Eight for American Pharoah

New Group / Grade 1 winners

American Pharoah (pictured above) – US Triple Crown winner American Pharoah (Pioneerof The Nile) added an eighth individual Group 1 – and first in Australia – to his record when Riff Rocket (3 g ex Missile Coda by Smart Missile) produced a brave display to win the VRC Derby (Gr 1, 2500m) at Flemington. The stallion has now sired elite-level winners in four different countries with Australia coming after top-flight winners in Japan, France and America. Represented by 679 global runners, American Pharoah’s total stakes-winning tally sits at 40. Having shuttled to Coolmore’s Jerry’s Plains base for five seasons, the stallion did not return in 2022. American Pharoah will stand the 2024 northern hemisphere breeding season at Coolmore’s Ashford Stud in Kentucky for a slightly reduced fee of US$50,000 (approx. AU$76,800).

Blue Point – Darley shuttler Blue Point (Shamardal) was provided with his second individual elite-level winner courtesy of a victory by Big Evs (2 c ex Hana Lina by Oasis Dream) in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint (Gr 1, 5f) at Santa Anita. Bought for 50,000gns out of Book 2 at Tattersalls October Yearling Sale, Big Evs is the sixth foal out of the placed Oasis Dream (Green Desert) mare Hana Lina who herself is out of Group 1-winning juvenile Queen’s Logic (Grand Lodge). Darley announced last week that Blue Point, who has now had 110 starters, will stand the 2024 northern hemisphere breeding season for an increased fee of €60,000 (approx. AU$99,100), having stood the 2023 season for €35,000.

City Of Light – Fierceness (2 c ex Nonna Bella by Stay Thirsty) ran away with the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (Gr 1, 8.5f) at Santa Anita and in the process provided City Of Light (Quality Road) with a breakthrough elite-level winner. Racing in the colours of breeders Repole Stables, Fierceness is the third foal out of the Stay Thirsty (Bernardini) mare Nonna Bella who herself is a half-sister to, among others, Grade 1 winner turned WinStar stallion Outwork (Uncle Mo). City Of Light, who has now had 108 starters, will stand the 2024 northern hemisphere breeding season at Lane’s End Farm for a fee of US$35,000 (approx. AU$53,745).

Intello – Junko (4 g ex Lady Zuzu by Dynaformer) became the third elite-level winner for Haras de Beaumont stallion Intello (Galileo) when he landed the Grosser Preis von Bayern (Gr 1, 2400m) at Munich. Bred and raced by Wertheimer et Frere, Junko is the third foal out of the Graded-placed winning Dynaformer (Roberto) mare Lady Zuzu, herself a half-sister to Grade 3 winner and Grade 1 placegetter Optimizer (English Channel). Intello, who has had 384 starters, stood the 2023 northern hemisphere breeding season for a fee of €8,000 (approx. AU$13,180).

Justify – Hard To Justify (2 f ex Instant Reflex by Quality Road) provided Triple Crown winner and Coolmore shuttle stallion Justify (Scat Daddy) with a sixth individual elite-level scorer by taking out the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf (Gr 1, 8f) at Santa Anita. Bought by her owners Wise Racing for US$190,000 at Keeneland September Yearling Sale, Hard To Justify is the second foal out of the Graded-placed winner Instant Reflex (Quality Road). Justify, who has had 217 starters, is due to stand the 2024 northern hemisphere breeding season at Ashford Stud for a fee of US$200,000 (approx. AU$307,100), double what he stood for in 2023. Having sat out shuttling duties in 2022, the stallion is standing at Coolmore’s Jerrys Plains base for a fee of $77,000 (inc GST).

Noble Mission – Nobals (4 g Pearly Blue – Empire Maker) provided Noble Mission (Galileo) with a second individual elite-level winner when he scored in the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint (Gr 1, 5f) at Santa Anita. Sold for just US$3,500 at Fasig-Tipton’s yearling sale in October 2020, Nobals is the sixth foal out of the US turf winner Pearly Blue (Empire Maker), making him a half-brother to four winners. Pearly Blue herself is out of the US Grade 3 turf winner Western Ransom (Red Ransom). Noble Mission, who has now had 343 starters, took up stallion duties in 2015 at Lane’s End Stud, before being relocated to Japan in 2021. He stood the 2023 northern hemisphere breeding season at Shizunai Stallion Station for a fee of ¥1,500,000 (approx. AU$15,455).

Pride Of Dubai – Pride Of Dubai (Street Cry) was provided with his third top-flight winner when Pride Of Jenni (6 m ex Sancerre by O’Reilly) took out Flemington’s Empire Rose Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m). Pride Of Dubai has had 420 lifetime runners and a total of 20 individual stakes winners. The six-year-old mare joins the northern hemisphere-bred gelding Dubai Honour, winner of this year’s Queen Elizabeth Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) and Ranvet Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) and Bella Nipotina, who won Saturday’s Giga Kick Stakes (1300m) in Sydney, as the stallion’s other top-flight winners. Pride Of Dubai is commanding a fee of $27,500 (inc GST) in his eighth season at Coolmore Stud.

Wootton Bassett – Unquestionable (2 c ex Strawberry Lace by Sea The Stars) struck in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf (Gr 1, 1m) at Santa Anita to provide shuttle stallion Wootton Bassett (Iffraaj) with his ninth individual elite-level winner. Bought for €340,000 at Arqana’s Deauville August sale, Unquestionable is the second foal out of the Sea The Stars (Cape Cross) mare Strawberry Lace who herself is out of a Listed winner from the family of Bated Breath (Dansili) and Cityscape (Selkirk). Wootton Bassett, who has had 450 starters, stood the 2023 northern hemisphere breeding season for a fee of €150,000 (approx. AU$247,170). The stallion is currently covering his third book of mares at Coolmore’s Jerrys Plains base at a fee of $93,500 (inc GST).

Zoustar – Widden Stud’s leading stallion Zoustar (Northern Meteor) sired his sixth individual Group 1 winner when Ozzmosis (3 c ex No More Tears by Darci Brahma) emulated his sire by winning a thrilling edition of the Coolmore Stud Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) at Flemington. Zoustar has been represented by 768 lifetime starters and has sired 43 individual stakes winners in total. His Group 1-winning haul includes Lezoo, a filly from his first northern hemisphere crop, and she will go under the hammer at the Tattersalls December Mare Sale next month. Zoustar is in the midst of his tenth season in the breeding shed, where he is standing for a career-high fee of $220,000 (inc GST).

New stakes winners

Acclamation – Rathbarry Stud-based sire Acclamation (Royal Applause) registered his 67th individual stakes winner courtesy of Orne’s (2 c ex Pellucid by Excelebration) victory in the Horris Hill Stakes (Gr 3, 7f) at Newmarket. Orne was bought for 120,000gns at Book 2 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale and he is out of Group 3-placed mare Pellucid (Excelebration), herself a half-sister to Group 2 scorer Space Traveller (Bated Breath). Acclamation, who has now had 1,347 starters, stood the 2023 northern hemisphere breeding season for a fee of €27,500 (approx. AU$45,300).

Capitalist – Kaizad (3 g ex Baby Corn by Exceed And Excel) landed Flemington’s Carbine Club Stakes (Gr 3, 1600m) and in the process handed Newgate Farm-based stallion Capitalist (Written Tycoon) with his 16th individual stakes winner. Out of Listed winner Baby Corn (Exceed And Excel), Kaizad is a brother to stakes-placed winner Socialist, while he is a half-brother to Group 1 performer Cornrow (Duporth). Capitalist, who has had 331 runners, stands for a fee of $77,000 (inc GST).

Churchill – Coolmore shuttler Churchill (Galileo) registered a 15th individual stakes winner – and first in Hong Kong – when his son Encountered (4 g ex Enrol by Pivotal) landed the Sa Sa Ladies’ Purse (Gr 3, 1800m) at Sha Tin. Encountered is out of stakes-placed mare Enrol (Pivotal), making him a three-quarter brother to Group 2 winner and Group 1 placegetter Royal Scotsman (Gleneagles). Churchill’s stakes winners are headed by three top-flight winners including last month’s Toorak Handicap (Gr 1, 1600m) winner Attrition. The stallion, who has had 384 starters, is serving his sixth book of mares at Coolmore’s Jerrys Plains base at a fee of $22,000 (inc GST).

Connect – Curlin’s (Smart Strike) son Connect sired his 11th individual stakes winner courtesy of a success by Witwatersrand (2 f ex Carta De Oro by Medaglia D’Oro) in Woodbine’s Mazarine Stakes (Gr 3, 8.5f). Witwatersrand is out of the Grade 2-performed winning Medaglia D’Oro (El Prado) mare Carta De Oro. Connect, who has had 201 starters, will stand the upcoming breeding season at Lane’s End Farm for US$15,000 (approx. AU$23,000).

Deep Impact – The late Deep Impact (Sunday Silence) reached a double century of individual stakes winners when Zeffiro (4 c ex Wild Wind by Danehill Dancer) landed the Copa Republica Argentina (Gr 2, 2500m) at Tokyo. Out of the Listed-winning and Group 1-placed Danehill Dancer (Danehill) mare Wild Wind, Zeffiro is a half-brother to stakes winner Wild Bud (Dubawi). Japanese Triple Crown winner Deep Impact, who was champion sire in Japan for nine consecutive years between 2012 and 2020, has had 1,716 starters.

Dubawi – Darley stalwart Dubawi (Dubai Millennium) sired his 266th individual stakes winner when Salesman (6 g ex High Maintenance by Highest Honor) struck in the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance Stakes (Gr 2, 13f) on the Breeders’ Cup undercard. Carrying the colours of his breeders Wertheimer & Frere, Salesman is the seventh foal out of the Group-placed winner High Maintenance (Highest Honor) making him a half-brother to, among others, multiple Group 1 winner Solow (Singspiel). Dubawi, who has had 1,634 starters, will stand the 2024 northern hemisphere breeding season at Dalham Hall Stud for an unchanged fee of £350,000 (approx. AU$665,130).

Fine Needle – Culture Day (2 f ex L’Artista by Meiner Love) landed Kyoto’s Sho Fantasy Stakes (Gr 3, 1400m) to become the second individual stakes winner from 94 starters for Darley Japan’s Fine Needle (Admire Moon), who stood the 2023 northern hemisphere breeding season at a fee of ¥2,000,000 (approx. AU$20,560).

Frankel – Regal Jubilee (2 f ex Regal Realm by Medicean) became the 133rd individual stakes winner for Juddmonte Farms’ flagship sire Frankel (Galileo) when scoring in Newmarket’s Montrose Fillies’ Stakes (Listed, 1m). The sixth foal out of the Group 3-winning Medicean (Machiavellian) mare Regal Realm, Regal Jubilee is a three-quarter brother to Group 3 scorer Regal Reality (Intello). Frankel, who has had 776 starters, stood the 2023 northern hemisphere breeding season at Banstead Manor Stud for a fee of £275,000 (approx. AU$521,900).

Ghostzapper – Ghostzapper (Awesome Again) edged closer to his century of individual stakes winners when his son Two Ghosts (2 g ex Celia’s Song by Distorted Humor) took the Grey Stakes (Gr 3, 8.5f) at Woodbine to move his tally onto 98. Bought for US$85,000 at Keeneland as a yearling in September 2022, Two Ghosts is out of Celia’s Song (Distorted Humor) who herself is a daughter of Grade 2 winner Warbling (Unbridled’s Song). Ghostzapper, who has now had 988 starters, will stand the upcoming breeding season at Hill ‘N Dale Farms for a fee of US$75,000 (approx. AU$115,175).

Henny Hughes – Seraphic Call (3 c ex Chant De L’Ange by Manhattan Cafe) became the 46th individual stakes winner for Henny Hughes (Hennessy) when scoring in the Miyako Stakes (Gr 3, 1800m) at Kyoto. Out of the Manhattan Cafe (Sunday Silence) mare Chant De L’Ange, Seraphic Call is a half-brother to winner Sunrise Earth (Rey De Oro). Henny Hughes, who has now had 1,282 starters, stood the 2023 northern hemisphere breeding season at Yushun Stallion Station for a fee of ¥5,000,000 (approx. AU$51,510).

Holy Roman Emperor – Castlehyde Stud resident Holy Roman Emperor (Danehill) brought up a century of individual stakes winners when Vischio (6 m ex Drifting Mist by Muhtathir) landed the Finale Stakes (Listed, 1m 4f) at the Curragh. Vischio is the second foal out of the Group-placed winning Muhtathir (Elmaamul) mare Drifting Mist. Holy Roman Emperor, who has now had 1,748 starters, stood the 2023 northern hemisphere breeding season for a fee of €10,000 (approx. AU$16,520).

Kingman – Juddmonte Farms stallion Kingman (Invincible Spirit) was handed his 75th individual stakes winner when Opera Mundi (2 f ex Solage by Galileo) scored in the Prix Zeddaan (Listed, 1400m) at Deauville. Opera Mundi is the only winning foal out of the Listed-winning Galileo (Sadler’s Wells) mare Solage. Kingman, who has now had 615 starters, stood the 2023 northern hemisphere breeding season at Banstead Manor Stud for a fee of £125,000 (approx. AU$237,550).

Lope De Vega – Salocin (6 g ex Alkania by Dalakhani) made a belated breakthrough in black-type company when he landed the Grand Prix de Nantes (Listed, 2200m) and in the process became the 122nd individual stakes winner for Lope De Vega (Shamardal). The fourth foal out of the Dalakhani (Darshaan) mare Alkania, Salocin is a half-brother to Listed-placed winners Argyron (Iffraaj) and Amaranthe (Mastercraftsman). Lope De Vega, who has now had 1,234 starters, stood the 2023 northern hemisphere breeding season at Ballylinch Stud for a fee of €125,000 (approx. AU$207,190).

More Than Ready – Amazonian Lass (3 f ex Dynastic Lady by Fastnet Rock) handed More Than Ready (Southern Halo) his 223rd individual black-type winner when landing Flemington’s Wakeful Stakes (Gr 2, 2000m). A $325,000 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale buy, Amazonian Lass is out winner Dynastic Lady (Fastnet Rock), herself a sister to New Zealand Group 1 winner Age Of Fire. Amazonian Lass became the 83rd individual stakes winner for More Than Ready in Australia and they are headed by 12 Group 1 winners. Represented by 3,094 lifetime starters, More Than Ready shuttled to Vinery Stud for an extraordinary 19 consecutive seasons. He died last year at the age of 25.

Muhaarar – Hugely progressive filly Sparks Fly (3 f ex Stepping Out by Tagula) provided her sire Muhaarar (Oasis Dream) with his 24th individual stakes winner when she ran out an impressive scorer of the Prix Isola Bella (Listed, 1600m) at Saint-Cloud. The fourth foal out of the three-time winner Stepping Out (Tagula), herself a sister to stakes-placed winner Duchess Dora, Sparks Fly is a half-sister to Group-placed scorer Caroline Dale (Lethal Force) and winner Baby Steps (Paco Boy). Muhaarar, who has now had 366 starters, stood the 2023 northern hemisphere breeding season at Haras des Faunes for a fee of €7,500 (approx. AU$12,490).

Nathaniel – Understated (3 f ex Catalyst by Makfi) became the 34th individual stakes winner for Newsells Park Stud stallion Nathaniel (Galileo) when landing the Prix Solitude (Listed, 2000m) at Saint-Cloud. Running in the colours of Australian Bloodstock, Understated is the only flat winner to come out of the winning Makfi (Dubawi) mare Catalyst, herself a half-sister to Ever Rigg (Dubai Destination) who in turn is the dam of four-time elite-level winner turned Darley stallion Postponed (Dubawi). Nathaniel, who has now had 619 starters, stood the 2023 northern hemisphere breeding season for a fee of £15,000 (approx. AU$28,560).

Night Of Thunder – Former shuttler Night Of Thunder (Dubawi) earned his 40th individual stakes winner when Romantic Style (2 f ex Sweety Dream by Dream Ahead) landed the Bosra Sham Fillies’ Stakes (Listed, 6f) at Newmarket. The filly is the 16th individual juvenile stakes winner for Night Of Thunder, who shuttled to Australia for one season in 2016. The stallion has been represented by five individual stakes winners in Australia and they are headed by 2021 Queensland Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) winner Kukeracha. Night Of Thunder, who has now had 393 starters, is set to stand the 2024 northern hemisphere breeding season at Darley’s Kildangan Stud for an unchanged fee of €100,000 (approx. AU$165,200).

Suave Richard – Shadai Stallion Station resident Suave Richard (Heart’s Cry) sired his first stakes winner courtesy of Corazon Beat’s (2 f ex Le Ciel d’Or by Orfevre) success in the Keio Hai Nisai Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) at Tokyo. Suave Richard, who has now had 54 starters, stood the 2023 northern hemisphere breeding season for a fee of ¥2,000,000 (approx. AU$20,560).

Tavistock – The late Tavistock (Montjeu) chalked up his 46th individual stakes winner courtesy of Pudding’s (5 g ex Christmas Day by Zabeel) win in the John Letts Cup (Listed, 1800m) at Morphettville. Pudding was bought by his trainers for NZ$65,000 at Book 1 of the New Zealand Karaka Yearling Sale in 2020 and he is out of winning Zabeel (Sir Tristram) mare Christmas Day, herself a half-sister to Group 3 winner New Tipperary (High Chaparral). Further back this is the same family as multiple Group 1 winners Assertive Lad (Zeditave) and Assertive Lass (Zeditave). Tavistock, who has had 743 starters, died at Cambridge Stud in 2019.

Union Rags – Wet My Beak (4 f ex Who’s In Town by Speightstown) became the 31st individual stakes winner for Lane’s End Farm resident Union Rags (Dixie Union) when she landed the Ken Maddy Stakes (Listed, 6.5f) at Santa Anita. Union Rags, who has now had 682 starters, will stand the 2024 northern hemisphere breeding season for a fee of US$15,000 (approx. AU$23,000).

War Front – Seal Team (3 c ex  Mrs McDougal by Medaglia D’Oro) became the 115th individual stakes winner for War Front (Danzig) when the colt took out the Twilight Derby (Gr 2, 9f) at Santa Anita. A home-bred for Bass Stables, Seal Team is out of the Grade 2-winning Medaglia D’Oro (El Prado) mare Mrs McDougal. War Front, who has now had 801 starters, is due to stand the 2024 northern hemisphere breeding season at Claiborne Farm for an unaltered fee of US$100,000 (approx. AU$153,565).

Worthy Cause – Clear Mountain Fairview-based stallion Worthy Cause (Choisir) chalked up his second stakes winner when Cause For Concern (4 g ex Rock Paper Sissors by Fastnet Rock) landed The Damien Oliver (Gr 2, 1400m) at Flemington. Cause For Concern is out of the four-time winner Rock Paper Sissors and hails from the same family as Group 2 scorer The Lions Roar (Western Symphony), herself the dam of Group 2 winner Growl (Montjeu) and Listed scorer Leeu (Volksraad). The sire of 32 runners, Worthy Cause’s other stakes winner is Group 1 scorer Hinged. The stallion is standing for a fee of $5,500 (inc GST).
