Peltzer’s Buccleuch routs rivals at Flemington

Buccleuch (Peltzer) has given Patrick and Michelle Payne something to look forward when he posted his third consecutive victory and first at stakes level in Saturday’s Taj Rossi Series Final (Listed, 1600m) at Flemington, providing Twin Hills Stud’s first-season sire Peltzer (So You Think) with his first stakes winner.

Carrying the colours of his breeder Sandy Tait, whose son Olly owns and runs Twin Hills, the gelding kicked off the hat-trick of victories with a win over 1412 metres at Echuca on June 3, which he followed up with a triumph over 1420 metres at Flemington two weeks later.

Again under Billy Egan on Saturday, he continued his picket fence form when easily pulling away from his rivals to beat Bermondsey (Hanseatic) by 3.3 lengths. Arcora (Justify) was another 0.4 lengths away in third.

Michelle Payne was well pleased with Buccleuch, though she believes the autumn will be his real time to shine.

“He’s just still learning what it’s all about,” she said.

“He got a bit keen – I don’t think they were going overly fast up front, which probably makes his win a little bit better.

“Just a lovely horse, he’s always showed us really nice potential.”

“He [Patrick] thinks he might be a bit of a horse better for the autumn, rather than the spring.

“He’s been on – I didn’t want to say it before the race – a bit of a working holiday, through the wintertime, and if he could pick something up along the way, even better.”

Sandy Tait was collecting the race for the second time having owned and also bred 2020 winner Cherry Tortoni (Night Of Thunder).

Buccleuch is the second winner from stakes-placed Fastnet Rock (Danehill) import Golden Fastnet, a half-sister to Group 3 winner Wind Chimes (Mastercraftsman)

Wind Chimes topped the Inglis Digital June (Early) Sale when selling to Ben Kwok for $305,000 in foal to Wootton Bassett (Iffraaj).

Golden Fastnet died last year, but has a yearling colt by Twin Hills resident Hallowed Crown (Street Sense) and had a filly last spring by Prized Icon (More Than Ready).

Buccleuch is one of three winners for Peltzer, who will stand the 2025 season for a fee of $11,000 (inc GST).

Buccleuch headlined a fine stakes double for the Paynes, with Jimmy The Bear (Jimmy Creed) also saluting in the VRC-CRV Winter Championship Series Final (Listed, 1600m) on the same card.
