Lady Laguna added to National Broodmare Sale

Group 1-winning mare Lady Laguna (Overshare) is an early highlight of the supplementary catalogue for the Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale, which is set to take place on the Gold Coast on May 27-28.

A Group 2-placed winner as a juvenile and a Listed winner at three, Lady Laguna’s career highlight came when she easily beat Think About It (So You Think) and Espiona (Extreme Choice) in the Canterbury Stakes (Gr 1, 1300m) at Randwick, the jewel in the crown of a stellar four-year-old season

The seven-time winner was third last-start, beaten less than a length in the Sapphire Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) on April 12.

“Lady Laguna has been a dream for us to be involved with,” OTI director Gus Boyd said of the five-year-old.

“While her Canterbury Stakes was the pinnacle, we’re extremely proud of her consistency having finished in the top three of black type and feature races on 17 occasions. I’m not sure we’ve ever had another horse in our colours with an attitude as good as hers.”

Trained by Annabel Neahsam and Rob Archibald, Lady Laguna is out of Catalina De Lago (Encosta De Lago), herself a half-sister to Group 2 winner She Will Be Loved (Strategic).

Joining her OTI ownermate in being offered as a racing and breeding prospect is classy three-year-old Femminile (Dundeel), who was a strong seventh in the Australasian Oaks (Gr 1, 2400m) last Saturday behind Benagil (Manhattan Rain).

Winner of the Oaklands Plate (Listed, 1400m) at two, the Phillip Stokes-trained Dundeel (High Chaparral) filly is out of the stakes-placed Femme Fireball (Pierro), a sister to multiple Group winner Rock.

Both Lady Laguna and Femminile will be offered as part of the Newgate consignment.

The 2023 Magic Millions 2YO Classic (RL, 1200m) winner Skirt The Law (Better Than Ready) is another valuable addition, set to be offered in the Eureka Stud draft.

Winner of her first three starts culminating in success in the $2 million feature, the Tony Gollan-trained mare is from the stakes-placed mare Outlaw Kate (Exceed and Excel), a half-sister to Group 1-winning sprinter Masked Crusader (Toronado).

Magic Millions managing director Barry Bowditch said: “These early supplementary lots add to what is a truly world class catalogue. Lady Laguna, Femminile and Skirt The Law would be stand out prospects at any farm around the world. This is a catalogue that will present so many opportunities for all buyers no matter their budget.”

Supplementaries for both the National Broodmare and National Weanling Sales close on Monday, May 12.
