Ciaron Maher may be thinking about a high-class spring campaign with juvenile colt Kaleo after the son of Churchill (Galileo) scored an impressive victory in the $150,000 Remembering Margaret McDonald Handicap (1400m) at Caulfield on Saturday.
Making his second career start, having run a debut fourth in the Mornington Sires (1200m), the colt was ridden by Ethan Brown and scored by 1.8 lengths over VOBIS Gold Plate (1400m) scorer Prestige Ole (Ole Kirk).
“He’s got the makings of a nice colt who should get over a little but further,” Maher’s assistant Jack Turnbull said.
“You’d love to be thinking about spring with a colt of this calibre now. Whether we go one more and keep him at 1400 – there’s an option on the 17th of May at Flemington – but if not we can wait and the main thing is we got today out of the way.”
Bred by Dr R McClenahan, Kaleo was a $150,000 buy for John Foote Bloodstock and SCT Syndications from Mullalgass Stud’s draft at the 2024 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale.
He is the first foal out of three-time winner Sensitivity (I Am Invincible), who herself is out of Flight Stakes (Gr 1,1600m) runner-up Sensibility (Redoute’s Choice). The mare has subsequently produced a Pierro (Lonhro) half-brother to Kaleo, who sold to Cornerstone Stud for $90,000 at the Inglis Australian Weanling Sale earlier this week.
