Exciting unraced prospects win Rosehill trials
A pair of exciting unraced prospects won their prospective trials at Rosehill on Thursday morning.
Heat four was taken out by the Peter Snowden-trained Short Sea, a colt by Ole Kirk (Written Tycoon), who showed maturity beyond his years to beat his elders in a 1030-metre trial. Ridden by Sam Clipperton, the colt crossed the line 0.4 lengths ahead of Ourgan (Yes Yes Yes), while Quadria (American Pharoah) finished a further length away in third.
A $170,000 pickup for his trainer from the North Bloodstock draft at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale last year, the youngster is out of dual-winning mare Steamboat Sally (Snitzel), herself a three-quarter sister to Gunnison (Not A Single Doubt), with the pair out of Group 2 scorer Colorado Claire (Hussonet).
The John O’Shea and Tom Charlton camp look to have a smart filly on their hands in the shape of Coco Affair, an unraced daughter of Coolmore’s first-season sire Home Affairs (I Am Invincible) who landed her second trial win over 900 metres.
The filly defeated Chris Waller’s $500,000 Magic Millions graduate Campione D’Italia (Snitzel) by 0.1 lengths, while his stablemate, Siumai Knight (Toronado), was another 5.2 lengths away in third.
Coco Affair was bought by her trainer and James Bester for $260,000 from the Mill Park Stud draft at last year’s Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale. She is out of three-time winner Cocoa Doll (More Than Ready), a half-sister to stakes winner Modern Wonder (Snitzel) and Group 2 winner Away Game (Snitzel), who landed the 2020 Magic Millions 2YO Classic (RL, 1200m).
Mill Park Stud will offer the filly’s Zoustar (Northern Meteor) half-brother as Lot 562 at the Inglis Premier Sale, which gets under way in Melbourne on March 1.
Meanwhile, the Brad Widdup-trained Tenenbaum (Snitzel) who finished sixth in the Max Lees Classic (900m) on his debut in November, also landed his trial on Thursday morning, beating Attorney General (Snitzel) by 0.8 lengths.
Tenenbaum is a brother to Hong Kong Derby (2000m) winner Cap Ferret, and another full-brother will be offered by Arrowfield at March’s Inglis Easter Yearling Sale. He is catalogued as Lot 241.
The final juvenile heat of the morning was taken out by the Terry Croft-trained Kirkham Plate (1000m) winner Thrill Hunter (Ole Kirk), who finished tenth in the Golden Gift (1100m). The filly, who was a $280,000 at the Easter sale, looked impressive when beating Lorax (Zoustar) by 0.8 lengths.
