A Classique offering of proven producers add spice to Chairman’s catalogue

Inglis complies 79 lots for its night of nights with 211 to go under the hammer at Australian Broodmare Sale

Inglis has confirmed a smaller select offering for its 2024 Chairman’s Sale, adding a suite of high-profile Group 1-producing mares in the lead-up to Monday night’s official release of the 79-lot catalogue.

The auction house had already announced that Group 1-winning two- and three-year-old She’s Extreme (Extreme Choice), Group 1-placed three-year-old Kimochi (Brave Smash), Tattersalls Tiara (Gr 1, 1400m) winner Startantes (Star Turn) and New Zealand and Australian Oaks (Gr 1, 2400m) winner Pennyweka (Satono Aladdin) were going under the hammer at Riverside Stables on May 9.

As the years have gone by, we’ve probably learnt more, as have the vendors, as to what ‘works’ and what is best placed in what sale

Adding further depth to the catalogue, it was announced on Monday that the dams of Everest (1200m) hero Classique Legend (Not A Single Doubt), Newgate Farm’s Golden Rose (Gr 1, 1400m)-winning sire In The Congo (Snitzel) and Coolmore Stud resident King’s Legacy (Redoute’s Choice) will be also be auctioned at the Chairman’s Sale.

In The Congo’s mother Via Africa (Var), whose daughter Autumn Glow (The Autumn Sun) topped last year’s Inglis Easter sale when selling for $1.8 million, will be offered by Newhaven Park. Tyreel Stud will consign Pinocchio (Encosta De Lago), the dam of Les Bridge’s retired grey Classique Legend and she will be offered in foal to champion sire I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit), while Segenhoe Stud will sell Breakfast In Bed (Hussonet), the dam of dual Group 1 winner King’s Legacy.

A rising 15-year-old mare, Breakfast In Bed will go under the hammer carrying a foal by Darley’s Australian Horse of the Year Anamoe (Street Boss). The Mill Park Stud co-owned Group 3-winning six-year-old Foxy Frida (Foxwedge), who is trained at Ballarat by Andrew Noblet, has also been catalogued for the sale.

While Inglis will accept wildcard entries up until Friday, April 26, so far the Chairman’s Sale offers breeders:

  • 56 stakes horses or stakes producers;
  • 40 pregnant mares on their first or second cover;
  • 69 mares aged ten or younger;
  • 32 mares that are free of Danehill blood.

Inglis Bloodstock chief executive Sebastian Hutch says it’s difficult to make comparisons between years about the quality of the Chairman’s catalogue, but he describes it as a “really good” one.

“As the years have gone by, we’ve probably learnt more, as have the vendors, as to what ‘works’ and what is best placed in what sale,” Hutch told ANZ Bloodstock News.

“Collectively, across Chairman’s and the Australian Broodmare Sale, we’ve had nice growth in our numbers for those two days, which is very pleasing because the two sales have performed really well for the last number of years.

“It’s great to get the support from people to offer quality stock, whether it’s across Chairman’s or the Australian Broodmare Sale, to have the volume of mares we have in foal on early covers is important and will be a big driver of the popularity of the sales.”

Other mares catalogued for the Chairman’s Sale include Group 1 winner Spright (Hinchinbrook) and the Group 1-placed Steinem (Frankel) and C’est Magique (Zoustar) and the Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) placegetter High Emocean (Ocean Park).

Three-time Group winner Hope In Your Heart (Dundeel), Group-winning two-and three-year-old Autumn Ballet (The Autumn Sun) will also be offered by their respective connections.

Hutch says the success of the Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale, to be held on April 7 and 8, will also be an important stimulant for buyers’ appetite to reinvest in mares, particularly at the high-end Chairman’s Sale.

“Our experience over the last number of years is that there’s a consistent demand for quality broodmares, whether it’s fillies off the track or proven producers or people just looking to target specific pregnancies, and I think there’s a lot of quality stock on offer,” he said.

A 211-lot Australian Broodmare Sale catalogue has also been released, featuring mares in foal to Zoustar (Northern Meteor), Justify (Scat Daddy), Wootton Bassett (Iffraaj), Dundeel (High Chaparral), Best Of Bordeaux (Snitzel), Artorius (Flying Artie), Jacquinot (Rubick) and State Of Rest (Starspangledbanner).

The Australian Broodmare Sale will take place on May 10.
