‘It’s a very strong line up of horses’ – Magic Millions reveal ‘exciting’ catalogue for National Weanling Sale

Magic Millions have released the catalogue for this year’s National Weanling Sale, which will take place on Sunday, May 25 on the Gold Coast.

A line up of 365 weanlings (plus supplementaries) will be offered during the one-day session, including a half-brother to Hong Kong champion Golden Sixty (Medaglia D’Oro) by Home Affairs (I Am Invincible) and The Autumn Sun (Redoute’s Choice) half-sister to Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) hero Knight’s Choice (Extreme Choice).

They will be joined by relations to fellow Group 1 winners Chain Of Lightning (Fighting Sun), Royal Merchant (Merchant Navy), Shadow Hero (Pierro), The Mission (Choisir) and Vibrant Sun (The Autumn Sun).

The sale this season has already produced six individual two-year-old stakes winners as well as recent stakes winners Autumn Glow (The Autumn Sun), Stay Focused (Cosmic Force) and Wonder Boy (Cosmic Force).

“I think this is a sale that each and every year – this is the sale Pierro was sold at, Zoustar, Stay Inside, and then the graduates in the last racing season – it’s just continued to reel out outstanding performers,” Magic Millions managing director Barry Bowditch told ANZ Bloodstock News.

“I think it’s not just about people coming to the sale to pinhook. Yes, they come with confidence because it’s a sale they do really really well at by pinhooking each year, but I think it’s a sale now that you need to pay attention to, whether you’re a trainer or an owner looking to race the best stock you possibly can – I think this is a weanling sale that needs to be taken notice of considering the stock that comes out of it every year.

“When you look at the catalogue we’ve put together this year, it’s a very strong line up of horses.”

The catalogue features progeny by over 100 individual sires, from proven champions to exciting young stallions, including 15 first-season sires.

“It’s a sale where I think all budgets are taken care of and I think we’ve got a lot of quality and depth in our catalogue,” Bowditch said.

“It’s an exciting sale – this is the first sale to see the first-season sires, obviously we’re really looking forward to seeing the first of the Anamoes, we’re excited by him.

“Then you’ve got the likes of Artorious and Best Of Bordeaux, Hitosu and In The Congo, Jacquinot just to name a few, so there’s a really strong line up of first-season horses as well as the proven horses.

“This is the only sale in this part of the world at the moment that’s got a Wootton Bassett in it – we’ve got four of them – some Extreme Choices, Snitzels, I Am Invincibles. Then you look at the first-season sires this year, Home Affairs, Stay Inside, Farnan, Ole Kirk, they’re very well represented so all-in-all it’s an exciting catalogue that the vendors have allowed us to put together on their behalf.”

The National Weanling Sale marks the beginning of the 2025 National Sale on the Gold Coast, with the National Broodmare Sale taking place from May 27-28 and the National Yearling Sale set to follow on June 2-3.

“We’ll release our National Broodmare Sale and our Yearling Sale catalogue in the coming days and we’re excited,” Bowditch said.

“It’s a fantastic fortnight, from the inspections to the sale on the Gold Coast. The quality of racing in the winter carnival is great – we’ve got a million dollar race on the Gold Coast under the lights just before our Weanling Sale and we’ve got an outstanding bunch of weanlings, race fillies, broodmares and yearlings to go on offer. It’s a one-stop shop and anyone looking for more stock on the ground needs to be at the National Sale in 2025.”
