Frankel filly headlines Great Southern sale catalogue

Burnewang North Pastoral-consigned daughter of Europe’s champion sire set to play a starring role at Inglis auction

A filly by champion European sire Frankel (Galileo) is set to be the headline act at the Great Southern Sale, the catalogue for which was released by Inglis yesterday.

The filly, who is from a deep Aga Khan family that includes Prix du Jockey Club (French Derby) (Gr 1, 2100m) winner Vadeni (Churchill), forms part of Burnewang North’s annual draft of weanlings which features a colt by fellow Juddmonte sire Kingman (Invincible Spirit), a pair of fillies by Written Tycoon (Iglesia) and a colt by Dundeel (High Chaparral), the sire of Saturday’s South Australian Derby (Gr 1, 2500m) winner Dunkel.

Inglis has released a select catalogue of weanlings numbering 375, with three further general weanlings, and a group of 42 broodmare and race filly prospects for its sale which will be conducted on June 8 and 9 at Oaklands Junction.

“I think [the sale] will be met with great anticipation,” said Inglis’s Victorian bloodstock manager James Price. “It is an outstanding group, headed by what I believe to be arguably the best weanling filly to be offered anywhere in the southern hemisphere this year.

“I’m looking forward to seeing her when I go to Burnewang on Tuesday. I hear she’s a bit of a star, so the catalogue has really come together. We’ve got solid numbers, as we did last year, and I can’t wait for the sale next month.”

Burnewang North will offer a draft of 14 weanlings, with the Frankel filly and Kingman colt both being first foals out of mares purchased privately from Juddmonte, with the help of agents Paul Moroney and Catheryne Bruggeman.

Stud principal Cathy Hains told ANZ Bloodstock News she believes the Frankel filly can live up to her early star billing.

“She is certainly a lovely filly from our perspective, and the group at Inglis that have seen her liked her too,” she said.

“We’re looking forward to taking her to the sale and we hope she’ll be a star of the show.”

The Burnewang North-offered filly is one of two by the Juddmonte sire to be offered at Oaklands Junction.

Esker Lodge will also present a filly by the stallion on day two, who is out of the Dubawi (Dubai Millennium) mare Murasaki, herself a daughter of Royal Ascot Group 2 winner Michita (Dynaformer), a half-sister to Dubai World Cup (Gr 1, 2000m) placegetter Cat O’Mountain (Street Cry) among four further stakes-performed horses.

Elsewhere in the catalogue are weanlings by leading Victorian-based sires Toronado (High Chaparral), Shamus Award (Snitzel) and Written Tycoon, as well as high-profile Hunter Valley stallions Russian Revolution (Snitzel), Capitalist (Written Tycoon), So You Think (High Chaparral) and Zoustar (Northern Meteor).

Among the first-crop sires with representation at the sale are Hanseatic (Street Boss) (19 lots) Dirty Work (Written Tycoon) (13), Doubtland (Not A Single Doubt) (12), Tagaloa (Lord Kanaloa) (11), Fierce Impact (Deep Impact) (ten), Royal Meeting (Invincible Spirit) (nine), Lucky Vega (Lope De Vega) (eight), Peltzer (So You Think) (eight), Russian Camelot (Camelot) (six), King’s Legacy (Redoute’s Choice) (four), Earthlight (Exceed And Excel) (three) and Farnan (Not A Single Doubt) (three).

Recent graduates of the sale include four-time Group 1 winner Montefilia (Kermadec), a $62,500 buy who more than doubled her value as a yearling and sold for $3.4 million at the Inglis Chairman’s Sale earlier this month, three-time Group 1 winner Behemoth (All Too Hard), VRC Derby (Gr 1, 2500m) hero Extra Brut (Domesday) and New Zealand elite-level winner On The Bubbles (Brazen Beau).

“The Great Southern Sale has proven itself time and again as a source of top-level racehorses; the likes of Montefilia, Behemoth, Sopressa, Extra Brut, Douceur, Gytrash, On The Bubbles and Lunar Fox,’’ Price said.

“It’s also a fabulous hunting ground for pinhookers. Out of the 2022 sale alone, came some outstanding pinhook results like $40,000 into $350,000, $6,000 into $90,000, $26,000 into $200,000, $100,000 into $325,000 and $160,000 into $330,000.”

Catalogued within the breeding stock section are high-class, off-the-track performers including the stakes-placed Queen Adele (Adelaide) and Group 3 runner-up Veranskova (Written Tycoon), as well as mares in foal to stallions such as Harry Angel (Dark Angel), So You Think, Hellbent (I Am Invincible), Toronado, Tiger Of Malay (Extreme Choice), Russian Revolution and Magnus (Flying Spur).

“The breeding stock market has begun strongly in Sydney with our Australian Weanling Sale and Australian Broodmare Sale and I have no doubt buyers will find plenty of appealing opportunities in the Great Southern catalogue,” Price said.
