Just a week after it was announced that Southport Tycoon (Written Tycoon) had retired to stand at Widden Stud, Bennett Racing unearthed yet another talented progeny of Written Tycoon (Iglesia) in the shape of juvenile filly Military Tycoon who broke her maiden in impressive fashion in the Ottawa Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m) at Flemington.

Trained by Ciaron Maher, Military Tycoon finished seventh on debut in the Maribyrnong Plate (Gr 3, 1000m), but returned to Flemington with a superb win on Saturday.

Ridden by Thomas Stockdale, Military Tycoon defeated Cinderella Stakes (Listed, 1050m) winner Gin Spirit (Spirit Of Boom), with Pure Passion (Snitzel) finishing a further 0.4 lengths away in third.

“She’s always shown that sort of ability and it unravelled for her during the Cup Carnival,” Maher said.

“She trialled up really nicely and Tom [Stockdale, jockey] has done a good job. There is hardly a horse in the stable that I have of Bennett Racing’s that doesn’t have some sort of ability. They do a very good job of selecting their horses and you can see they’ve got a huge crew of owners so it is fantastic. They just retired Southport Tycoon to stud so hopefully this is their next group horse.”

Bred by Merricks Station, the filly was a $200,000 buy for Bennett Racing from the Emirates Park draft at the 2024 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale. Military Tycoon is the third foal and third winner out of the Listed-scoring Universal Ruler (Scenic) mare Military Reign.

Military Reign has also produced a yearling filly by The Autumn Sun (Redoute’s Choice) who sold to Simon Zahra Racing for $120,000 at the recent Inglis Premier Yearling Sale, and she has a colt at foot by So You Think (High Chaparral). She was covered by Alabama Express (Redoute’s Choice) last November.

In winning the Group 3, Military Tycoon became a 73rd individual and 20th two-year-old stakes winner for Yulong Stud’s marquee stallion Written Tycoon.

Military Tycoon will now likely head to Sydney, where she holds nominations for the Sires’ Produce (Gr 1, 1400m) and Percy Sykes Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m).
