearly confident in his mount, still waited with Ombudsman before setting him alight hitting the two-furlong pole as the pacesetters began to falter slightly.

Moving up as a trio, Minnie Hauk, Daryz and Ombudsman soon swallowed up the leaders and looked set to battle it out between them.

However, the Gosden runner soon found his trademark extra gear and shot to the front at the furlong pole, careering away under Buick in devastating style.

O’Brien’s Minnie Hauk stayed on to capture second late on from the Francis Graffard-trained Daryz, who finished a further length and three-quarters back in third.

"I'm privileged to be able to ride these horses, this horse is just an absolute privilege and joy to ride and deal with,” Buick, who was enjoying his 40th Royal Ascot winner, said.

“What he did there was mind-blowing. His turn of foot is that of a miler but he stays ten furlongs, amazing performance.

“John and Thady [Gosden] had him in great shape. I'm the lucky man on top. He's a closer, people want pacemakers because they don't want a falsely run race. I was never too far from the horse I needed to be near and I was comfortable the whole way, it was very smooth and all credit to the horse.

“I've ridden some amazing horses but this horse has an electric turn of foot and he must be right up there."

Wednesday’s success was a fourth at the highest level for Ombudsman, and co-trainer John Gosden said: "Aidan had a pacemaker and we thought we'd have ours doing what we wanted to do as well so they wound up meeting coming into the bend and off the bend so they were obviously agreed on the pace.

"Devil's Advocate, with a furlong to go, I thought they're going to have to go a bit but this horse has got a phenomenal turn of foot, great acceleration for a mile and a quarter horse and he just showed that class.

"Quite something to come away from a field like that. The filly [Minnie Hauk] ran great, the Arc winner [Daryz] ran great, probably the horse who won in Ireland [Almaqam] might not have run his race today because he'd usually be in the shake-up, but overall I thought it was one of the great performances of his career.”

Gosden added that a return to York for the International Stakes (Gr 1, 1m 2.5f), a race Ombudsman won last year following his Royal Ascot victory, would be the likely plan.

"We will watch him and see where we go. The Juddmonte International will be a major target of course, he likes York,” Gosden said.

“We're very lucky to have some wonderful owners to send us those [top-class] horses because let me tell you, you can't train empty boxes.”

Asked about a comparison to Gosden’s prior champion filly and mare Enable (Nathaniel), he said: “He's right up there now with what he's done but you're talking about Enable, you know, she won everything; he's a lovely horse, he'll make a good stallion.

“He's got all the right things, he's got a good mind as well as a fabulous, fabulous body and strength. He's too good to go a mile and a half.”

O’Brien was also delighted with the run of his classy four-year-old Minnie Hauk, with the filly bouncing back from a disappointing fifth of seven behind Almaqam in the Tattersall’s Gold Cup last month.

"We were delighted,” O’Brien said, revealing that the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes (Gr 1, 1m 4f) back at Ascot next month before another crack at the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe likely awaited his filly.

“We thought what happened the last day, she's a mile and a half filly really, and over a mile and a quarter she wanted an end-to-end gallop.

“Obviously that was going to suit the winner as well, by doing that, but she's a mile and a half filly and it was lovely – if the lads want, they can bring her back for the King George, so I couldn't be happier with her.

“She met the horse she ran against in the Arc last year again. She's so straightforward. Ryan rode her very confidently, like there was no doubt about anything today, and he said she kept travelling down the three past the two [furlong pole], and the winner had a little bit more quicken than her over a mile and a quarter.

“The lads will decide what they want to do, but I'd say something like, the King George, one more run and then the Arc, yes. That would work very well. This was the perfect prep for the King George today."

Graffard, however, was a little disappointed in how the race played out for his colt Daryz – who was chasing a fourth Group 1 of his own on Wednesday.

"I don't know what to say, he just didn't have a very good run," the Frenchman said. "They had these two pacemakers that go forward quite clear and my horse was not covered; he never really relaxed and had a chance to take a breath.

"I don't think he travelled relaxed through the race; he was out of his rhythm all the time, and that's why he shortened up his action at the end.

"Ombudsman had a perfect run and didn't have to make any effort up to entering the straight, while we had to make effort all the time. That's the way the race went.

"We didn't see the Daryz of Longchamp when he was nice and relaxed and quickened really strongly. Today he was not like that."

In winning Wednesday’s feature, Ombudsman incredibly became the third Group 1 winner at the royal meeting for Night Of Thunder already, with Darley’s former shuttler having had Bow Echo land Tuesday’s St James’s Palace Stakes (Gr 1, 1m) and Ten Bob Tony score in the Queen Anne Stakes (Gr 1, 1m) on the same day.

Six for St Mark’s Basilica

King Of Cloughan (Credit: Bronwen Healy Photography)

King Of Cloughan (2 c ex Mystic Eyes by Maclean’s Music) provided Coolmore shuttler St Mark’s Basilica (Siyouni) with his sixth individual stakes winner when landing Wednesday’s Windsor Castle Stakes (Listed, 6f) at Royal Ascot. Ridden by Billy Loughnane for trainer Joseph O’Brien, the juvenile colt shot through to the lead inside the final furlong and defeated Moonrise (Churchill) by a half-length. There was a further half-length back to Harlequin Sky (Dubawi Legend) in third place. "We thought we had a good squad coming here and we though they were in good shape and our horses have been running well; to see that translate into some winners this week is really special," the winning trainer said. "I think he's a six furlong horse this season and you'd hope he might end up in something like the Middle Park or something later in the year." King Of Cloughan is the first foal out of the stakes-winning Maclean’s Music (Distorted Humor) mare Mystic Eyes, herself a half-sister to the stakes-placed winner Tempers Flair (Smart Strike) and out of a stakes-winning half-sister to Breeders' Cup Juvenile (Gr 1, 8f) winner Boston Harbor (Capote). St Mark’s Basilica will return to Coolmore Australia for an unchanged fee of $38,500 (inc GST).

UK: Victorious lands the spoils in Queen Mary

Victorious winning the Queen Mary Stakes (Credit: Bronwen Healy Photography)

Victorious (2 f Wootton Bassett - Heaven On Earth by Galileo) moved Aidan O’Brien to within one of a century of Royal Ascot winners when flying home to land Wednesday’s card-opening Queen Mary Stakes (Gr 2, 5f).

Taking her unbeaten record to three, the well-bred daughter of Coolmore’s late shuttler Wootton Bassett (Iffraaj) had landed a Group 3 on her previous start and took her form to another level here as she came home strongly under Ryan Moore to beat Senorita Bonita (Starspangledbanner) by two lengths going away at the line.

There was a further nose back to Ruiva (Munnings) in third place.

"Gorgeous filly, think the world of her, got a lot of talent," Moore said. “She's blind in her left eye, so she can't see anything on this side.

“She's just a sweetheart, she's always shown plenty and is a very natural filly, lot of pace, loads of quality. She's so straightforward, absolutely a peak professional."

O’Brien added: "She's very classy. She's a very smart filly. She's only got [the sight in] one eye, so we were a little bit worried where she was drawn over there, but Ryan was brilliant on her, he reassured her and let her find her way through.

"He got a little group to follow and then took her to the outside, so I think he was brilliant on her. We had her and the filly that's in the Albany and we tried to split them, and everyone thought this filly might be ok over five [furlongs], and obviously she's ideally six and even further.

"I'm delighted for everyone who puts so much into it. It's a big team. She's got a lot of quality and it's very hard to beat quality. Ryan was very good on her, he took his time and let her ease into it, and took her left where she had a clear run.

"Yvonne who rides her every day and Rachel, who rides her in her work, do a great job with her; they're the ones who deal with her every day and nourish and reassure her. She came from Coolmore and I think she lost her sight with a cataract or something when she was a foal or a yearling."

Following the race, Victorious was cut from 33-1 to 12-1 favourite with Paddy Power for the 2027 English 1,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1m), with her pedigree and finishing effort suggesting the trip would be well within range as a three-year-old.

Bred and raced by Coolmore and partners, Victorious is a sister to winner Stellenbosch and a half-sister to Group 3 scorer Sugar Island (Dubawi) being the fourth foal out of the winning Galileo (Sadler’s Wells) mare Heaven On Earth, herself a sister to the outstanding multiple Classic winner Minding and Epsom Oaks (Gr 1, 1m 4f) heroine Tuesday.

UK: Limestone denies Del Maro in riveting Queen’s Vase battle

Limestone (Credit: Bronwen Healy Photography)

Rider Dylan Browne McMonagle enjoyed his second career Royal Ascot success on Wednesday when knuckling down aboard Limestone (3 c New Bay - Modernstone by Duke Of Marmalade) for a gritty victory in the Queen’s Vase (Gr 2, 1m 6f). The Joseph O’Brien-trained colt had previously scored in Listed company back in his native Ireland seemed to relish the further step up in trip, coming home strongly down the centre of the track to deny the Charlie Appleby-trained Del Maro (Camelot) by a nose in a photo-finish to the Group 2 contest. There was a further length back to the front-running Ranga Tang (Lope De Vega) in third place. McMonagle said the race unfolded perfectly from the outset. "I was very happy going to the first turn, he pinged the gates and I rode forward, "I had my options open, if there was a couple going I was happy to follow but if there was no speed I was going to let him stride because he's a big galloper, he's got a lovely cruising speed. A couple went on and gave me a lead which helped." McMonagle said. "He's a very tough horse this fellow and he's improving with every run. He's always doing enough and that's what you want with these kind of horses that are going to stay, horses that just do enough, keep progressing and he's definitely one of them." O'Brien praised both horse and rider after securing his second winner of the Royal meeting. "The horse is very tough and tenacious, it was a close finish but delighted to come out on top. Dylan gave him a fantastic ride," O'Brien said. "He got a great spot and got control of the race which is what we intended to do because we felt our best attribute was a little bit of speed. I thought the Godolphin horse might have just nabbed us but our fellow has been in a couple of photo finishes through his career and he comes out on top, so it's a good trait to have in a racehorse." "I think the sky is the limit for him in terms of a middle-distance and staying horse. He's got better and better with every race, he has an outstanding pedigree and all we can do is see how far he can climb." Following Wednesday’s win, Limestone was shortened into 16-1 from 20-1 for September’s English St Leger Stakes (Gr 1, 1m 6.5f) at Doncaster.

Blue Bolt adds Group success at Royal Ascot

Blue Bolt (Credit: Bronwen Healy Photography)

Blue Bolt (4 f Blue Point - Mayhem by Whipper) continued her rapid progression with a commanding victory in the Duke of Cambridge Stakes (Gr 2, 1m) at Royal Ascot on Wednesday. Trained by Andrew Balding and ridden by Colin Keane, the four-year-old daughter of Blue Point (Shamardal) settled in midfield before travelling strongly into contention approaching the home turn. Moving smoothly through the field, she struck the front over the final furlong and pulled clear to defeat Jancis (Tamayuz) by one and three-quarter lengths – adding a 14th group winner to her sires tally. Friendly Soul (Kingman) finished a further half-length away in third. The victory adds another significant chapter to an already impressive record that includes wins in the Conqueror Fillies’ Stakes (Listed, 1m) and Distaff Stakes (Listed, 1m), while she was also runner-up in last year's Sun Chariot Stakes (Gr 1, 1m). She is the latest standout from a distinguished international family. Her dam Mayhem (Whipper) won the Prix Allez France (Gr 3, 2000m) and is already the producer of multiple black-type performers including Sky Angel (Dark Angel), a Listed winner and runner-up the 2021 German 1,000 Guineas (Gr 2, 1600m), and Sea Theme (Sea the Stars), a Listed winner and Group performer over staying distances. Keane said Blue Bolt's uncomplicated racing style and ability to relax in her races continued to be major assets. "She's a very uncomplicated filly, she's good out of the stalls, can get forward and relax which makes our job easy," Keane said. "She's a high cruiser and quick, she's a nice filly. I think we'll try at Group 1 company at a mile and if we get that box ticked, possibly step up in trip." Andrew Balding said the mare had improved again and her next step was likely a step up to Group 1 company. "She was a high achiever last year and I think she's improved over the winter," Balding said. "We'll obviously be looking at Group 1s now and the Falmouth would be a good fit if she comes out of this okay."

Royal breakthrough for Owen as Rouge Diplomat lands Royal Hunt Cup

Rouge Diplomat (Credit: Bronwen Healy Photography)

Trainer James Owen celebrated his first Royal Ascot winner when Rogue Diplomat (Calyx) produced a career-best performance to capture the Royal Hunt Cup (1m), at Royal Ascot on Wednesday. Ridden By Harry Davies, the four-year-old charged home from his high draw to claim the win at odds of 28-1, providing a memorable success for his owners The Rogues Gallery Syndicate, which includes ITV Racing presenter Rishi Persad. The son of Calyx (Kingman) was coming into the race off a seventh-placed finish in a Listed contest at Longchamp last month and showed improvement on firm ground despite that initially being a question mark. His trainer admitted there had been concerns about the fast ground after his disappointing run in France. "We nearly didn't run him because of the ground," Owen said. "We took him to France, it was very, very quick and he didn't like it. If he hadn't been to France he'd have been second or third favourite for this, that's what we kept looking back at. He needs a straight mile. He's a bloody good horse, ran well in the Lincoln, he was probably a little bit unlucky. It's unbelievable. What a week. This is where I want to be, we've got a great team and we're loving it." Davies was equally emotional after securing his first Royal Ascot winner himself. "It's a little bit overwhelming. Such a special meeting, to come here and try and compete," he said. "This fellow was only beaten a nose in the Lincoln, he's consistent in his grade. He tries very hard. I liked the high draw when it came out. Horses are my life. I was never very good at school and I fell in love with horse racing from a very young age and grew up watching this meeting, so to ride a winner is really, really great."

Haggas’ Alobayyah rewards punters in Kensington Palace Stakes

Well-backed 11-4 favourite Alobayyah (Ghaiyyath) provided punters with plenty to cheer at Royal Ascot on Wednesday when she ran out a narrow winner of the Kensington Palace Stakes (1m). Ridden by Tom Marquand for trainer William Haggas, the four-year-old daughter of Darley shuttler Ghaiyyath (Dubawi) produced a sustained effort inside the final furlong to deny Miss Nightfall (Sands Of Mali) by a neck. There was a further half-length back to Seren Star (Profitable) in third place. "We trained her for a Classic because we thought she was pretty good, and that was the wrong thing to do, she wasn't ready, and she ran very free at Kempton and it set her back three months," Haggas said. "We never really recovered from that. We had lots of other issues, and she's lucky to have some patient owners. It's very easy for a trainer to be patient, but you need the owners to row in with you. It's their first Royal Ascot winner, and I'm absolutely thrilled for them. They will be beside themselves with pride. She's ridden every day by one of our assistants, Izzy Paul - she'll be beside herself. She's done a great job. Everyone says it - I can't remember everyone's name like Aidan - but it's a team effort and I'm just lucky enough to be the chap whose name is on the licence."

Five for Tiger Of Malay

First-season sire Tiger Of Malay (Extreme Choice) recorded his fifth winner when Apex Predator (2 f ex Morganza, by Singspiel) made a successful debut in the 1200-metre juvenile maiden at Doomben on Wednesday. Prepared by Matthew Hoysted and ridden by Jag Guthmann-Chester, the filly started favourite after winning both of her lead-up trials and justified that support with a professional performance. Settled prominently throughout, Apex Predator worked to the front inside the final 100 metres before drawing clear to score 0.6 lengths over My Girl Marley (Zousain). A $35,000 purchase from Glenlogan Park at the Inglis Classic Yearling Sale for Proven Thoroughbreds and Hoysted Racing, Apex Predator is a half-sister to stakes placegetter Brave Danza (Brave Smash). Bred by Glenlogan Park, she is the sixth and final winner from eight runners out of the Singspiel (In The Wings) mare Morganza, a winning half-sister to Group 2 winner Monturani (Indian Ridge) out of stakes winner Mezzogiorno (Unfuwain), who was Group 1-placed in the Oaks (Gr 1, 1m 4f) at Epsom. Apex Predator became Tiger Of Malay’s third metropolitan winner, joining Obambulate and Forest King, while Momentslikethese has already gained black type with a stakes placing. The Group 1-winning son of Extreme Choice (Not A Single Doubt) stands at Newgate Farm alongside his sire at a fee of $11,000 (inc GST).

Baker quartet set for winter campaign via Civic Stakes

Bjorn Baker may be overseas with sprinting star Overpass (Vancouver), but the trainer is poised to launch a strong winter assault at Randwick on Saturday with four runners engaged in the Civic Stakes (Listed, 1400m). Baker has spent the week at Royal Ascot overseeing Overpass’s campaign, with the Group 1-winning gelding producing a brave third in Tuesday’s King Charles III Stakes (Gr 1, 5f). Back home, racing manager Luke Hilton will oversee stable representatives Hollywood Hero (Sacred Falls), Midnight Dynamite (Pierata), Amor Victorious (Caravaggio) and Point And Shoot (Blue Point), all of whom are being targeted towards Sydney winter features. "Hollywood Hero was really good the other day [when third over 1300 metres at Randwick]. He may need further again, but he was outstanding," Hilton said. "Midnight Dynamite [second] was really good too. Amor Victorious is coming back off a short let-up. He had a small setback [after the Scone Cup] so had a break, but he's good now. If we can avoid really wet ground it will suit him. With Point And Shoot, it depends which version of him turns up." Hilton said the quartet would continue through the winter carnival, with the Winter Stakes (Listed, 1400m) and Winter Challenge (Listed, 1500m) among their likely targets. "We're going to roll through with all four of them,” he said. “Unfortunately, they've probably all got to keep taking each other on, but it's a good problem to have.” Midnight Dynamite heads Civic Stakes betting, opening favourite at $3.60, while Hollywood Hero requires three withdrawals to gain a start.

Ryan banking on versatile General Salute in Civic Stakes

Trainer Gerald Ryan is hopeful General Salute (Russian Revolution) can convert his consistency into a deserved victory when he lines up in Saturday’s Civic Stakes at Randwick. The five-year-old resumed with a fast-finishing second to Wanaruah (Snitzel) in the Bob Charley AO Stakes (Listed, 1100m) earlier this month, his first start since October, and Ryan believes the performance has set him up perfectly for the step to 1400 metres. "I thought he went terrific over an unsuitable journey, if he gets clear running at the top of the straight he goes close to winning the race," Ryan told Racing NSW. With Tim Clark to ride, Ryan said General Salute’s versatility would be a key asset despite drawing wide. "He can race handy or back in the field, I’d like to see it playing a bit fair." General Salute has not won since claiming Rosehill’s Star Kingdom Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) in April last year, but has continued to race competitively in strong company. "He's a very honest horse, people could say he's a non-winner then you look at the horses that beat him," Ryan said. The trainer indicated the gelding would likely have one more winter run, either in the Winter Stakes or Glasshouse Handicap (Listed, 1400m), before a spring campaign. Ryan will also saddle Green Shadows (Menari) in the TAB Handicap (1400m) and in-form three-year-old Cheeky Smirk (All Too Hard), who chases a hat-trick in the Kia Ora Bloodlines To Headlines Handicap (1300m).

Sargent seeks reward with Perfect Justice

Trainer John Sargent believes Perfect Justice (Justify) is ready to return to the winner's stall and expects the gelding to be a major player in Saturday's Midway Handicap (1600m) at Randwick. The four-year-old half brother to Sapphire Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) winner Infancy (Wandjina) has filled a placing in five of his seven Midway appearances and comes into the race following a fast-finishing second to Is It Spectacular (Dundeel) over 1500 metres earlier this month. Sargent said poor luck at the start had cost Perfect Justice in both runs this preparation. "He just jumped in the air last start and missed the jump, that cost him the race probably," Sargent told Racing NSW. "First-up he had to go back from a bad draw and had too much to do. Last start the leader shot away, we were getting there but far too late." Drawn to settle closer on Saturday, Sargent expects the gelding to take improvement from his recent efforts. "I'd expect from a nice draw he will be closer, it looks a nice race for him to get a bit of confidence and move on from there up to 2000 metres." Apprentice Siena Grima retains the ride and her 2-kilogram claim, a factor Sargent believes will again prove valuable. "We go in at a good weight, Siena knows him well too. It's good to still get a couple of kilos with her," he said. The trainer indicated Perfect Justice would likely step up in distance after Saturday as he works through the grades.

Silver Wedding chasing black type in Gai Waterhouse Classic

Ciaron Maher-trained mare Silver Wedding (Zoustar) will look to continue her upward trajectory when she tackles the Gai Waterhouse Classic (Listed, 1200m) at Ipswich on Saturday. The four-year-old has won four of her 13 starts and resumed in impressive fashion when scoring over 1000 metres at Eagle Farm on May 30, earning a shot at black-type company. A full-sister to William Reid Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) winning stallion Schwarz, Silver Wedding races in the colours of prominent owners Brendan and Jo Lindsay and has continued to improve with racing and travel, having campaigned successfully in both Queensland and New Zealand. "She’s got a huge pedigree being a sister to Schwarz," Maher said. "And Brendan and Jo have been good supporters of the stable." Silver Wedding has won three races in Brisbane and earlier this year contested the Aotearoa Classic (Gr 3, 1600m) at Ellerslie, a performance Maher believes highlighted her continued development. "She's a horse that’s always shown ability," he said. "Each prep she improves. When she was up in Brisbane last time she improved and when she went to New Zealand, I thought that was a huge run with the ground she covered." Maher was particularly encouraged by her first-up victory, despite the distance appearing short of her best. "The 1000 [metres], it didn't surprise me, but I thought it might be too short for her, but she was very dominant and the step up to 1200 metres [on Saturday] will suit,” he said. "Ipswich can be a bit tricky, but I think she’ll show her class." Silver Wedding has drawn barrier ten in the capacity field, which includes five emergencies.

Widdup eyes Gosford breakthrough with Internal Affairs

Trainer Brad Widdup is optimistic that talented juvenile Internal Affairs (Home Affairs) can make a winning return when he resumes in Thursday's 1100-metre maiden at Gosford. The colt made an encouraging start to his career last preparation, finishing fourth on debut behind subsequent Champagne Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) winner Fireball (Snitzel) before running second in the Inglis Nursery (Listed, 1000m) behind Where's The Circus (Trapeze Artist). Widdup said the colt had returned well following a break and was ready to make his seasonal reappearance under Kerrin McEvoy. "Internal Affairs is a lovely colt that showed us plenty in his only two race starts," Widdup told Racing NSW. "He led them up on debut and was beaten less than two lengths by Fireball. He went on to win a Group 1 in the autumn and has won more than $2 million. His second start in the Nursery was good as well and he had a nice break after that." The Hawkesbury trainer said Internal Affairs had trialled twice in preparation for his return and expected him to handle the testing conditions despite the heavy track. "The heavy track first-up isn't ideal but all indications are he'll handle it," he said.

Retirement nears for New York Lustre

New York Lustre (Credit: Racing Photos)

Trainer Enver Jusufovic has mapped out the final stages of New York Lustre’s (Manhattan Rain) racing career, with the mare set to retire to the breeding barn after a trio of winter targets. The six-year-old is scheduled to resume in Saturday’s Brian Beattie Handicap (1100m) at Flemington before tackling the Sir John Monash Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m) and Bletchingly Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) at Caulfield next month. A six-time winner from 16 starts, New York Lustre boasts an unbeaten record down Flemington’s straight course, highlighted by her victory in last spring’s Begonia Belle Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m). The mare has not raced since finishing fourth, beaten less than a length, in the Goodwood (Gr 1, 1200m) at Morphettville in May. “She was probably in the wrong part of the track on the inside last time," Jusufovic said. "Group 1 races, you need everything to go your way to win, and in the end, she was only three-quarters-of-a-length off the winner [Desert Lightning]." Jusufovic said New York Lustre would be retired following her winter campaign and is already booked to visit first-season sire Tentyris (Street Boss), winner of this year's Black Caviar Lightning (Gr 1, 1000m) and Newmarket Handicap (Gr 1, 1200m). "After Saturday she'll go to the Sir John Monash and the Bletchingly and then she'll go off to stud as she's already booked to go to Tentyris," he said. Despite her impending retirement, Jusufovic believes the mare remains at the peak of her powers. "I think she's still improving actually, and it will be sad to see her retired," he said. "Hopefully, in time, we'll see some of the offspring come through my stable."

Demerzel breaks through in style at Canterbury

Promising Ole Kirk (Written Tycoon) filly Demerzel improved on her debut performance with an impressive maiden victory over 1250 metres at Canterbury on Wednesday. Fourth behind the highly regarded Helldeeva (Hellbent) at Warwick Farm on debut, the Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained two-year-old made full use of her gate speed under Tim Clark, leading throughout before drawing clear in the straight to score by 1.8 lengths over Home Affairs (I Am Invincible) filly Consulate. "Very professional performance," stated Bott. "She won that at the start, she began so brilliantly, and it was an easy watch from there." Bott indicated the filly's future may lie over further distances. "I think the improvement is really going to come when we can see her over a bit further, I think 1400 and 1600 meters as a three-year-old really going to see her be very effective." Clark was equally bullish on the filly's prospects. "Definitely," said Clark. "I was quite taken by her the other day. I always sort of felt that getting up to seven or a mile, she's going to be better suited." Purchased for $550,000 from the Evergreen Stud Farm draft at Inglis Easter last year by Waterhouse, Bott and Kestrel Thoroughbreds, Demerzel is the second winner from three runners out of Apicius (Redoute's Choice), who first foal is 2024 Anzac Day Stakes (Listed, 1400m) winner Epimeles (Dundeel). Vinery Stud's Ole Kirk, who had three winners on the day with three-year-olds Prestige Forever and Gatwick also scoring, will stand the upcoming season at $110,000 (inc. GST).

Rae sets lofty spring targets for Loft Vega

Loft Vega (Credit: Racing Photos)

Trainer Alex Rae believes promising filly Loft Vega (Lope De Vega) has the ability to develop into a stakes performer after she recorded her second win from three starts at Caulfield Heath on Wednesday. The three-year-old justified favouritism in a Benchmark 70 contest over 1500 metres, settling just behind the speed before quickening clear under Lachlan Neindorf to score by a half-length. Rae revealed the well-bred filly had overcome significant barrier issues earlier in her career and paid tribute to the team at Denistoun Park for helping her reach the track. "First and foremost, special credit to Denistoun Park – we were in a spot of bother six months ago with this filly and the team there has done a remarkable job," Rae told Racing.com. "She was very naughty at the gates – we couldn't even get her in – she was scratched on a couple of occasions at the races, so credit to them." Rae said the daughter of Lope De Vega (Shamardal) would now head for a spell before being aimed at spring targets. "She's very talented. It's probably a big call for this time of year, but we think she can potentially get to stakes grade in time over a bit further," he said. "That will do her for this campaign, we'll put her on ice and bring her back for the back-end of the spring." Purchased by Lofty Thoroughbred Group for $310,000 from the Cressfield draft at the 2024 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, Loft Vega is a half-sister to Wednesday’s MM Digital Sale topper Wexford Miss and stakes winners Waterford (Awtaad) and Wicklow.

First city success for Hollowood at Caulfield Heath

Apprentice Caitlin Hollowood celebrated a career milestone at Caulfield Heath on Wednesday when Prestige Forever (Ole Kirk) provided her with a maiden metropolitan success in the Sportsbet Feed Handicap (1500m). After riding 33 winners across Victoria and New South Wales, Hollowood broke through at city level at her first ride for Cranbourne trainer Julius Sandhu, steering the four-year-old to a determined victory. "It's unreal," Hollowood said. "For a second, I thought we were beaten, but he really fought back and really dug in deep. I'm so happy to get the win, especially for Julius too. It was my first ride for him, so we're starting off in a good way." Sent out at $12, Prestige Forever jumped from the outside gate and was ridden positively, holding off the late challenges of Tom Dabernig-trained pair Dantooine (Rebel Dane) and Corro (Blue Point) to score by 0.2 lengths. Sandhu credited Hollowood's front-running ride and hoped the victory could mark a turning point for the talented gelding, who won the St Albans Stakes (Listed, 1200m) as a juvenile when trained by David Brideoake and Matt Jenkins. "We asked a lot of her as this guy had been taking the 'mickey' back home," Sandhu said. "We know he's talented, but he has a bit of a good old think, so we just had to go and do something different. We drew the outside barrier, and I said to give him a good squeeze and get him to the front. I said to be aggressive, and she was, and she rated him well in front."

Entries open for expanded Off The Track Carnival

Entries have officially opened for the 2026 Racing Victoria Off The Track Carnival, with the three-day celebration of retired racehorses set to return to Boneo Park from September 11-13. Following a successful inaugural running, this year's event has expanded to three days and is expected to attract up to 500 thoroughbreds, making it Victoria's largest equestrian event dedicated exclusively to OTT horses. Over $260,000 in prize money will be offered across 23 championship classes, with Racing Victoria's (RV) continued support ensuring the Carnival remains the richest thoroughbred-only equestrian competition in the state. New for 2026 are six Rising Star classes, designed for horses that have raced or trialled within two years of the event. The initiative was introduced following competitor feedback and aims to encourage the retraining and uptake of recently retired racehorses. Boneo Park chief executive Greta Cooper said the event would be significantly enhanced this year. Open to eligible thoroughbreds from across Australia, the Carnival features competition in dressage, combined training, show horse and showjumping disciplines. Entries close August 1, with organisers encouraging competitors to act quickly after last year's event filled well before the deadline. Entry fees remain capped at $100 per horse per class and no membership is required.

Coffs Harbour transferred to Inverell

Friday’s Coffs Harbour meeting has been transferred to Inverell after officials inspected the track and found its surface unsuitable for racing, with the area receiving approximately 65mls of rainfall over the last seven days. Alternative tracks within the Northern Rivers region were considered and inspected, however, were also deemed currently unsuitable for racing. Inverell is currently rated a Soft 6.

Tzaferis swaps newsroom for clubland with Murray Bridge appointment

Respected racing journalist James Tzaferis has been appointed General Manager of the Murray Bridge Racing Club, bringing an end to his time with racing media outlet Betsy. Tzaferis, a former Racing.com broadcaster and one of the industry's most respected journalists, officially commenced in the role this week. During his time with Betsy, Tzaferis played a leading role in covering several major racing stories, most notably the ongoing Formestane controversy in Victoria. His reporting helped bring attention to the debate surrounding whether a number of trainers charged under the prohibited substance rules may have been innocent of deliberate wrongdoing, prompting Racing Victoria to undertake further research into the matter. Betsy founder Paul Tatnell paid tribute to Tzaferis' contribution. "James is the ultimate professional who loves racing, respected in the industry and knows a great story," Tatnell said. "We're stoked for JT that he has this opportunity, but obviously it comes with a tinge of sadness that we won't have him anymore for Betsy. "He has done important work for us, and given how talented he is in front of and behind the camera, we hope his involvement in racing media isn't done yet. "Matt Welsh and I wish him the best for not only his new role, but more importantly, as he and Jess become parents." A long-time local racing participant and industry figure, Tzaferis said he is excited by the opportunity to help shape the club's future. "This is a bit of a change of pace for me but I'm excited to step into club-land as General Manager of the Murray Bridge Racing Club," he said. "I'm a local that is passionate about racing, especially in this community, so I am very excited to be a part of writing the Club's next chapter. "I've loved my time in racing media, particularly at Betsy, where I was afforded a level of freedom and editorial independence." The appointment marks a significant move from racing media into club administration, with Tzaferis bringing extensive industry knowledge and strong relationships throughout Australian racing to the role.

Didham enjoying standout debut season

Training newcomer Trent Didham has already exceeded expectations in his first season in partnership with father Peter and is hopeful the stable can continue its momentum through the closing weeks of the term. Operating from Awapuni, the Didhams have prepared 20 winners this season, highlighted by black-type victories with Omega Boy (Time Test) in the Japan Trophy (Gr 2, 1600m) and War Princess (War Decree) in the Eulogy Stakes (Gr 3, 1600m). "We thought anywhere around 15 or 18 winners would be a good target, we've only got 22 horses in work at the moment with some nice quality stock coming through," Didham said. "We wanted to get a few stakes placings and we've had two winners, so we've ticked that box as well." The stable will have runners at three meetings this week, headed by in-form filly Shameless Star (Shamexpress) in Saturday's Winter Series 3YO Final (1600m) at Ellerslie. Winner of her past two starts at Otaki and Wanganui, the three-year-old will tackle the mile for the first time. "She came through her last run well and it's a big ask with a trip away and stepping up to a mile for the first time, but she's only three once so we'll have a crack," Didham said. Stablemate Can Do (Contributer) will contest the Progressive Final (1600m), while unpredictable stayer Danjuro (Saxon Warrior) heads to Friday's Pahiatua Cup (2100m). At Sunday's Awapuni synthetic meeting, Didham identified Victortheinflictor (Vespa) as the stable's leading chance following an encouraging first-up third on the all-weather surface. "He's working really well and his first-up run the other day on the poly was really encouraging," he said.

UK: Venetian Sun to face 21 rivals in Commonwealth Cup

Last year's Albany Stakes (Gr 3, 6f) winner Venetian Sun (Starman) will take on 21 rivals in Friday's Commonwealth Cup (Gr 1, 6f) as she bids to land back-to-back victories at Royal Ascot. The Karl Burke-trained filly was an impressive winner of last month's Sandy Lane Stakes (Gr 2, 6f) on her return at Haydock, and is currently unbeaten in four starts over Friday's six-furlong trip. Venetian Sun's main market rivals include the Aidan O'Brien-trained Albert Einstein (Wootton Bassett), who was a last-start second in the Carnarvon Stakes (Listed, 6f) at Newbury on his first run at the trip since landing the Marble Hill Stakes (Gr 3, 6f) in May, 2025. O'Brien also runs Charles Darwin (No Nay Never) and Brussels (Wootton Bassett), while Commonwealth Cup Trial Stakes (Gr 3, 6f) winner Coppull (Bated Breath), Havana Anna (Havana Grey) and Division (Kingman) are also leading contenders.

UK: Star O’Brien fillies to have third-straight class in Coronation

The Aidan O'Brien-trained pair Precise (Starspangledbanner) and True Love (No Nay Never) will have their third-straight match-up on Friday after being declared as two of nine conformations for the Coronation Stakes (Gr 1, 1m) at Royal Ascot. The current score between the pair is one each, with True Love landing the English 1,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1m) at Newmarket and Precise taking out the Irish 1,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1m) three weeks later. Ryan Moore rides Precise, with Wayne Lordan on True Love. Last year's Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf (Gr 1, 8f) winner Balantina (Ten Sovereigns) heads up the opposition to the Ballydoyle duo.

UK: QIPCO extends British Champions Day sponsorship to 2028

Qatar Holdings and Investment Company (QIPCO) has extended its sponsorship of Britain’s richest raceday, British Champions Day, staged annually at Ascot in October, until 2028. QIPCO has sponsored the race meeting since its inaugural running in 2011, helping to grow the fixture into one of the most prestigious days racing in the world and the only single day of racing in Britain to stage five Group 1 races. Last year’s meeting saw the 2025 Longines World’s Best Racehorse, Calandagan (Gleneagles), claim victory in the joint World’s Best Horse Race of 2025, the QIPCO Champion Stakes (Gr 1, 1m 2f). In 2025, QIPCO British Champions Day staged seven races for the first time, including the inaugural running of the £250,000 QIPCO British Champions Two-Year-Old Conditions Stakes (6f), won by Tuesday's King Charles III Stakes (Gr 1, 6f) hero Mission Central (No Nay Never). Nick Smith, co-chair of British Champions Series Ltd, which owns British Champions Day, and director of racing and public affairs at Ascot Racecourse, said: “We are thrilled that QIPCO has chosen to renew its sponsorship of Britain’s richest raceday. As an industry-owned raceday, on behalf of all shareholders, we wish to extend our thanks to QIPCO for their generosity and continued support. Last year’s renewal epitomised exactly why the day was created, an end of season celebration with world class action and crowds of over 30,000 with many young people in attendance. We look forward to continuing to work with QIPCO over the next two years, particularly to continue to grow Club 26, the young person’s racing club for 18-26-year-olds, to engage future generations in the sport.”

ANZ News

That old sage Rick Jamieson has been at it again, with the boss of the Gilgai Farm production house creating another intriguing smash hit pedigree that’s brought yet another Group 1 winner.

From the maker of Black Caviar (Bel Esprit), All Too Hard (Casino Prince), Ole Kirk (Written Tycoon) and more, comes the feelgood colt of the winter – Tron Bolt (Toronado) – winner of Saturday’s JJ Atkins (Gr 1, 1600m) at Eagle Farm.

Jamieson prefers to divine his pedigrees in private these days, politely declining requests for interviews to explain the magic, and to be left alone in his dream-weaving studio.

But some tell-tale traces of his work are evident in the bloodlines of Tron Bolt, who’s living up to his price tag for Chris Waller and Hermitage, having been bought by the latter for $900,000 at Inglis’s Ready2Race sale last October, after initially fetching Gilgai $250,000 at Inglis Easter.

More on said traces later.

The headline for Tron Bolt’s lineage is that he continues the run of phenomenal success for his second dam Meerlust (Johannesburg).

And for fans of Johannesburg (Hennessy), this is the second time in three weeks in Brisbane that he’s shown his worth through his daughters, with Kingsford Smith Cup (Gr 1, 1300m) hero Headley Grange (Exosphere) also having a second dam by the son of Hennessy (Storm Cat).

Incidentally, Johannesburg as a broodmare sire runs at 4.7 per cent stakes winners to runners, and 8.5 per cent stakes horses to runners. That’s comparable to Fastnet Rock (Danehill), who’s about to win his third straight Australian broodmare sire title and bats at 5.8 per cent and 10.9 per cent in those categories.

Meerlust had a modest track record, though restricted to only five starts, with her only win coming on debut at Grafton in 2011. But the Emirates Park-bred mare – bought as a yearling by old mates and boutique breeders Matthew Irwin and Peter Harris for just $22,000 at the Inglis Scone sale of 2009 – became pure box office post-racing.

She had just seven named foals – the first six being fillies – from 15 covers, and three were stakes winners for Irwin and Harris.

Duais (Shamus Award) won thrice at the top level, in the Australian Cup (Gr 1, 2000m), the Tancred Stakes (Gr 1, 2400m) and the Queensland Oaks (Gr 1, 2200m).

Philia (All Too Hard), four years Duais’s junior, won a Group 2 and a Listed in Brisbane last winter.

And before both of those mares came Baccarat Baby (Casino Prince). She won a Group 3 and a Listed at the Sunshine Coast, but has now eclipsed those feats as a mum, since she’s the dam of the Group 1-winning juvenile Tron Bolt.

Meerlust left us last September aged 18, found dead in her paddock of a suspected heart attack, but earned the honour of being named HTBA Broodmare of the Year in 2022. That was the same year that Irwin won the Thoroughbred Breeders NSW Breeder of the Year award, thanks to Duais and Baccarat Baby – and well before Philia was on the scene – despite having less than five broodmares.

The Irwin-Harris partnership bred Meerlust’s last foal, a colt by Hellbent (I Am Invincible), who was born in 2024. He’s in work with Brad Widdup, who also trains for them Meerlust’s previous foal Waerea (Bivouac), a three-year-old gelding who’s had a Kembla Grange win and three placings from five starts.

Irwin and Harris had more cause to thank their lucky stars for Meerlust only last month, when Philia became the fourth-top lot at the Inglis Chairman’s sale, bought by Northern Farm’s Katsumi Yoshida for $1.4 million.

That took the returns for Irwin and Harris – in prize money and sales proceeds – from their $22,000 purchase of Meerlust to around $7.5 million.

And that’s only the publicly declared stuff.

They also sold $4 million earner Duais privately as a triple Group 1 winner to free-spending Yulong, so their haul thanks to Meerlust can be assumed to have hit eight figures.

No wonder she has a special place in their hearts.

Back in 2021, Irwin and Harris also cashed in on Baccarat Baby four months after her last race, selling her at the 2021 Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale for $650,000 to Spendthrift Farm.

It was a decent price, swollen by her half-sister Duais having won the Adrian Knox Stakes (Gr 3, 2000m) and placed second in the ATC Oaks (Gr 1, 2400m) one month earlier. But it was close to having been considerably more, since 11 days after the sale, Duais became an elite winner in the Queensland Oaks.

After Spendthrift Australia closed down less than a year later, Baccarat Baby changed hands again, bought at the American operation’s dispersal sale for $900,000 by Dermot Farrington Bloodstock.

She was soon in the Gilgai brood, and after slipping on her first cover from Dirty Work (Written Tycoon), Jamieson put her to Toronado (High Chaparral), and the result was Tron Bolt.

On Saturday, he became the seventh Group 1 winner among 52 stakes victors for Toronado, who’ll stand at Swettenham Stud again this year for an unchanged $88,000 (inc GST).

Five of the 16-year-old’s elite winners have been bred in Australia, where he has had 30 stakes winners at a solid 4.7 per cent of runners.

The Toronado-Casino Prince cross which produced Tron Bolt is running well from limited exposure, with two stakes winners from eight starters, making it comfortably Toronado’s best nick of more than six runners. Its other black type winner is Tasmania’s Still A Star, who won seven stakes races – five in her home state, but also the VRC Rose Of Kingston Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m).

In Tron Bolt’s pedigree, the main eye-catcher is the Canadian wonder mare and blue hen Fanfreluche (Northern Dancer). She comes in strongly as the colt’s fifth dam, and Baccarat Baby is inbred to her at 5f x 4f, since she’s also the third dam of Casino Prince’s sire Flying Spur (Danehill).

Fanfreluche – who for the record was Canada’s Horse of the Year and Champion 3YO Filly of 1970, its Broodmare of the Year in 1978 and a designated Reine-de-Course mare – of course crops up in many quality pedigrees.

And her presence in this one puts Tron Bolt firmly on the right path for a future stud career.

There’s a young stallion making waves at present who also has Fanfreluche as his fifth dam – Coolmore’s champion first-season sire in-waiting Home Affairs (I Am Invincible) – who also starred in the Waller stable.

Another champion debutant sire, 2022’s Russian Revolution (Snitzel), has Fanfreluche as his fourth dam, as does dual champion sire Encosta De Lago (Fairy King). Flying Spur, champion sire the year before Encosta’s back-to-back titles, is also in the club, as we’ve seen, with Fanfreluche his third dam.

As for the blends at play in Tron Bolt’s pedigree, there are only two bits of inbreeding.

Toronado (Credit: Swettenham Stud)

Mr. Prospector (Raise A Native) lends a hand in strong places at 5m x 5f, 6f. He’s the third sire of Toronado’s dam, the damsire of Flying Spur, and the second damsire of Johannesburg. Plus the ever-present Danzig (Northern Dancer) is at 5m x 5m, as the grandsire of Toronado’s second dam, and as Baccarat Baby’s fourth sire.

But elsewhere, Jamieson has designed a mating that would have warmed the heart of Leon Rasmussen, with his penchant for repeating superior females.

One old Jamieson favourite – Sex Appeal (Buckpasser) – is at 6m x 6m via her two most famous full-brother sons El Gran Senor and Try My Best (both by Northern Dancer). The former feeds into Toronado’s damsire, the latter into Casino Prince’s.

Foaled in 1970, Sex Appeal is also doubled in the sixth remove in another Jamieson-bred Group 1 winner by Toronado: Masked Crusader. In this column’s examination of that sprinter a few years back, the Gilgai boss was also enthused by his tripling of Sex Appeal’s sire Buckpasser. Tron Bolt has even more of him, with Buckpasser at 7f, 6f x 7f, 7f, through three different daughters.

Aside from the ubiquitous Natalma (Native Dancer), whose nine appearances in a three-six split should never be underestimated, there are three other heavily influential Reine-de-Course mares repeated in Tron Bolt that catch the eye – all of them born in the USA in 1952.

Lalun (Djeddah) is at 6m, 8m x 8m through her two most famous sons. Bold Reason (Hail To Reason) takes the strong first spot as the damsire of Sadler’s Wells (Northern Dancer), who’s Toronado’s second sire, while Lalun’s other two appearances come through Never Bend (Nasrullah).

Flower Bowl (Alibhai) is at 8m x 7m via her two star sons by Ribot (Tenerani) in Graustark and His Majesty, the latter of whom has a feted position in Baccarat Baby’s sireline, as the damsire of her third sire Danehill.

And Somethingroyal (Princequillo) is at 7m, 9m x 8m, 8m, 7m via her two best known sons – Secretariat (Bold Ruler) three times, and Sir Gaylord (Turn-To).

Nearco (Pharos) is by far the most common sire in the pedigree with 22 appearances, accounting for 7.6 per cent of the blood, although the great Northern Dancer (Nearctic) has a bigger say with nine spots for 15.8 per cent – the highest ratio of any horse in the pedigree. Plus his first position is relatively recent for him, as Tron Bolt’s fourth sire.

Meanwhile, Gilgai also bred Tron Bolt’s yearling full brother in 2024, but Baccarat Baby then slipped after a third cover from Toronado, and missed to Castelvecchio (Dundeel) last spring.

Seeing this family unfold has been a wonder for Irwin, and a highly lucrative one at that, including this latest success with Tron Bolt, which came as a salve to the recent loss of Meerlust, which he calls “a very sad day” for his and Harris’s families.

Just what someone was doing in 2009, selling them a filly with Fanfreluche as a third dam for $22,000, remains anybody’s guess.

“We’re just thrilled to see Meerlust, the horse that keeps giving, being behind more success,” Irwin tells It’s In The Blood. “She could end up proving to be one of these blue hen mares, like Fanfreluche.

“We and the Harris family are very proud to see Baccarat’s first foal doing so well, and we’re excited to see all the progeny coming through.”
