Four for Shalaa

New first season sire winners
Shalaa
Tidal Impact (2 f ex Eventide by Dane Shadow) pulverised her opposition on debut at Coonamble on Sunday to provide first season sire Shalaa (Invincible Spirit) with his fourth individual southern hemisphere winner. Trained by Damien Lane, Tidal Impact landed the Southern Cross Turf Boot Prelude (1100m) by nine and a half lengths on Heavy 8 ground. The Storm In Me (Press Statement) finished second, with Look At Yah (Skyclad) a further three quarters of a length back in third. Tidal Impact is out of Eventide (Dane Shadow), a half-sister to stakes performers Extreme Impact (Snitzel) and Wine Night (Playing God). Arrowfield shuttler Shalaa, the sire of Breeders’ Plate (Gr 3, 1000m) and Magic Millions 2YO Classic (RL, 1200m) winner Shaquero, is currently standing at Haras de Bouquetot in France for a €15,000 (approx AUD$23,100) stud fee. 


Sooboog
Boudica’s Gift (2 f ex Celtic Queen by Sadler’s Wells) landed the QTIS 2YO Fillies Maiden (1200m) at Rockhampton on Saturday to provide first season sire Sooboog (Snitzel) with his fifth individual winner from just 12 runners. The John Wigginton-trained filly improved on her third-placed finish on debut to get off the mark with a head victory over Top Ceedee (Top Echelon). Agustawynd (Spill The Beans), the $1.85 favourite, was a further nose behind in third. Boudica’s Gift, a $33,000 buy from last year’s Magic Millions Gold Coast March Yearling Sale, is the sixth winner from eight runners out of Celtic Queen (Sadler’s Wells). Boudica’s Gift’s win takes Sooboog to within one of Capitalist (Written Tycoon) in the leading first season sires by winners table, with Flying Artie (Artie Schiller) also on five. Sooboog stood at Kitchwin Hills for a 2020 stud fee of $13,200.


Star Turn
Stellar Magic (2 f ex Al’s Magic Miss by Magic Albert) got off the mark at her second start on Sunday to earn Vinery Stud’s first season sire Star Turn (Star Witness) his fourth individual winner, just four days after Startantes provided him with his third. The Steven O’Dea and Matthew Hoysted-trained filly finished runner-up on her sole start in the spring and comfortably went one better in the 1015-metre maiden at Grafton, running out a two and a half-length winner over Mabel (Dream Ahead). Vicky’s One (Super One) was another one and three-quarter lengths back in third. Out of Magic Miss (Magic Albert), Stellar Magic was bought for $100,000 by Proven Thoroughbreds from the Yarraman Park draft at last year’s Inglis Classic Sale. Earlier in the week, Startantes (2 f ex Funtantes by Easy Rocking) won impressively at Eagle Farm. The Robert Heathcote-trained filly finished second to the unbeaten Sequesay (Rothesay) on debut at Ipswich last month and went one better with ease over 1200 metres on Wednesday, defeating Mishani Untamed (Husson) by two lengths, with her stablemate Mishani Esprit (Bel Esprit) a further head behind in third. Star Turn, the sire of Breeders’ Plate (Gr 3, 1000m) third Astrologer, stood at Vinery last year for $16,500 (inc. GST)

New Group/Grade 1 winners
Eurozone
The Tony Gollan-trained Krone (5 m ex Soft Landing by Al Maher) provided Eurozone (Northern Meteor) with his first elite-level winner when taking out the Coolmore Classic (Gr 1, 1500m) at Rosehill on Saturday. The five-year-old followed up her last-start Guy Walter Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) win with a one-and-a-quarter-length defeat of Mizzy (Zoustar). Dame Giselle (I Am Invincible) was a further long-neck behind in third. Krone is the best of three stakes winners by Eurozone, who has also sired Listed winners Mystery Love and Global Impact-Tagmaster (Macau). Eurozone stood at Bellereve Racing and Breeding Stables for $5,500, where he covered just 15 mares last year.

Ocean Park
Ocean Billy (5 g ex Cool Storm by One Cool Cat) took out the Auckland Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) at Ellerslie on Saturday to provide Ocean Park (Thorn Park) with his third individual elite-level winner. The Bill Pomare-trained five-year-old finished two and a quarter lengths ahead of runner-up Charles Road (Myboycharlie), with Sound (Lando) a further head behind in third. Waikato Stud Stallion Ocean Park, who is also the sire of Group 1 winners Tofane and Kolding, stood for a 2020 stud fee of NZ$20,000.

Snitzel
Sword Of State (2 c ex In the Vanguard by Encosta De Lago) impressively landed the Sistema Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) at Ellerslie on Saturday to become Snitzel’s (Redoute’s Choice) 15th individual elite-level winner. The Jamie Richards-trained colt put himself firmly into the Golden Slipper (Gr 1, 1200m) picture with a three-and-a-half-length win over On The Bubbles (Brazen Beau). Bonny Lass (Super Easy) was another length and a half behind in third. Arrowfield Stud stallion Snitzel, the sire of 108 individual stakes winners, stood for a service fee of $165,000 (inc. GST) last year.

New stakes winners
Astern
The Mark Kavanagh-trained Seradess (2 f ex Obsidian Dragon by Hidden Dragon) took out the Cinderella Stakes (Listed, 1050m) in emphatic fashion at Morphettville last Monday to provide Darley Stud’s Astern (Medaglia D’Oro) with his first stakes winner. The two-year-old filly was sent off a $51 chance when dead-heating with Cloudy (Frosted) on debut at Bendigo last month and she remained unbeaten with a five-and-a-quarter-length trouncing of her six rivals under Jamie Kah. Roxy Blue (Air Force Blue) finished second, with Bolsonaro (Winning Rupert) another two and a quarter lengths back in third. Purchased by her trainer for $50,000 out of the Mill Park Stud draft at last year’s Magic Millions Adelaide Yearling Sale. Seradess is the first winner from three to race out Obsidian Dragon (Hidden Dragon). She provided 2016 Golden Rose Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) winner Astern with his first winner to date last month. The first season sire shuttler has had 11 runners so far and is currently standing at Darley’s American base for US$7,500 (approx. AUD$9,800).

Barbados
Struck By (3 g ex Cheers Rihanna by General Nediym) took out the Morphettville Guineas (Listed, 1600m) last Monday to earn Barbados (Redoute’s Choice) his second individual stakes winner. The Travis Doudle-trained gelding brought up a hat-trick of wins with a long-neck defeat of Milton Park (Written Tycoon). Angelic Scent (Teofilo) was a further length back in third. Struck By took his record to four wins from seven starts with this success and he has only finished out the placings on one occasion. He is the second winner and first stakes success out of Cheers Rihanna (General Nediym). Barbados stood at Ducatoon Park in South Australia last year for a fee of $4,400.

Dubawi
British import Ironclad (5 g ex Heat Haze by Green Desert) took Dubawi (Dubai Millenium) to within two of a double century of individual stakes winners after taking out the CS Hayes Cup (Listed, 1600m) at Morphettville. The Will Clarken-trained five-year-old brought up a hat-trick of wins at the track with a one-and-a-half-length defeat of Ritratto (Fiorente). Lord Vladivostok (Tavistock) was a head further back in third. Ironclad was a two-time winner in Britain while under the care of Hugo Palmer, but has excelled since coming to Australia and is unbeaten from his three southern hemisphere starts. He is the second stakes winner out of dual Group 1 winner Heat Haze (Green Desert), who is the dam of October’s Metropolitan Handicap (Gr 1, 2400m) winner Mirage Dancer (Frankel). Heat Haze foaled a sister to Mirage Dancer last year. Dubawi once again stands at Dalham Hall Stud for a fee of £250,000 (approx. AUD$444,300) this year.

Footstepsinthestand
Mums Tipple (4 g Colomone Cross by Xaar) bounced back to form on the all-weather at Wolverhampton on Saturday to land the Bombardier Lady Wulfruna Stakes (Listed, 7f), providing Footstepsinthestand (Giant’s Causeway) with his 66th individual stakes winner. The Richard Hannon-trained gelding made an emphatic start to his race career, winning his second start over six furlongs by a remarkable eleven lengths, but was winless in six subsequent starts before Saturday. Sent off a 9-2 chance under Ryan Moore, Mums Tipple defeated Lord Of The Lodge (Dandy Man) by two and a quarter lengths, with Highland Dress (Shamardal) four lengths behind the winner in third. Coolmore’s Footstepsinthesand is standing at Castlehyde Stud in Ireland for a fee of €12,500.

Gris De Gris
Group 2 winner Gris De Gris (Slickly) sired his first stakes winner when Padron (4 c ex Marianabaa by Anabaa) downed his more fancied rivals to strike in Thursday’s Prix Altipan (Listed, 1600m) at Saint-Cloud. The Jerome Reynier-trained four-year-old was winning for the fourth time in eight starts as he got the better of Celestin (Dabirsim) and Alpen Rose (Sea The Stars). Gris De Gris stands at Haras de Tierce for a fee of €2,300 (approx. AUD$3,540).

Intello
Haras de Quesnay resident Intello (Galileo) sired his 14th individual stakes winner when his daughter Anasia (3 f ex Sosia by Shamardal) made a winning return to action by taking out the Prix Rose de Mai (Listed, 2000m) at Saint-Cloud on Thursday. Trained by Andre Fabre, the filly, who was Group 3-placed as a juvenile, registered her second win in five starts when just holding on to deny favourite Mystery Angel (Kodi Bear) by a neck. Thunder Drum (Dubawi) was another length away in third. Intello stands for a fee of €10,000 (approx. AUD$15,400).  

Lucas Cranach
Flash Aah (5 g ex Never Despair by Hotel Grand) took out the Australian Turf Club Trophy (Listed, 1400m) at the Gold Coast on Saturday to provide the late Lucas Cranach (Mamool) with his first individual stakes winner. The Mitchell Fry-trained Flash Aah defied his $31 odds with a three-quarter-length defeat of Top Prospect (Swiss Ace). The $3 favourite Socialising (Bel Esprit) was two lengths behind the winner in third. Flash Aah is the sole runner out of three-time winner Never Despair (Hotel Grand). Lucas Cranach died in September last year after moving to Leneva Park Stud in Victoria.

Maurice
Eighteen three-year-old fillies went to post in the Fillies’ Revue (Gr 2, 1400m), Japanese 1,000 Guineas Trial, at Hanshin on Sunday and the Kunihiko Watanabe-trained Shigeru Pink Ruby (3 f ex Moonlight Bay by High Chaparral) came out on top to become the second individual stakes winner for her sire Maurice (Screen Hero). The winner of her debut over course and distance in November, Shigeru Pink Ruby was unplaced on her only other start in the Hanshin Juvenile Fillies (Gr 1, 1600m) in December. The winner tracked the pace on the rail, got daylight at the two furlong marker, and picked up well to run down Yoka Yoka (Squirtle Squirt) and score by a neck. There was a further length back to Minnie Isle (Mikki Isle) in third. Former Arrowfield shuttler Maurice stands at Shadai Stallion Station for a fee of  ¥8 million (approx. AUD$94,500).  

Myboycharlie
Grandslam (3 c ex Mine Game by General Nediym) produced a devastating performance in the Alister Clark Stakes (Gr 2, 2040m) at Moonee Valley on Saturday to earn Myboycharlie (Danetime) his 21st individual stakes winner. The Ciaron Maher and David Eustace-trained colt, who finished third in last year’s Caulfield Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m), broke his stakes duck with an emphatic six-and-a-quarter-length win over Young Werther (Tavistock). Explosive Jack (Jakkalberry) finished seven lengths behind the winner in third. A $600,000 Magic Millions purchase from Gilgai Farm, Grandslam is a brother to three-time Group 1 winner Jameka and a half-brother to Sires’ Produce Stakes (Gr 2, 1350m)-placed Nikitas (Snitzel). Former shuttle stallion Myboycharlie was sold to the Turkish Jockey Club in 2019.

Nicconi (pictured above)
The John Maloney-trained Scorched Earth (2 f ex Scorched by Exceed And Excel) followed her devastating Magic Millions SA 2YO Classic (1200m) win with a victory in the St Albans Stakes (Listed, 1200m) at Moonee Valley on Saturday, providing Nicconi (Bianconi) with his 21st individual stakes winner. Scorched Earth, who finished runner-up in the Blue Diamond Prelude (Gr 2, 1100m) as a maiden, raced to a three-quarter-length win from Dio (Zoustar), a sister to Sunlight, with Wizard Of Oz (Exceed And Excel) another three lengths away in third. Scorched Earth will now head to the spelling paddock ahead of a spring campaign. The two-year-old is the third winner from three runners to race out of Exceed And Excel (Danehill) mare Scorched. Nicconi, the sire of five-time Group 1 winner Nature Strip, stood at Widden Stud last year for a service fee of $27,500 and will relocate to Widden Victoria in 2021.

Press Statement
Equation (3 c ex Purcentage by Onemorenomore) provided both Press Statement (Hinchinbrook) and trainer Annabel Neasham with their first stakes winners after taking out the Canberra Guineas (Listed, 1400m) under Tommy Berry last Monday. Equation, who has won four consecutive races after finishing sixth on debut, defeated High Supremacy (Savabeel) by three-quarters of a length, with the fast-finishing Kermanding (Kermadec) a further short-head back in third. Purchased by Aquis Farm for $110,000 from the Sledmere Stud draft at the 2018 National Weanling Sale, Equation is the second foal and first to race out of Purcentage (Onemorenomore), whose Russian Revolution (Snitzel) yearling filly was purchased by Triple Crown Syndications for $195,000 out of the Sledmere draft at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale earlier this year. Dual Group 1 winner Press Statement stood at Vinery Stud for $13,750 last year.

Redoute’s Choice
Three-year-old filly Miravalle (3 f ex Condesaar by Xaar) became the 178th individual stakes winner for the late Redoute’s Choice (Danehill) when winning the Kembla Classic (Gr 3, 1600m) on Friday, as she burst through in the closing stages sporting the silks of Arrowfield Stud, where her sire left his legacy before his death in March 2019. Bred by Kulani Park, Miravalle was a $460,000 purchase from the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale in 2019 by Rick Worthington, trainer and breaker, who educated Arrowfield’s horses for 30 years until his death in September last year. Out of Condesaar (Xaar), Miravalle is a half-sister to ATC Sires’ Produce (Gr 1, 1400m) winner and Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) runner-up Yankee Rose (All American). The mare was purchased for $320,000 by Rosemont Stud out of the Magic Millions Broodmare Sale in 2018, with a yearling sister to Miravalle selling for $500,000 to Bahen Bloodstock and Matt Laurie Racing at the Magic Millions Gold Coast sale this year. She has a Starcraft (Soviet Star) filly at foot and was placed in foal to Exceedance (Exceed And Excel) last year.

So You Think
Good Idea (6 g ex Faint Perfume by Shamardal) landed the Adelaide Cup (Gr 2, 3200m) at Morphettville last Monday to become So You Think’s (High Chaparral) 32nd individual stakes winner. The Phillip Stokes-trained six-year-old finished runner-up in the race last year but comfortably went one better this time around with a three-and-a-half-length success over $81 chance Eperdument (Americain). Long Arm (Rock Of Gibraltar) was a head further back in third. Good Idea is the second stakes winner out of 2009 VRC Oaks (Gr 1, 2500m) winner Faint Perfume (Shamardal), after his half-brother Chains Of Honour (Redoute’s Choice) took out the Gran Prix Stakes (Gr 3, 2206m) in 2019. So You Think, Australia’s busiest sire last year having covered a book of 261 mares, stood at Coolmore for $38,500 (inc. GST) in 2020.
