The stable of Ben, Will and JD Hayes unearthed yet another talented juvenile on Wednesday as Savannah Chill (Savabeel) delivered an impressive performance to win on debut at Sandown.
Ridden by Daniel Stackhouse, the filly jumped from barrier five in the six-horse field, settling one out, one back, before looming up at the 500–metre mark, and extending nicely to take the lead 100 metres from home for a 0.5–length win ahead of the Too Much Too Soon (Too Darn Hot), with Celestra (I Am Invincible) another 1.25 lengths behind in third.
“She’s always been a very professional horse,” a stable representative told Racing.com.
“She’s had a couple of experiences out, especially at Werribee where she trialled up really well and [Daniel Stackhouse] had a sit on her, so getting that replicated here is a good thrill for the owners and the team.”
The rider was also impressed with the filly’s performance and said: “Obviously it was testing conditions out there. I really liked her trial at Werribee last week, and it was quite a heavy track that day, and I thought she was doing her best work through the line. So I was actually quietly confident that if I got the right run in transit that she would be very strong late, and she was,” Stackhouse said.
Bred by Waikato Stud and Gary Wallace, the daughter of Savabeel (Zabeel) was purchased by Lindsay Park Racing for $100,000 at the 2024 NZB Karaka Yearling Sale.
Savannah Chill is a sister to Rowley Mile (Listed, 1600m) winner Savacool (Savabeel), and is the 12th foal out of unraced mare Chilled Out (Anabaa).
