Rich Enuff given fee increase as Woodside releases five-strong roster
Eddie Hirsch’s Woodside Park Stud, just days after completing a deal for Shalaa (Invincible Spirit) to relocate to the Victorian farm, has confirmed a roster of five for 2023.
The former Arrowfield Stud stallion Shalaa, who will stand for $22,000 (all fees inc GST), will stand alongside the “underrated” Foxwedge (Fastnet Rock) ($11,000), The Quokka (1200m) winner Overpass’s sire Vancouver (Medaglia D’Oro) ($11,000) and Rich Enuff (Written Tycoon), a consistent sire whose fee has increased to $11,000.
The Juddmonte-bred stakes winner Delaware, by champion racehorse and sire Frankel (Galileo), will stand for a slightly reduced $8,800 in his second season at Woodside Park.
Woodside Park’s head of stallion nominations Mark Dodemaide revealed early feedback on the acquisition of Shalaa had been positive, but he was also buoyed by the supporting roster at the Tylden property.
Dodemaide believes Foxwedge continues to sire high-quality horses at a value for money service fee, while Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Vancouver also commands more respect as a sire.
“Foxwedge has sired 25 stakes winners, five Group 1 winners and he was the third top-priced colt at the Easter sale, so he’s a very good sort. When you compare apples with apples, he is hard to beat, Foxwedge,” Dodemaide told ANZ Bloodstock News.
“He is totally underrated in my view.”
Rich Enuff had daughters Rich Fortune and Diamonds win stakes races this season, while Demolish, Rich Gina and Belle Et Riche have also attained black type but it is the stallion’s growing reputation in Hong Kong which makes him a target for the trade market, according to Dodemaide.
“He’s had five runners in Hong Kong for four winners… Mighty Stride has won three races, Scotch Tycoon has won three races and there’s a couple of other good winners,” he said.
“One made $140,000 at Premier and one made $160,000 and another made $145,000 at Classic. He just keeps getting winners – he’s at 66 per cent winners to runners – and a lot of those horses have only had a couple of starts. He’ll end up over 70 per cent when his progeny get a bit older.”
He added: “He is a great trade option. They’re normally big, strong, good-looking horses. When you think about his service fee, if you said to me, ‘get me a trade option for ten grand’ I couldn’t think of anything better than him.
“Because of his success in Hong Kong, there’s been others who have gone up there, so the likelihood is that those winners will keep coming.”
Delaware, meanwhile, proved extremely fertile in his first season at stud and Dodemaide said the US track record-winning sprinter-miler was a viable out-cross option for breeders.
“He sat on the pace (in his 26-start career) and you hear some judges say they like stallions who sat on the pace when they were racehorses and then be able to accelerate and that was exactly what he did,” Dodemaide said.
Tosen Stardom (Deep Impact), the 2017 Toorak Handicap (Gr 1, 1600m) and Mackinnon Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) winner, is likely to stay in Europe after shuttling to Ireland late last year, having spent five years at Woodside.
