The Chris Waller-trained three-year-old Sixties (Flying Artie) announced himself as a colt with considerable promise with a dominant seven-length maiden win in the Inglis Xtra Bonus Maiden Handicap (1150m) at Randwick-Kensington on Wednesday.
A brother to multiple Group 1 winner Artorius, Sixties was making his third race-day appearance following a second placing last-start.
From the jump, James McDonald positioned Sixties just outside the leader, and on straightening, when asked for an effort and the Aramco Racing-owned colt surged clear, with the Group 3-placed Sanctified (Super Seth) running into second and Woodrow (Exceed and Excel) holding third.
“Really good,” Waller said. “He’s improved with each run. We’ve always had a bit of time for him, but it’s just taken a bit longer than we thought to show it…I never get too far ahead of myself, but I’ll go away a bit more excited.”
McDonald was equally taken with the performance.
“It was spectacular…he’s very professional,” he said. “He’s learned his craft well…he’ll run seven [furlongs], but I wouldn’t think he’d run much further. I think he’s pretty fast, and when the penny starts to drop, he’ll get quicker.”
Purchased for $350,000 from Vinery Stud’s Inglis Easter draft in 2024, the Greg Perry-bred colt is the fourth winner from Redoute’s Choice (Danehill) mare Gracie’s Lass, a half-sister to Waller’s former Group 1 winner Delectation (Shamardal).
