One Day At A Time (AUS)

The Tony and Calvin McEvoy-trained One Day At A Time (Bivouac) broke her maiden at the fifth time of asking on Wednesday when landing a 1000-metre contest at Sandown-Hillside.

Having run third in the Maribyrnong Trial Stakes (Listed, 1000m) on debut back in October, the juvenile daughter of Bivouac (Exceed And Excel) had since produced third and sixth placings at Eagle Farm and a fourth-placed effort in the Next Generation Sprinters Series Final (1200m) at Flemington prior to her maiden victory.

Ridden by Jye McNeil on Wednesday, the filly proved a length and a half too strong for Egyptian Dancer (Portland Sky) with a further 0.4 lengths back to the third-placed Fontalicious (Hanseatic).

“He’s [Calvin McEvoy] has always had a good opinion of her,” stable representative Mitch Whelan said. 

“She’s shown plenty. Obviously only half-a-length off them in the Maribyrnong Trial in the spring and she’s going really well.

“It’s nice to see her knock it off and Jye really deserves it as he comes in and works hard for us a couple of mornings a week. I’m just really happy for him.

“She’s always been a nice type. Probably still not a heap of horse there, but she’s growing and she’s going the right way. She’s very correct and has a lovely action and does everything well.

“Hopefully she can be a player in the spring and we’ve got something to look forward to.”

Bred by Rosemont Stud, One Day At A Time was purchased out of the stud by her trainers in conjunction with Damon Gabbedy’s Belmont Bloodstock for $270,000.

She is the second winner from three to race out of the Charge Forward (Red Ransom) mare Everyday Lady, herself a Listed winner who also finished fourth in the Robert Sangster Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m).

Everyday Lady is from the family of former Horse of the Year Weekend Hussler (Hussonet), Group 1 winner Lucky Hussler (Husson) as well as Group 3 scorers Phantom Thief (Harbinger) and Saturday Fever (Groom Dancer). She foaled a filly by Hanseatic (Street Boss) in the spring before being covered by Rosemont’s Schwarz (Zoustar).
