Group 1 winner Savaglee to stand at Mapperley Stud
Champion three-year-old Savaglee (Savabeel) will stand at Mapperley Stud this season after being secured by a syndicate headed by Windsor Park Stud, Mapperley Stud and Lion Rock Bloodstock. He will be introduced as a fee of $17,500 (plus GST).
Trained by Pam Gerard, the colt won seven races and over $1.2 million in prize money, highlighted by victory in the New Zealand 2,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m). He also finished runner-up in the Australian Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) and was crowned Champion Three-Year-Old of his crop.
Savaglee was also a Group 3-winning juvenile, winning on debut before claiming the Matamata Slipper (Gr 3, 1200m).
“He’s a super intelligent horse with an amazing constitution and he was tremendously sound throughout a race career at the highest level,” Gerard said.
By ten-time champion sire Savabeel (Zabeel), Savaglee is out of a sister to Symphonic (O’Reilly) – the dam of another champion three-year-old in Orchestral. It is a family that has also produced Group 1 winners Atishu (Savabeel), Sepals (Calyx), Aegon (Sacred Falls) and Daffodil (No Excuse Needed).
Mapperley Stud principal Simms Davison said the farm had been seeking a stallion prospect of Savaglee’s calibre. “We have waited patiently to find the right horse to fill the void after losing Contributer and it’s extremely satisfying to secure a colt of Savaglee’s quality,” Davison said.
