Stakes-placed filly Marsept (Written Tycoon) broke her maiden at the fifth time of asking on Wednesday when running out an easy winner of an 1125-metre maiden as the long odds-on favourite.
Sent off a $1.30 shot having been Listed-placed as a juvenile and runner-up on her latest start over 1200 metres at Caulfield, the Team Hawkes-trained daughter of Written Tycoon (Iglesia) cruised to a 3.3 lengths success over Varadero (Star Witness).
“She’s a Saturday class filly, not a maidener, but it’s always good to get the maiden out of the way,” Wayne Hawkes, who trains in partnership with his brothers Michael and John, told Racing.com.
“Nothing really went wrong [last prep], she just didn’t seem to come up. This time she’s just been going gangbusters.
“Caulfield the other day, you’ve got a maiden trying to take on the more experienced horses, and it took a smart one to actually beat her.
“That’s how you want $1.30 pops to win… it was trackwork, to be honest.”
Winning rider Jye McNeil, who had ridden the filly to both her Listed placing and last-start runner-up finish, was also impressed with the effort.
“I always thought she’d be very hard to beat, obviously, but she was very impressive today,” he said.
“She was absolutely going absolutely airborne before Caulfield, and she’s probably improved since then. She absolutely toyed with them today.
“You don’t see horses win like that very often now and she was completely dominant.”
Bred by Yulong, Marsept was purchased by Vinery Stud for $300,000 at the 2024 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale and is the only winner from three to race out of the Listed-placed Sebring (More Than Ready) mare Motown Lil.
