Mosheen’s Kitasan Black colt tops yearling session of JRHA Select Sale

A Kitasan Black (Black Tide) colt out of the four-time Australian Group 1 winner Mosheen (Fastnet Rock) proved the most popular during the yearling section of the JRHA Select Sale on Monday when he was purchased by Nebraska Racing for a session-topping ¥420,000,000 (approx. AU$4,344,842).

The daughter of Fastnet Rock (Danehill), whose top-flight wins included victories in the VRC Oaks (Gr 1, 2500m) and Australian Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m), is already the dam of three-time Grade 3 winner Primo Scene (Deep Impact) and stakes winner Danon Ayres Rock (Maurice), who brought ¥495,000,000 at the 2022 edition of this sale.

At the beginning of the day, the fourth foal out of the 2018 Thousand Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) winner Amphitrite (Sebring) brought ¥190,000,000 (approx. AU$1,965,360) when selling to DMM.com LLC.

The son of Lord Kanaloa is a half-brother to winner Trident Spear (Daiwa Major), while Amphitrite’s second foal, a filly, now named Trifolato (Satono Diamond), was purchased by Kazutaka Hosaka for ¥50,600,000 at the same sale in 2022, while the following year her Kizuna (Deep Impact) was bought for ¥68,200,000 at the Northern Farm Mixed Sale.

Danox Company’s Masahiro Noda has a particular affinity for the offspring of Yankee Rose (All American), who landed a pair of elite-level races as a juvenile and also came second in the Golden Slipper (Gr 1, 1200m). The mare has proved as proficient in the breeding barn as she was on the racecourse, being the dam of the multiple top-flight winner Liberty Island (Duramente).

The Triple Tiara heroine was fatally injured during the Queen Elizabeth II Cup (Gr 1, 2000m) in Hong Kong in April.

Northern Farm consigned Liberty Island’s Saturnalia (Lord Kanaloa) half-brother at the Select Sale and he was knocked down to Danox Co Limited for ¥310,000,000 (approx. AU$3,203,745).

The final figure was shy of the Y370,000,000 that Danox gave for the colt’s Lord Kanaloa three-parts brother at the foal session of the JRHA Select Sale in 2021. Now a four-year-old, Danon Mont Blanc is a three-start maiden.

As has been the case at yearling sales across Australia this year, Resolute Racing’s John Stewart made his presence felt at the Select Sale on Monday, purchasing a Kitasan Black filly from Northern Farm of ¥170,000,000 (approx. AU$1,758,480).

Stewart now has in the region of 250 horses and this filly will be making the journey from her Northern Farm home to America, her new owner confirmed by phone.

“This filly will be headed back to the States,” Stewart stated. “Hip 69 is all about the dam’s pedigree for us. I see this sale as an opportunity to bring some of the bloodlines back to the US that have been exported.

“We have a few Galileo mares and Photo Call had a nice career here in the states. Kitasan Black is really doing well and we like this as a pedigree for future breeding.”

The filly is out of US turf Grade 1 winner Photo Call, a daughter of the breed-shaping Galileo (Sadler’s Wells) and a granddaughter of Trevor Stewart’s Group 2-winning sprinter Cassandra Go, dam of Halfway To Heaven, victorious in the 1,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1m) and Nassau Stakes (Gr 1, 1m 2f).

By Pivotal (Polar Falcon), Halfway To Heaven produced two Group 1 winners by Galileo; Magical and Rhododendron, who is the dam of Auguste Rodin. Coolmore’s son by Deep Impact (Sunday Silence) triumphed in the Derby (Gr 1, 1m 4f) and is about to embark on his first southern hemisphere covering season at New Zealand’s Windsor Park Stud.

Cassandra Go is also the dam of Group 3 winner Tickled Pink (Invincible Spirit) who in turn is the dam of Saxon Warrior’s (Deep Impact) first crop Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf (Gr 1, 8f) winner Victoria Road.
