Karaka Day 5: ANZ Bloodstock News’ top lots
The second day of New Zealand Bloodstock’s Book 2 offering features a varied cross-section of first season, up–and–coming young sires as well as the more established stallions. Today is also the last chance to get involved if you have so far missed out.
Mongolian Khan (Holy Roman Emperor) – winner of the New Zealand Derby (Gr 1, 2400m), Australian Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) and Caulfield Cup (Gr 1, 2400m) in 2015 – is quietly getting some winners now his first crop has turned three. Chaparella (High Chaparral), a dual Listed winner of eight races and dam of Highview Stud’s filly, Lot 757, could not do much better as a producer with two stakes horses from three foals to race, including Listed winner Riva Capri (Atlante).
Lot 766 is a Vadamos (Monsun) colt from a winning Commands (Danehill) mare. She is a half-sister to versatile Listed winner Johnny Reb (Naturalism), the winner of 14 races including the National Sprint (Listed, 1400m) at Canberra, and to Power Of Pegasus (Palace Music), the Listed winner of ten races.
Haunui Farm’s Charm Spirit (Invincible Spirit) filly, Lot 770, has a lovely line-up of sires on her dam’s side of the pedigree. Apart from being a half-sister to Group 3 winner Shees Flawless (Fully Fledged), her dam is by Fastnet Rock (Danehill) and her granddam is by Conquistador Cielo (Mr Prospector).
Charm Spirit is also the sire of Woburn Farm’s Lot 772, the half-brother to Listed winner Mohaka (Nadeem). His granddam won six races, including three in Adelaide, and is a half-sister to the dam of twice Hong Kong Horse of the Year, dual Group 1 winner Ambitious Dragon (Pins).
Iffraaj (Zafonic) is the sire of Kiltannon Stables’ colt, Lot 773. He is out of an Exceed And Excel (Danehill) half-sister to Gobi Ranger (Tale Of The Cat), winner of the Eclipse Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) at Ellerslie and third in the New Zealand 2,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m). He is closely related to champion Desert War (Desert King).
Highview Stud will offer their Wrote (High Chaparral) filly, Lot 781. Her dam won five and was Listed-placed. Her granddam, Besty Coup (Justice Prevails), was South Island Filly of the Year and won seven times, including the Canterbury Belle Stakes (Listed, 1200m) and the Wairarapa Breeders’ Stakes (Listed, 1600m).
Lot 794, a colt by Tivaci (High Chaparral), is the only lot in Book 2 being offered by Waikato Stud and he is out of a Savabeel (Zabeel) sister to recent Group placegetter Grand Bouquet (Savabeel) and half-sister to the Listed-placed Snowdrop (Pins). The colt’s granddam is Daffodil (No Excuse Needed), a triple Group 1 winner including the Australian Oaks (Gr 1, 2400m).
The Per Incanto (Street Cry) three-quarter brother to stakes winner Lanciato (Per Incanto) is Lot 821 from Wainui Ltd. Lanciato won seven times in New Zealand and Australia, including the Newmarket Handicap (Gr 3, 1400m) at Newcastle as well as the Carrington Stakes (Listed, 1400m) at Randwick.
Little Avondale Stud’s first season sire Time Test (Dubawi) is the sire of Lot 830, a filly from the stakes-placed, six-time winner Ima Lady (Howbaddouwantit). The filly’s granddam is a half-sister to Railway Handicap (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Silver Liner (Sovereign Edition). The next dam, Ajasco (Pakistan II), also won the Railway.
Woburn Farm will offer Lot 838, a colt by first season sire War Decree (War Front). His dam, Irish Encore (Darci Brahma), won six races, including two at Te Rapa. His granddam is a half-sister to Group 3 winners Madison Point (Palace Music) and Dollars’n Gold (Palace Music) and is closely related to Group 1-winning two-year-old Iflooxcouldkill (Daggers Drawn).
Mapperley Stud’s Lot 840, a filly by their resident sire Contributer (High Chaparral), is from an Ellerslie-winning Volksraad (Green Desert) half-sister to South African Group 3 winner The Centenary (Mastercraftsman). Her third dam is a three-quarter sister to Octagonal (Zabeel). This is, of course, the famous Eight Carat family.
Lot 841 is Highden Park’s Satono Aladdin (Deep Impact) colt. His dam won five races, including three at Awapuni, and is herself a half-sister to Wazawatsyn (Tuscany Flyer), winner of ten races, including two runnings of the Eclipse Stakes (Listed, 1200m) at Wingatui and the Timaru Stakes (Listed, 1400m) at Riccarton.
Cambria Park will offer Lot 842, a filly by Proisir (Choisir). The filly’s dam, Katy Keen (Zorro’s Lad), won ten times, including seven in succession. Four of her wins were in stakes company, the Travis Stakes (Gr 2, 2000m) at Te Rapa, the Rotorua Cup (Gr 3, 2170m) and two Listed races.
Lot 854 is Kiltannon Stables’ Burgundy (Redoute’s Choice) filly from La Etoile (Thorn Park), whose five wins included the Rich Hill Mile (Gr 2, 1600m) at Ellerslie. She was also four times stakes-placed, including third in the Queensland Guineas (Gr 2, 1600m), and her granddam, Domino (Grosvenor), won both the Australian Oaks (Gr 1, 2400m) and the New Zealand Oaks (Gr 1, 2400m).
Wrote is the sire of Lot 871, a filly from the draft of Highview Stud. Her dam is a winning sister to Za Magic (Magic Albert), winner of the Doomben Classic (Gr 3, 1615m) and the Sunshine Coast Guineas (Listed, 1600m). The filly is a direct descendant of champion Surround (Sovereign Edition).
Lot 905 is a filly by Vadamos being offered by CH Bloodstock. She is a half-sister to Group 2-placed Jimmy Lincoln (Jimmy Choux) and Listed-placed Amor Fati (Showcasing). Her granddam, Laurel Avenue (Avenue of Flags), was a Listed winner in the United States and is also the granddam of Group 2 winner El Daana (Redoute’s Choice).
