Seraphox (Harry Angel) showed the benefit of race experience at Warwick Farm on Wednesday, shedding his maiden tag in good style under James McDonald for trainer Ciaron Maher.

The son of Darley’s underrated sire Harry Angel (Dark Angel) was far from disgraced on debut in the Todman Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) when seventh, beaten only 4.1 lengths by the more experienced winner Paradoxium (Extreme Choice) after covering ground throughout.

The flashy chestnut duly franked that effort with a professional display back in maiden grade.

Settling just off the speed, Seraphox was briefly held up on straightening before sprinting through to hold off the late challenge of The Roaring Sun (The Autumn Sun) and score by 0.4 lengths, with Rolling Home (Bivouac) finishing third, another 2.2 lengths adrift.

Stable representative Amy Burke said the colt had taken natural improvement from his first outing.

“He’s a lovely horse and they’ve had a bit of an opinion of him from the beginning,” Burke said.

“His run in the Todman was far from disgraced… he got caught wide and still stuck on well. He has really come on from that run, even in his demeanour… he’s the ultimate professional and a very nice horse going forward.”

McDonald echoed that sentiment, suggesting the colt would improve further with time. “He’s a nice progressive horse who will only excel as he gets further,” he said.

A $220,000 Inglis Ready2Race purchase for Ciaron Maher and Starblue Consultancy out of Baystone Farm, Seraphox has been through the sales ring multiple times, having first sold as a weanling for $65,000 before making $90,000 as a yearling.

Bred by Miss M Jeffcoat, he is the first foal out of Foxwedge (Fastnet Rock) mare Foxy Touch and hails from the family of Group 2 winner and Golden Slipper (Gr 1, 1200m) fourth Campione D’Italia (Snitzel), who is set to contest Saturday’s Inglis Sires’ Produce Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) at Randwick.
