Second for Ardrossan

New winners

Ardrossan (pictured above) – Waikato Stud’s first season sire Ardrossan (Redoute’s Choice) earned his second individual winner courtesy of Sako’s (2 g ex Miss Maren by Stravinsky) win over 1200 metres at Trentham. The two-year-old gelding was last seen running last of five runners in the Matamata Slipper Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) last month. Sako defeated No Rain Ever (No Nay Never) by a length, while Tower Flypass (U S Navy Flag) was a further neck further away in third. Ardrossan, who has had five starters to date, stood the 2022 season for a fee of NZ$6,000 (plus GST). 

Bolt D’Oro – Former Spendthrift Farm shuttler Bolt D’Oro (Medaglia D’Oro) sired his second southern hemisphere-bred winner when the Gary White-trained Bobble (2 f ex Pompon by Helmet) broke her maiden at the third time of asking at Hobart. The two-year-old filly defeated Hilarity (All Too Hard) by a length, while Geegees Down South (Wordsmith) was another three-quarters of a length away in third. Bobble is the first foal out of two-time Tasmanian winner Pompon (Helmet). Bolt D’Oro shuttled to Australia for one season in 2019 where he covered 104 mares. The stallion’s global tally of winners stands at 36 from 98 starters, including six stakes winners. Bolt D’Oro stands at Spendthrift Farm in Kentucky for a fee of US$35,000 (approx. AU$52,270).

Trapeze Artist – Tumbling (2 c ex Viviette by Invincible Spirit) provided Widden Stud’s first season sire Trapeze Artist (Snitzel) with a fifth individual winner from 15 starters when landing a 1000-metre maiden plate on debut at Ballarat. Ridden by Beau Mertens for trainers Ciaron Maher and David Eustace, the juvenile colt came with an irresistible run down the centre of the track and readily swept aside his rivals, beating Loose On Gin (Turn Me Loose) by two lengths, with a further short-head back to Hedged (Capitalist) in third place. First sold as a weanling for $330,000, Tumbling was a $650,000 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale purchase for Maher from the Vinery Stud draft. Tumbling holds an entry for the ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) on April 1. He is the first foal out of the unraced Invincible Spirit (Green Desert) mare Viviette, herself a half-sister to Group 3-placed winner Halimi (Teofilo), being out of the Group 3 winner Vincennes (King’s Best). Trapeze Artist stood for a fee of $55,000 (inc GST) in 2022.

US Navy Flag – The Oaks Stud shuttler US Navy Flag (War Front) sired his second individual winner when Aprilia (2 f ex Miss Avalon by Fantastic Light) struck in a two-year-old maiden over 1200 metres at Matamata. The Andrew Forsman-trained filly won by a half-length ahead of Te Akau’s Fiore Di Campo (Savabeel), with The Princie One (Savabeel) finishing in third, a length from the winner. Bred by former Valachi Downs Stud owner Kevin Hickman, Aprilia is owned by Lib Petagna’s JML Bloodstock and Brown Thoroughbreds. She is the eighth foal out of Irish-bred mare Miss Avalon (Fantastic Light), making her a half-sister to Group 1 winner Vespa (Elusive City) and Group 2 scorer Hazzabeel (Zabeel). US Navy Flag, who is also the sire of the stakes-placed To Catch A Thief, stood the 2022 season for a fee of $15,000 (plus GST). He has had 13 starters.

New Group / Grade 1 winners

El Roca – Fresh from her victory at Listed level, the Mark Walker-trained Romancing The Moon (3 f ex Underthemoonlight by El Hermano) took a huge step up in class in her stride as she posted an impressive win in the Levin Classic (Gr 1, 1600m) at Trentham, and in the process handed Westbury Stud resident El Roca (Fastnet Rock) his second individual Group 1 winner. The three-year-old filly defeated Skew Wiff (Savabeel) by a length and a half, with Luella Cristina (Snitzel) a further length and a quarter adrift in third. Romancing The Moon was purchased by David Ellis of Te Akau for NZ$50,000 at Book 1 of the 2021 New Zealand Bloodstock Yearling Sale from the Westbury Stud draft. The filly joins Travelling Light, who incidentally also won the Levin Classic, as the stallion’s other elite-level winner. A son of Fastnet Rock (Danehill), El Roca has sired 120 winners from 201 starters and he stood for a fee of NZ$12,500 (plus GST) in 2022. 

Lonhro – Darley’s stalwart stallion Lonhro (Octagonal) chalked up his 13th individual Group 1 winner, which sees his total number of individual stakes winners swell to 95, when the Chris Waller-trained Lindermann (3 c ex Self Esteem by Stratum) battled on tenaciously to win the Rosehill Guineas (Gr 1, 2000m). The colt went into the race having been narrowly denied victory when beaten by Communist (Russian Revolution) in the Randwick Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m). However, he was not going to be downed again, producing a gutsy effort to defeat the Godolphin-raced Pericles (Street Boss) by a nose as the pair drew three lengths clear of the third-placed Williamsburg (Snitzel). Bred by the Kepitis Family’s Woppitt Bloodstock, Lindermann is one of two winners out of the stakes-placed mare Self Esteem (Stratum) and he hails from the same family as multiple Group 1 winner Assertive Lad (Zeditave). Lonhro, who is the sire of 1000 winners in total from 1394 starters, stood the 2022 season for a fee of $55,000 (inc GST).

Pride Of Dubai – Coolmore Australia-based Pride Of Dubai (Street Cry) was handed his second individual Group 1 winner when the northern hemisphere-bred Dubai Honour (5 g ex Mondelice by Montjeu) showed his rivals a clean pair of heels in the Ranvet Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) at Rosehill. A dual Group 2 winner in France, the William Haggas-trained gelding was angled out of the pack by Ryan Moore halfway up the straight and he pulled away to saunter to an easy four and a half length win over four-time Group 1 winner Montefilia (Kermadec). Dual Group 1 winner Mo’unga (Savabeel) came home another length away in third. The victory handed Haggas a second win in the Group 1, having taken it out in 2020 with Addeybb (Pivotal). Dubai Honour is from the first northern hemisphere crop of Pride Of Dubai, who shuttled to Coolmore’s Irish base for three seasons. In winning the race, Dubai Honour joins Bella Nipotina as the stallion’s other elite-level winner.  Pride Of Dubai’s total winning haul sits at 201 from 396 starters and he commanded a fee of $16,500 (inc GST) last year.

Satono Aladdin – Rich Hill Stud’s Japanese shuttler ​​Satono Aladdin (Deep Impact) added a second Group 1 winner to his tally when Pennyweka (3 f ex Threepence by Pentire) landed the New Zealand Oaks (Gr 1, 2400m) at Trentham. The filly went into the Classic following a fast-finishing placing in the Desert Gold Stakes (Gr 3, 1600m) two starts back at Trentham, while she was last seen finishing third in the Lowland Stakes (Gr 3, 2100m) at Awapuni. However, she produced her best performance to date when it really mattered, beating Mehzebeen (Almanzor) by an emphatic three lengths. Mischief Managed (Derryn) was a further long-neck away in third. Satono Aladdin, who has now sired four individual stakes winners, stood for a fee of $12,500 (plus GST) in 2022. He has had 156 starters.

Snitzel – Arrowfield Stud resident Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice) sired his 19th individual Group 1 winner, and sixth individual two-year-old Group 1 winner, when Shinzo (2 c ex Samaready by More Than Ready) landed the Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) at Rosehill. Shinzo, who becomes just the fourth horse to claim the Pago Pago Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m)-Golden Slipper double, snuck up the rails under visiting British jockey Ryan Moore to win by a length and a quarter ahead of $3.40 favourite Cylinder (Exceed And Excel). King’s Gambit (I Am Invincible) came with a rousing run for third, but could not catch the leaders in finishing two and a half lengths from the winner. Shinzo, who was bred by Coolmore and races for a Coolmore-led ownership group, is out of dual Group 1 winner Samaready (More Than Ready), making the colt a brother to Magic Millions 2YO Classic (RL, 1200m) winner Exhilarates. Samaready, who won the Blue Diamond Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) before finishing third in the Golden Slipper, was purchased by Coolmore for $1.8 million carrying Shinzo in utero at the 2020 Inglis Chairman’s Sale. Four-time champion sire Snitzel, who has had 1426 starters, stood for a fee of $220,000 (inc GST) in 2022.

Toronado – Mariamia (6 m Toronado – Quinta Lago by Encosta De Lago) became the fourth individual Group 1 winner for Swettenham Stud’s Toronado (High Chaparral) when she earned her sire back-to-back triumphs in The Galaxy (Gr 1, 1100m) at Rosehill. Trained by Joe Pride, Mariamia won by just short of a length ahead of Uncommon James (Cable Bay) and Cannonball (Capitalist), who held on for third, a length and a half from the winner. Bred by Adam Sangster, Mariamia was picked up by John Kelly’s Newhaven Park for $335,000 from an Inglis Digital auction in April last year, having sold as a yearling for $18,000 at the Inglis Premier sale. Mariamia added to her victory in the Expressway Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) in January as she took her race record to eight wins from 37 starts. Toronado, who has had 618 runners, covered 150 mares at Swettenham last spring for a fee of $80,000 (inc GST).

New stakes winners

Astern – Darley stallion Astern (Lonhro) sired his eighth individual stakes winner when Parisal (3 f ex Circular by Street Cry) won the Typhoon Tracy Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) at Moonee Valley. Parisal broke through for a first stakes win at her fifth start, beating Wee Nessy (Snitzel) by a neck. Lady Laguna (Overshare) finished a head further back in third. Parisal is the second foal out of the Group 3-winning Street Cry (Machiavellian) mare Circular. Astern, who has had 229 runners, stood for a fee of $11,000 (inc GST) in 2022.

Contributer – The Darryn and Briar Weatherley-trained Maria Farina (5 m ex La Vitesse by Darci Brahma) came out on top in a blanket finish to the Lightning Handicap (Listed, 1200m) at Trentham, securing her first win at stakes level and providing Mapperley Stud resident Contributer (High Chaparral) with his sixth individual black type winner. Last seen running fourth at Pukekohe, the five-year-old bounced back to winning ways to defeat Shamus (Shamexpress) by a nose, while Not Guilty (Not A Single Doubt) was a further half-length away in third. Contributer, who has had 107 starters for 68 winners, stood for a fee of NZ$20,000 (plus GST) in 2022.

Declaration Of War – Tamamo Black Tie (3 c ex Tamamo Earring by Black Tide) provided his sire Declaration Of War (War Front) with a 47th individual stakes winner when coming out on top in a close finish to the Sho Falcon Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) at Chukyo. The Koichi Tsunoda-trained colt crossed the line a nose in front of runner-up Carro Veloce (Silver State), with Thousand Sunny (Talismanic) three lengths away in third. Declaration Of War, who has had 634 starters, stands at Shizunai Stallion Station for a fee of ¥2,500,000 (approx. AU$28,055).

Galiway – Galileo’s (Sadler’s Wells) son Galiway sired his tenth individual stakes winner when Harry Way (3 g ex Miss Vinga by High Rock) landed the Prix Francois Mathet (Listed, 2100m) at Saint-Cloud. Trained by Nicolas Perret, the three-year-old was winning for the third time in six starts as he defeated Winter Pudding (Seahenge) by a length. Back To Black (Al Wukair) was a further three-quarters of a length away in third. Harry Way is the third foal out of the placed Miss Vinga (High Rock). Galiway, who has had 117 starters, stands at Haras de Colleville for a fee of €30,000 (approx. AU$47,760).

Gleneagles – The Chris Waller-trained Timour (5 g ex Rock My Soul by Clodovil) produced a brave performance to win the NE Manion Cup (Gr 3, 2400m) at Rosehill and in doing so, emulated his half-brother Young Rascal (Intello), who won the race in 2020. Timour provided Coolmore Stud’s Gleneagles (Galileo) with his 25th individual stakes winner and first in Australia. Raced by Terry Henderson’s OTI Racing, the gelding came home strongly to clinch victory from the jaws of defeat, beating Raging Bull (Bull Point) by a nose with long-time leader Sir Lucan (Camelot) the same distance away in third. Gleneagles, who stands at Coolmore’s Irish base, has had 330 runners for 192 winners and his stakes winners are headed by Group 1-winning pair Loving Dream and Highland Chief. The son of Galileo stands for a fee of €17,500 (approx. AU$28,000).

Harbinger – Harbinger (Dansili) sired his 25th individual stakes winner courtesy of a success for Emu (3 f ex Sourire by Special Week) in the Flower Cup (Gr 3, 1800m) at Nakayama. Trained by Shoichiro Wada, the filly beat Hip Hop Soul (Kitasan Black) by a half-length, with Pulchritude (Gun Runner) a further length and a half behind in third. Harbinger, who has had 981 starters, stands at Shadai Stallion Station for a fee of  ¥3,500,000 (approx. AU$39,275).

I Am Invincible – Champion sire I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit) was provided with his 91st individual stakes winner when the Ciaron Maher and David Eustace-trained She’s All Class (4 m ex Shirra Nui by Viscount) landed the Abell Stakes (Listed, 1200m) at Moonee Valley. Making her 16th start, the mare notched her maiden stakes win and second victory overall by beating In The Boat (Nostradamus) by a neck. Mileva (Headwater) finished a length from the winner in third. She’s All Class was a $200,000 buy for Brae Sokolski from the Yarraman Park draft at the 2020 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale. She is one of six winners from as many to race out of the unraced mare Shirra Nui (Viscount). I Am Invincible, who has had 1005 runners, stood the 2022 season at Yarraman Park for a fee of $247,500 (inc GST).

Legislate – Bureau Des Legende (4 f ex Arabian Winter by Western Winter) became the seventh individual stakes winner for her sire Legislate (Dynasty) when posting a shock success in the Jacaranda Handicap (Listed, 1800m) at Turffontein. The Robyn Klaasen-trained four-year-old was winning for the sixth time in 21 starts as she beat Queen Of Shadows (Vercingetorix) by a neck. Terra Time (Time Thief) was another half-length away in third. Bureau Des Legende is the best of three foals to race out of the Listed-placed winner Arabian Winter (Western Winter). Legislate, who has had 33 starters, stands at Cheveley Stud in South Africa for a fee of R5,000 (approx. AU$400).

Lope De Vega – Autumn Starlight (3 f ex Falling Leaves by Galileo) stretched her unbeaten record to two with a victory in the Prix La Camargo (Listed, 1600m) and in the process provided Lope De Vega (Shamardal) with his 106th individual stakes winner. Trained by Stephane Wattel, the filly beat favourite Heavenly Breath (Dark Angel) by a nose with Palerma (Alex The Winner) a length and a half behind in third. A €150,000 buy at the Arqana Deauville sale as a yearling, Autumn Starlight is the fourth foal out of the Galileo mare Falling Leaves, who herself is a sister to, among others, the Listed winner Delphinia, hailing from the family of Montjeu (Sadler’s Wells). Former shuttle stallion Lope De Vega, who has had 1115 starters, stands at Ballylinch Stud for a fee of €125,000 (approx. AU$200,615).

Lord Kanaloa – Shadai Stallion Station resident Lord Kanaloa (King Kamehameha) earned his 39th individual stakes winner when Bellagio Opera (3 c ex Air Routine by Harbinger) maintained his unbeaten record in the Sho Spring Stakes (Japanese 2000 Guineas Trial) (Gr 2, 1800m) at Nakayama. A winner of both of his starts as a juvenile, the Hiroyuki Uemura-trained colt defeated Ho O Biscuits (Mind Your Biscuits) by a length and a quarter, while Metal Speed (Silver State) was another three-quarters of a length further adrift in third. Bellagio Opera was bought by Be Project Co for ¥48,510,000 (approx. AU$549,600) at the 2022 JRHA Chiba Thoroughbred Sale as a two-year-old. Lord Kanaloa’s stakes winners are headed by seven Group 1 winners, including Blue Diamond Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) winner-turned-Yulong Stud-based sire Tagaloa. Lord Kanaloa, who has had 995 starters, stands for a fee of ¥12,000,000 (approx. AU$137,000).

Maurice – Bank Maur (3 c ex Banksia by Redoute’s Choice) became the 12th individual stakes winner from 516 starters for his sire Maurice (Screen Hero) when winning the Alister Clark Stakes (Gr 2, 2040m) at Moonee Valley. The three-year-old won by three-quarters of a length ahead of $41 outsider Suizuro (Real Impact). Japanese Emperor (Satano Aladdin) finished the same margin further back in third, in what was a trifecta for Japanese-bred stallions. Trained by Richard Laming, Bank Maur took his overall record to three wins from nine starts. He was a $130,000 buy for his trainer from the Milburn Creek draft at the 2021 Inglis Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale. Bank Maur is the first foal out of the winning Redoute’s Choice (Danehill) mare Banksia, herself a three-quarter sister to Group 1 winner Foxwedge (Fastnet Rock). Maurice stood at Arrowfield Stud for a fee of $82,500 (inc GST) in 2022.

Pierro – The Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained Stonecoat (3 g ex Princess Mia by Fastnet Rock) provided Pierro (Lonhro) with a 34th individual stakes winner from 539 starters when coming home a neck winner of the Morphettville Guineas (Listed, 1600m). Sent off a $6 chance under Jordan Childs, the gelding made every post a winning one in the 1600-metre contest, holding on well in the closing stages from the strong challenging runner-up Dashing (Magnus). Field The Moment (Deep Field) finished third, beaten two lengths by the winner. Bred by Evergreen Rich, Stonecoat was a $475,000 Magic Millions purchase from the Evergreen Stud Farm draft for his trainers in conjunction with Kestrel Thoroughbreds. He is the only foal out of the Fastnet Rock mare Princess Mia, a winning half-sister to Group 3 scorers Thewizardofoz (Redoute’s Choice) and Argentia (Frankel) out of the four-time Group 1 winner Princess Coup (Encosta De Lago), who died in 2021. Pierro stands at Coolmore Australia for a fee of $99,000 (inc GST).

Rebel Raider – Rebel Racer (6 g ex Just Sybil by Alannan) provided his sire Rebel Raider (Reset) with a sixth individual stakes winner from 229 starters when landing the Adelaide Cup (Gr 2, 3200m) at Morphettville. Trained by Amy and Ash Yargi, the six-year-old gelding made all under Craig Newitt at odds of $26, rallying in very game fashion when challenged in the closing stages by Aurora’s Symphony (Glass Harmonium) to deny that rival by a head. Amade (Casamento) finished third, beaten a length by the winner. Bred by The Toorak Thoroughbred Breeding Trust, Rebel Racer was passed in short of his $50,000 reserve when offered by Mill Park at the 2018 Magic Million Adelaide Yearling Sale. He was purchased by his trainers at this year’s Inglis January (Early) Online Sale for $35,000. Rebel Racer is the sole winner from four to race out of the stakes-winning Alannan (Conquistador Cielo) mare Just Sybil, who has a yearling filly by Sir Prancealot (Tamayuz) and foaled a Churchill (Galileo) filly last spring. Victoria Derby (Gr 1, 2500m) and South Australian Derby (Gr 1, 2500m) scorer Rebel Raider died of a heart attack in 2019.

Red Jazz – Seven-year-old gelding Bridge Jazzaraat (7 g ex Heyaaraat by Lawman) handed his sire Red Jazz (Johannesburg) with a fourth individual stakes winner when winning the Premio Circo Massimo (Listed, 2000m) at Rome. Bridge Jazzaraat defeated Devolvido (Desert Prince) with Emperor Of Love (Ribchester) in third. Red Jazz, who has had 169 starters, stood at Gestüt Lindenhof in Germany for the 2022 breeding season for a fee of €5,000 (approx. AU$7,990).

Rip Van Winkle – Gin Martini (4 m ex Lotteria by Redoute’s Choice), who was last seen running sixth behind Thalassophile (Not A Single Doubt) in the Aspiration Quality (Gr 3, 1600m), was able to reverse the form with that rival when she landed the the Epona Stakes (Gr 3, 1900m) at Rosehill. Trained by John Sargent, the four-year-old mare galloped home impressively to beat her old rival by a quarter of a length. Douceur (No Nay Never) was a further length adrift in third. In winning the race, the mare handed her sire, Rip Van Winkle (Galileo), with his 26th individual stakes winner from 786 starters. The son of Galileo died at New Zealand’s Windsor Park in 2020.

Rubick – Swettenham Stud resident Rubick (Encosta De Lago) sired his ninth individual stakes winner when the Luke Pepper-trained Opal Ridge (3 f ex Chadana by Myboycharlie) tasted stakes victory for the first time when landing the Darby Munro Stakes (Listed, 1200m) at Rosehill. Runner-up in the Heritage Stakes (Listed, 1100m) in September, the filly was forced to be scratched before her intended start in the Inglis Sprint (1200m) on March 4 after being found to be lame. However, she showed no ill-effects from that recent health scare, scampering away to beat Kote (Choisir) by a little under two lengths. Spacewalk (Exosphere) was a neck further back in third. The filly was bought for $20,000 from the Carramar Park draft at the Inglis Classic Yearling Sale in 2021. Rubick has had 206 winners from 371 starters and his progeny is led by dual Group 1 winner Jacquinot and The Everest (1200m) winner, turned Coolmore Stud-based sire, Yes Yes Yes. Rubick was offered at a fee of $22,000 (inc GST) last breeding season.

Savabeel – Avebury (3 f ex O’Dianne by O’Reilly) provided Waikato Stud stallion Savabeel (Zabeel) with a 132nd individual stakes winner from 1205 starters when coming home a comfortable winner of the Canberra Guineas (Listed, 1400m). Ridden by Kerrin McEvoy for John O’Shea, the filly made up ground in stylish fashion entering the home straight and readily swept aside long-time leader Kimberley Secrets (Wandjina) before pulling clear to beat Wolverine (Tivaci) by one and a quarter lengths, with a further three-quarters of a length back to the third-placed Smooth Sailing (Your Song). A $200,000 purchase for her trainer from the Waikato Stud draft at the 2021 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, Avebury is out of the O’Reilly (Last Tycoon) mare O’Dianne, herself a daughter of the Group 3 winner Breezy (Pins), making her a sister to Queensland Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) runner-up Paternal. Eight-time champion New Zealand sire Savabeel stands for a private fee.

Shamus Award – The Leon MacDonald and Andrew Gluyas-trained Another Award (5 m ex El Milagro by Encosta De Lago) ran out a stylish victor of the Matrice Stakes (Listed, 1200m) at Morphettville, providing Shamus Award (Snitzel) with a 21st individual stakes winner from 308 starters. Ridden by Jason Holder, the five-year-old mare pounced on long-time leader Philonize (Reward For Effort) inside the final furlong and took up the lead with 100 yards to go, staying on strongly to beat Outlaws Revenge (Reward For Effort) by one and a half lengths. Philonize finished back in third place, beaten two and three-quarter lengths at the line. A $150,000 Magic Millions Adelaide purchase for her trainers out of her breeders Willow Grove Studs’ draft, who retain a share in her ownership, Another Award is a half-sister to dual Group 3 winner Tequila Time (Stratum) and stakes winner Inner Warrior (God’s Own), being the third stakes scorer from five winners out of the Encosta De Lago (Fairy King) mare El Milagro. Shamus Award stands at Rosemont Stud for $88,000 (inc GST).

Shocking – In winning the New Zealand St Leger (Listed, 2600m) at Trentham, the Darryn and Briar Weatherley-trained Ess Vee Are (4 g ex Reiveke by O’Reilly) handed his sire Shocking (Street Cry) with a 20th individual stakes winner. The four-year-old gelding stayed on impressively to beat Fierce Flight (Flying Artie) by a neck, while Rapid Falls (Sacred Falls) came home another length away in third. Standing at Rich Hill Stud, Shocking’s stakes winners are spearheaded by Group 1 winners Fanatic, Defibrillate and I’m Thunderstruck. The sire of 184 winners from 351 starters, Shocking stood at Rich Hill for a fee of NZ$12,500 (plus GST) in 2022.

Showtime – Arrowfield Stud’s first season sire Showtime (Snitzel) notched his first stakes winner from eight starters when Show Royale (2 f ex Ducey Du by Royal Academy) landed the Cinderella Stakes (Listed, 1050m) at Morphettville. Ridden by Joe Bowditch for Lloyd Kennewell, the juvenile filly came down the centre of the track with a late effort to deny Bossy Nic (Nicconi) by a neck at the line with a further head back to the third-placed Shesallshenanigans (Toronado) in a tight finish. Show Royale went through the Inglis Classic ring last year, fetching $85,000 for vendors Goodwood Farm following her purchase by Kennewell Racing and Group 1 Bloodstock. The filly has now won both career starts and over $72,000 in prize-money. Showtime stands for a fee of $11,000 (inc GST).

Tavistock – Cambridge Stud’s late stallion Tavistock (Montjeu) was provided with his 42 individual stakes winner from 717 starters when talented mare Pearl Of Alsace (4 m ex Irion by Danroad) maintained her unbeaten record from five starts in the Cuddle Stakes (Gr 3, 1600m) at Trentham. Having her first foray into stakes company, the Shaune Ritchie and Colm Murray-trained four-year-old did not have things her own way, but came out on top in a close finish to defeat Aromatic (Sacred Falls) by a nose. Bad ‘N’ Bouj (Deep Field) was the same margin further away in third. Bred and raced by Sir Peter Vela, Pearl Of Alsace is out of the Group 2-placed mare Irion (Danroad), making her a half-sister to Group 2 winner Zourion (Zoustar). Tavistock, the sire of 494 winners, died in 2019.

Territories – Live To Tell (2 f ex Pellicle by Sepoy) outlined her credentials as a horse to follow when convincingly winning the Supremacy Stakes (Listed, 1000m) at Ascot, being installed as the odds-on favourite for the Karrakatta Plate (Gr 2, 1200m) next month. The Simon Miller-trained juvenile eased to a length-and-a-half victory over Platinum Shot (Shooting To Win) and More Special (Safeguard), who finished three lengths from the winner in third. Live To Tell was a $100,000 buy for Miller from the Fernrigg Farm draft at the 2021 Inglis Australian Weanling Sale. She is the first foal out of the placed mare Pellicle (Sepoy). Live To Tell became the ninth individual stakes winner for her sire Territories (Invincible Spirit), who has had 257 runners. The stallion stands the 2023 breeding season at Dalham Hall Stud for a fee of £10,000 (approx. AU$18,185).

Toronado – Beltoro (5 g ex Believabeel by Zabeel) provided Swettenham Stud shuttler Toronado with a 32nd individual stakes winner when running out a narrow winner of the CS Hayes Memorial Cup (Listed, 1600m) at Morphettville. Ridden by Teodore Nugent for Robert Hickmott, the five-year-old gelding held on well in the closing stages from the fast-finishing En Francais (Puissance De Lune) to win by a head with a further two lengths back to Lacrima (Dark Valley) in third place. Beltoro scored in his first two starts and finished sixth in the Australian Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m), after which the owners turned down an offer of $1.2 million from Hong Kong. Bred by Three Bridges Thoroughbreds and Delbridge Racing, Beltoro is the best of three winners to race out of the Zabeel (Sir Tristram) mare Believabeel, who has a yearling colt by Needs Further (Encosta De Lago) and was covered by Nicconi (Bianconi) last spring after missing in 2021.

Wootton Bassett – Coolmore’s Wootton Bassett (Iffraaj) sired his 31st individual stakes winner when American Flag (3 c ex Tres Americanqueen by American Post) justified his place at the head of the market with a three-length win in the Prix Omnium (Listed, 1600m) at Saint-Cloud. Now the winner of two of his three starts, the Yann Barberot-trained colt beat Kendly (Kendargent) with Birr Castle (Cloth Of Stars) finishing third, four and three-quarter lengths behind the winner. Bought for €102,000 at the Arqana Deauville sale as a yearling, American Flag is the eighth foal out of Tres Americanqueen (American Post), herself a half-sister to Group 2 winner Tres Blue (Anabaa Blue). Wootton Bassett, who has had 384 starters, stands for a fee of €150,000 (approx. AU$240,735) and shuttles to Australia where he stood the 2022 season for a fee of $71,500 (inc GST).
