Bosustow shines in Magic Millions 3YO Guineas

Bosustow (Blue Point) atoned for a few near miss performances when he produced an impressive victory in Friday night’s Magic Millions 3YO Guineas (RL, 1400m) at the Gold Coast.

The son of Darley shuttler Blue Point (Shamardal) came into the race having been placed in stakes company on four occasions, including running third behind Broadsiding (Too Darn Hot) in last season’s JJ Atkins (Gr 1, 1600m) and second in The Amanda Elliott (Listed, 1400m) on Melbourne Cup day at Flemington.

Arriving into Friday’s contest on the back of a sixth-placed effort in the Vo Rogue Plate (Gr 3, 1300m) on December 28, where he was beaten just two lengths by winner Give Me Space (Cosmic Force), the colt was sent off a $13 chance in the market under Joshua Parr.

Situated in mid-pack rounding the home bend, Parr got to work on Bosustow and the pair began to make inroads on the leaders with 300 metres left to run.

Hitting the front with a sustained effort inside the final 50 metres of the contest, the Annabel Neasham and Rob Archibald-trained colt was made to sweat slightly as his old rival Give Me Space charged down the outside, however the pair held on at the line to defy the runner-up by 0.2 lengths.

The Bjorn Baker-trained Arriving Home (I Am Invincible) finished a further 0.8 lengths back in third place.

Neasham revealed her delight at the win for the Rosemont Stud-led Victorian Alliance ownership which, along with bloodstock agent Suman Hedge, paid $900,000 for Bosustow out of the Segenhoe Stud draft at the 2023 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.

“It’s a big prize pot for a very well-bred colt with a great bunch of owners,” Neasham said.

“He’s been a little bit of a bridesmaid this horse – he’s obviously Group 1-placed up here behind Broadsiding and he was a bit unlucky not to win at Flemington during Cup week.

“He’s always been thereabouts and we knew he had a big one in him. It was timed to perfection by Josh – I could see he had a lap full of horse around the corner.

“I’m just so happy for Rosemont Stud and their partners.”

Parr, who was landing his second 3YO Guineas after victory aboard Fashion Legend (Deep Field) in 2023, was pleased to have got the win after the last-start defeat at Eagle Farm.

“I went to Brisbane specifically to ride him and I was very happy to have picked up the ride that day [in the Vo Rogue Plate],” Parr said.

“There were a few things that didn’t go his way that day – he was quite fresh, it was a hot, humid day and he got quite restless and agitated in the barriers and missed the start.

“Today, he was the ultimate professional. We sat midfield, three-wide with cover and his turn of foot was incredible.

“He was challenged late and he remained strong the last bit.”

Bosustow has now earned more than $1.95 million in prize-money courtesy of Friday’s success.

Out of the Listed-placed winning Canford Cliffs (Tagula) mare Bumbasina, Bosustow (3 c Blue Point – Bumbasina by Canford Cliffs) is a half-brother to stable companion and Group 1 scorer Amelia’s Jewel (Siyouni).

Amelia’s Jewel’s brother sold to $625,000 to Perth trainer Luke Fernie at last week’s Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.

Blue Point, who was siring his second individual stakes winner in Australia, now sits second on the second-season sires’ table behind Darley’s former shuttler Too Darn Hot (Dubawi), with a total of $402,110 separating the pair.

Blue Point will command a career-high fee of €100,000 (approx. AU$166,000) in the upcoming northern hemisphere breeding season.
