The Chris Waller-trained Sequinned (Pinatubo) broke her maiden at the third time of asking on Wednesday when landing an 1100-metre maiden at Randwick-Kensington.

Bagging a juvenile contest just before the season-end, the filly was resuming from a spell having run seventh in January over 1000 metres and sixth in February over Wednesday’s trip.

Ridden by Zac Lloyd, the daughter of shuttle stallion Pinatubo (Shamardal) defied her $11 odds to beat $2.50 chance Wanda’s Spark (Tagaloa) by 1.2 lengths, with the same distance further back to $2.25 favourite Eviction Notice (Stay Inside) in third.

Sequinned is a half-sister to three-time Group 1 winner and Champion Second Season Sire Bivouac (Exceed And Excel) and also to stakes scorer Coruscate (Exceed And Excel), being the seventh winner from eight foals to race out of metro-winning mare Dazzler (More Than Ready). 

“It’s a good result for Godolphin as she is an incredibly well bred horse,” stable representative Charlie Duckworth said.

“She has an excellent will to win as she had to dig deep and the speed up front definitely helped her as she can fire up a little bit. She has plenty of upside too.

“A good barrier helped and I was barely touching the reins the whole way around.

“She had a great attitude the last 300 metres the way she pins her ears back, so if she can just learn to race properly and hopefully a day out like today can get her going in the right direction.”

Dazzler, who is a half-sister to four-time Group 1 winner Guelph (Exceed And Excel) and out of the Group 1-winning mare Camarilla (Elusive Quality), has a rising two-year-old filly by Anamoe (Street Boss) called Tucana and had a filly by Cylinder (Exceed And Excel) last spring.
