The Chris Waller-trained Michelangelo (Trapeze Artist) got off the mark at sixth time of asking when he broke his maiden in a 1350-metre at Wyong on Wednesday, handing his sale-bound sister a timely update in the process.

The three-year-old gelding stayed on strongly to beat Daphnes (Street Boss) by 0.1 lengths with another 0.5 lengths back to Lapis Lazuli (Microphone) in third.

“He’s not so straightforward, but he does have nice staying potential,” winning rider Tim Clark said.

“I’m sure he will improve when Chris [Waller] gets him to do things right as he’s still doing it a little bit wrong, but obviously he was good enough to get away with it today.

“A tight turning track like this probably wasn’t really suitable either, so there was good merit in the win. I’m sure now he’s got the break-through and he can go on with it.”

A $160,000 buy for Tim Roberts Bloodstock from the Widden Stud draft at the Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale, Michelangelo is out of Waltzing Wodka (Sebring).

Waltzing Wodka is a dual-winning sister to Group 2 winner and Group 1-placed mare Seaburge as well as Group 2 scorer Catch A Fire, while she also counts Group 2 winner Zloties (Snitzel) among her half-siblings.

The mare’s two other winners are headed by Listed scorer Pinito (Trapeze Artist), who also finished second in this year’s Queensland Oaks (Gr 1, 2200m).

Widden Stud will offer Michelangelo’s sister as Lot 433 at the Inglis Premier Yearling Sale next March.
