The Chris Waller-trained Panova (3 f ex Love Me Quietly by Trusting) registered a deserved maiden victory at her fourth career start on Saturday when scoring in the Reginald Allen Quality (Listed, 1400m) at Randwick.

Ridden by Tommy Berry, the filly ran out a 0.7 lengths winner over Samarelle (Savabeel) with a further 1.3 lengths back to Chatterley (Snitzel) in third.

“It’s such a big day in Australian sport, and we’ve brought racing from around the world to Sydney, and we’re all very proud of it so it’s just awesome,” said Waller.

“It’s a good start to the day for our stable; a lovely ride from Tommy. He didn’t panic from a wide draw, it just shows the track’s perfect and you can win from anywhere.”

Prior to her runner-up finish on debut in July, Panova had five trials, two in the Ciaron Maher stable before a further three trials after transferring to the Waller operation.

She then finished fourth at her second career start in September before another second place finish, and the filly was ready to strike on Saturday.

“She was very unlucky not to run a place at Warwick Farm [over 1200 metres] and I said I can’t wait to get over 1400 metres. We found that today in a stakes race,” said Berry.

“It looked a bit ugly from the barrier, but I saw a bit of speed everywhere in the race, so I was hoping that would generate a bit of pressure early and we’d be able to sprint off the back of it. Getting to Randwick today, on a big track, was key.

“I was a couple of lengths off the back of them early so, when they jostled up in front of me and everybody was on heels, I was still just floating out the back.

“I was able to get on that three-wide line. I was probably the horse that had an uninterrupted run and that proved to be too good late.”

Panova was purchased for $325,000 by Ciaron Maher Bloodstock out of the Kenmore Lodge draft at the 2024 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale and runs for B2B Thoroughbreds.

She is the first foal out of Love Me Quietly (Trusting), a winning half-sister to Group 3 scorer Charge (Zoustar) from the family of Group winners Elite Falls (More Than Ready) and Niagara Falls (Danehill).

By Widden Stud’s Trapeze Artist (Snitzel), the win gifted her sire with his seventh individual stakes winner. Trapeze Artist is standing for a fee of $33,000 (inc GST).
