The Chris Waller-trained Surf’s Up (Flying Artie) broke through at the fourth attempt on Wednesday as she landed a 1200-metre ‘super’ maiden at Warwick Farm.
Having been placed in her previous three outings, the three-year-old daughter of Flying Artie (Artie Schiller) chose the right day to break her maiden as she defeated Mrs Maree (Written Tycoon) by 1.9 lengths under Zac Lloyd in a contest worth $100,000 to the winner.
There was a further 0.3 lengths back to the third-placed Miss Lola (Blue Point).
“She was very good first up and had a beautiful ride from Zac today,” Waller said.
“He put her in a beautiful spot from a really tricky draw [barrier nine], and I think that was the winning move.
“It’s never easy to run Nash [Rawiller, Mrs Maree] down, he’s always a good judge of pace and he got a good break on the field, but she pinned her ears back, as we say, and she reeled in the leader and it was a good win.”
Bred and raced by the Ingham family, and foaled and raised at Coolmore, Surf’s Up is a half-sister to the Group 2-placed Cigar Flick (Churchill) being the second winner out of the metro-winning mare Palmateer (Fastnet Rock), herself a half-sister to four time Group 1 scorer Fangirl (Sebring).

Palmateer has a yearling filly by Coolmore’s former shuttler Justify (Scat Daddy) and is due to foal to Zoustar (Northern Meteor), while her two-year old filly by Street Boss (Street Cry) has been named Palm Tree and is currently in work with Waller.
