The Gai Waterhouse and Adrain Bott-trained Kakadu Sunset (Extreme Choice) made an impressive debut in a 1250-metre handicap at Canterbury on Wednesday.
A daughter of Extreme Choice (Not A Single Doubt), the filly finished strongly to beat Avenue Montaigne (Pierro) by 0.3 lengths under Adam Hyeronimus.
There was another 0.4 lengths back to Ernaux (I Am Invincible) in third place.
“Adam gave her a patient ride which is probably what she needs at this stage of her career as she continues to strengthen up,” Bott said.
“She has always shown us nice signs initially and she is open to a lot of improvement going forward.”
Winning rider Hyeronimus feels the filly can do a lot better with time on her side.
“I’ve been in a little bit of a love-hate relationship with her as I fell off her once when she was a baby, but she has progressed a lot since then,” he said.
“When she was a baby, I wouldn’t say she was erratic, but she was just very green and did things wrong because of her immaturity., but she walked around the enclosure today quietly and her whole mannerisms have been fantastic.
“She still needs to strengthen up, but there is a lot of upside.”
Kakadu Sunset was purchased by her trainers and Bruce Slade’s Kestrel Thoroughbreds for $420,000 from the Newgate Farm draft at last year’s Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.
She is out of the Listed winner Typing (Sebring), making her a half-sister to Listed-placed winner Mixed Spice (Russian Revolution).
