Inglis Australian Weanling Sale catalogue released

The catalogue for the sale that can lay claim to sourcing this season’s Blue Diamond (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Hayasugi (Royal Meeting), Silver Slipper (Gr 2, 1100m) winner Straight Charge (Written By) and Light Fingers (Gr 2, 1200m) winner Kimochi (Brave Smash) has been released.

A 448-lot catalogue, comprising progeny of a host of leading sires including Juddmonte’s champion sire Frankel (Galileo), I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit), Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice), Zoustar (Northern Meteor), Written Tycoon (Iglesia) and Proisir (Choisir), has been compiled by Inglis for its 2024 Australian Weanling Sale.

The two-day sale will take place at Riverside Stables in Sydney on Monday, May 6 and Tuesday, May 7, as a lead-in to the Inglis Chairman’s Sale which will be held on May 9, followed by the Australian Broodmare Sale on May 10.

Inglis Bloodstock chief executive Sebastian Hutch says this year’s catalogue, on paper, is the best Inglis has put together since he joined the company six years ago.

“That only means a certain amount until you see the horses in the flesh, but certainly on paper it’s the best catalogue we’ve put together,” Hutch told ANZ Bloodstock News.

“The sale has genuinely good momentum which has been developed over a number of years from the perspective of vendors and buyers. For vendors, it’s been a good sale for a number of years.

“There’s been good clearance and participation from a broad cross-section of buyers at all levels right the way through, from expensive foals to horses at the lower end of the market and I think people have taken confidence from that.

“Similarly, for buyers it is consistently generating results, none more so than the past 12 months, pinhookers have done well out of the sale and most encouragingly end users have had an excellent run out of this sale. There’s been Hayasugi, Kimochi, Straight Charge and Master Fay. It has genuinely established itself as a source of good racehorses.”

The first public exposure to the first crop foals by the likes of Golden Slipper (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Stay Inside (Extreme Choice), Coolmore’s sprinting sensation Home Affairs (I Am Invincible), Darley’s multiple Group 1-winning shuttler Pinatubo (Shamardal), Portland Sky (Deep Field) and Wild Ruler (Snitzel).

Weanlings by Wootton Bassett (Iffraaj), Toronado (High Chaparral), Street Boss (Street Cry), Deep Field (Northern Meteor), Dundeel (High Chaparral) and Capitalist (Written Tycoon) as well as those by emerging stallions such as Alabama Express (Redoute’s Choice) and Zousain (Northern Meteor) also feature among the catalogue.

Hutch is confident that the pinhooking segment of the buying bench will once again be in play  come the Australian Weanling sale.

“Allowing for some of the challenges in the market, there’s still been good liquidity and the clearance rate has ended up at respectable levels at all the yearling sales [so far this year],” Hutch said.

“People who have taken stock to the sales have generally been able to sell it.

“That is something we can take confidence from and, ultimately, for a lot of people who are pinhooking stock, certainly in the case of a lot of them, they’re not breeders, so if you want to be participating, the weanling sales is something you’ve got to work very hard at.”

All weanlings sold at the Australian Weanling Sale are eligible for the $12.55 million Inglis Race Series, which features the $2 million Inglis Millennium (RL, 1100m) for two-year-olds as well as the $5 million Xtra Bonus Series and $1 million Pink Bonus.

Supplementary entries for the Australian Weanling Sale remain open until April 26, as will entries for the Inglis Great Southern Weanling Sale to be held at Oaklands Junction in Melbourne on June 13 and 14.
