Tarzino fee jumps on the back of continued success
Westbury Stud has handed their young sire Tarzino (Tavistock) a rise in service fee to $25,000 (all fees NZD and plus GST) on the back of continued success following his two Group 1 winners last season.
Tarzino, who will enter his seventh year at stud this spring, sired South Australian Derby (Gr 1, 2500m) winner Jungle Magnate and Queensland Oaks (Gr 1, 2400m) heroine Gypsy Goddess in 2022, prompting breeders to support the VRC Derby (Gr 1, 2500m) and Rosehill Guineas (Gr 1, 2000m) winner with his biggest ever book of 197 mares last year, at a fee of $15,000.
This season, the sire has earned further black type with Bitcoin in New Zealand, as well as Adrian Knox Stakes (Gr 3, 2000m) runner-up Mountain Guest and ANZAC Day Stakes (Listed, 1400m) third Foreign Raider in Australia.
“Tarzino, with his two Australian Group 1 winners in his first crop, it’s a very rare feat for a stallion to achieve,” Westbury Stud’s general manager Russell Warwick told ANZ Bloodstock News.
“They’ve sold really well this year throughout all of the sales and that’s really given us the confidence to warrant putting the horse up.
“He’s going to get a good book again and I think he’s very reasonably priced. He’s got some really nice horses coming through at the moment, two-year-olds that aren’t two-year-olds coming through.
“He has the numbers of mares to substantiate that, having served more mares in New Zealand than any other stallion last year. It was not only his biggest book, but his highest quality, also.”
Joining Tarzino in earning a fee increase this year is El Roca (Fastnet Rock), who will stand for a fee of $15,000 this year.
El Roca added to his first crop Group 1 winner Travelling Light with Levin Classic (Gr 1, 1600m) winner Romancing The Moon this season.
The Mark Walker-trained filly finished fourth in the New Zealand 1,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) in November, before back-to-back stakes wins in March which saw her score at Listed level before her Group 1 success at Trentham.
Furthermore, the stallion’s success in Hong Kong, where he has sired seven winners from eight runners, including the Group 2 winner Lucky Patch, has prompted a fee increase for his ninth season at stud.
“There’s only ten stallions standing in New Zealand this year that have two or more Group 1 winners, and he’s one of them,” Warwick said.
“He’s a good, young stallion by Fastnet Rock and punching well above his weight.
“He’s been very prominent in Hong Kong, as well, so his yearlings will be well sought after there.”
Reliable Man (Dalakhani), the sire of Group 1 winners Miami Bound, Sentimental Miss and Inspirational Girl, the latter who sold for $1.1 million at last week’s Inglis Chairman’s Sale, will stand for a fee of $13,500, a slight decrease from $16,000 last season.
Rising 17-year-old Redwood (High Chaparral), who this season sired Spring Champion Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) and New Zealand Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) winner Sharp ‘N’ Smart, will stand for a slightly increased fee of $10,000.
Redwood also produced Platinum Invador, who took out the Auckland Cup (Gr 2, 3200m) after returning from a tendon injury, as well as Tuchel, who was narrowly beaten in the Hong Kong Derby (Listed, 2000m).
“Redwood has a new stakes winner here on the weekend (Solidify) and has Antino who is on a Stradbroke (Handicap) path,” Warwick said.
“Redwood, at $10,000, probably makes him sound very, very cheap given the results he continues to churn out.”
Westbury Stud will add the Team Rogerson-trained Ferrando (Fast ‘N’ Famous) to the roster. The Group 3 winner, who stood at Rogerson’s stud for the first years, covering 142 mares, will stand for a fee of $5,000 this year.
Swiss Ace (Secret Savings) rounds out the roster at an unchanged $5,000, with Telperion (Street Cry) having been exported overseas.
