Magic Millions has assembled a world-class catalogue featuring seven Group 1 winners and 111 black type performers for its 2026 National Broodmare Sale at the Gold Coast on Tuesday, May 26 and Wednesday, May 27.
Day one of the sale will feature race fillies and maiden mares including 56 stakes horses headlined by Group 1 winners Captured By Love (Written Tycoon), Legarto (Proisir), Quintessa (Shamus Award) and Vibrant Sun (The Autumn Sun) as well as other top liners including O’ Ole (Ole Kirk), Stretan Ruler (Wild Ruler), Memo (Capitalist), Storyville (Overshare), Super Smink (Super One), Sassy Boom (Spirit Of Boom), Snitzanova (Snitzel), Military Tycoon (Written Tycoon), Aviatress (Smart Missile), Lilac (Justify), My Lips Are Sealed (Ace High), Real Class (Vadamos), Icarian Dream (Blue Point) and Roll On High (Shamus Award).
The broodmare section on day two features another 55 black type performers as well as proven Group producers and relations to present day stars and members of some of the world’s most influential families.
Among the mares catalogued on day two are in-foal Group winners such as Abbey Marie (Redoute’s Choice), Royal Merchant (Merchant Navy), Startantes (Star Turn), Amelita (Zousain), Bonvicini (Myboycharlie), Fashion Shoot (Savabeel), Impendabelle (Impending), Jennifer Lynette (Elusive Quality), Limestone (Helmet), Love You Lucy (Love Conquers All), Moonlight Maid (Puissance De Lune), Pedrena (Mossman), Seonee (Winning Rupert), Thalassophile (Not A Single Doubt), Turbo Miss (Sebring) and Vagrant (Pariah).
Three mares believed in foal to world class strike-rate sire Extreme Choice (Not A Single Doubt) will be well sought out as well as others covered by the likes of Anamoe (Street Boss), City Of Troy (Justify), Home Affairs (I Am Invincible), I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit), Ole Kirk (Written Tycoon), Stay Inside (Extreme Choice), The Autumn Sun (Redoute’s Choice), Too Darn Hot (Dubawi) and Zoustar (Northern Meteor).
“The quality in this year’s National Broodmare Sale is incredible,” Magic Millions managing director Barry Bowditch said.
“On day one 40 per cent of catalogued lots are stakes winners or stakes placed – buyers are in for a treat.
“As well as so many stars coming straight off the track or destined for more big race success, there’s a cracking line up of broodmares with appealing pregnancies.
“It’s the most important breeding stock sale in the southern hemisphere and has been the sale that started the stories of racetrack superstars including Winx, Golden Sixty, Aeliana, Autumn Glow, Sunshine In Paris, Pierro, Zoustar, Stay Inside, Imperatriz and Nature Strip.”
New Zealand mare Legarto is one of three Group 1 winners entered from across the Tasman and she is coming off victories at weight-for-age in the Herbie Dyke Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) at Te Rapa and Bonecrusher Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) at Ellerslie.
Legarto will be offered by Attunga Stud (as agent). She was voted Champion NZ 3YO Filly in 2022-23 and Champion NZ Middle Distance Horse in 2023-24. Her 3YO title came after a one-off foray to Australia when Michael Dee booted her home to become the first New Zealand winner of the Australian Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) at Flemington.
The Bonecrusher was her swansong in New Zealand and she stormed home to farewell the home crowd and trainers Ken and Bev Kelso.
“I’m very proud of this mare as she is one out of the box and a horse you only get once in a lifetime,” Ken Kelso said.
“Bev and I have been very fortunate to have had her and it’s quite emotional as it’s probably the last time we will see her racing in New Zealand.
“I thought she was a fair way from them and had a bit of work to do at one point for Opie [Bosson]. But with her turn of foot, I didn’t have any real concerns during the race.
“We weren’t going to retire until we got a Group 1 in Australia. We’ve only ever bought Group 1 horses over here and we’ve run about three seconds. It’s massive. I just can’t believe it.”
Legarto was bred and sold by Warwick Jeffries through Highline Thoroughbreds as a yearling and was purchased by part-owner Phillip Brown under his Ancroft Stud banner for NZ$90,000 at Book 2 of Karaka in 2021.
She is a daughter of champion NZ stallion Proisir (Choisir) from Trentham winner Geordie Girl (Towkay). Second dam Racing Waters (Racing Is Fun) also foaled Rapid Kay (Towkay) and Kekova (Elusive City), who were Listed winners at Taranaki and Riccarton.
