Fourth stakes winner for Belardo

New first season sire winners

Belardo

Belardo’s (Lope De Vega) fantastic year continued when his son Belloccio (2 c ex Three Cards by Mastercraftsman) maintained his unbeaten record in the Criterium du Languedoc (Listed, 1600m) at Toulouse and in the process provided his sire with his fourth individual stakes winner. Trained in Britain by David Menuisier, Belloccio followed up his recent win at Salisbury by defeating favourite Cirona (Maxios) by a length and a quarter. Kergrist (Milanais) was another neck away in third. Haunui Farm shuttler Belardo will have his first southern hemisphere two-year-olds this season, while Darley last week announced Belardo would stand at Kildangan Stud in Ireland for an unchanged €10,000 (approx. AUD$16,150) in 2021. At the weekend, Belardo secured his fifth stakes winner and first in New Zealand, when Avonallo (2 c ex Real Angel by O’Reilly) landed the Welcome Stakes (Listed, 1000m) at Riccarton. The Jamie Richards-trained juvenile pulled two lengths clear of his eight rivals under Opie Bosson. Follow Your Dreams (Contributer) ran second, while Global Beauty (Highly Recommended) was a further two and a quarter lengths further back in third.

Worthy Cause
Ain’t She Lovely (2 f ex Backpacker Express by Big Brown) took out a 1100-metre maiden at Ipswich on Wednesday to provide first-season sire Worthy Cause (Choisir) his maiden winner with just his second runner. The John Zielke-trained Ain’t She Lovely, bred by Dovedeen Stud, had finished unplaced in her first two starts but was nothing short of impressive on Wednesday. Sent off a $4.40 chance under Georgina Cartwright, the filly made all and quickened nicely in the straight to defeat Portobello Road (Dream Ahead) by one and threequarter lengths, with Air Force Rocket (Air Force Blue) finishing four lengths behind the winner in third. The Group 3-winning Worthy Cause stands at Clear Mountain Fairview Stud for a fee of $5,500 (inc. GST) in 2020. His only other runner to date, Star Twinkle, finished unplaced at Toowoomba in September and has not been seen since.

New Group/Grade 1 winners

Darci Brahma

The Oaks Stud’s Darci Brahma (Danehill) brought up Group 1 winner number 11 on Saturday when Kahma Lass (3 f ex Distinctive Lass by Orientate) took out the New Zealand 1000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) for trainer Jamie Richards and rider Opie Bosson. Darci Brahma stands for NZ$15,000 (plus GST) in 2020.

New stakes winners

Adlerflug

Mythico (2 c ex Madhyana by Monsun) proved best of the two-year-olds in the Herzog von Ratibor-Rennen (Gr 3, 1700m) at Krefeld on Sunday, bringing Adlerflug (In The Wings) his 16th individual stakes winner. The Jean-Pierre Carvalho-trained colt was winless ahead of the Group 3 contest, but had placed in the Preis des Winterfavoriten (Gr 3, 1600m) on his last appearance and made no mistake when lining up in the same class again. He got the better of the Henk Grewe-trained Dolcetto (Gleneagles) by half a length, with favourite Virginia Storm (Soldier Hollow) two lengths behind the winner in third. Adlerflug stood at Gestut Schlenderhan in Germany for a fee of €10,000 (approx. AUD$16,300) in 2020.

All Too Hard

Vinery Stud Stallion All Too Hard (Casino Prince) sired his 18th individual stakes winner when Allibor (3 g ex Libor Lady by Exchange Rate) took out the Sandown Guineas (Gr 2, 1600m) for trainer Symon Wilde and jockey Dean Yendall. The three-year-old prevailed by the minimum of margins over Sweet Reply (Deep Field), with a further length and three-quarters back to Valanetti (Sebring) in third. Returning $4.40, Allibor fended off the $2.70 favourite Sweet Reply despite idling in the closing stages to join the likes of dual Group 1 winner Behemoth and Australian Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) hero Alligator Blood as stakes winners for his sire, who is standing for a fee of $27,500 (inc GST) in 2020. Allibor was purchased from Book 1 of the Inglis Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale in 2019, being knocked down to his trainer and Cameron Cooke Bloodstock for $60,000 from the draft of Blue Gum Farm.

Camacho

Alkes (2 f ex Rags by Whipper) emerged victorious in the Criterium Femminile (Listed, 1500m) at Rome to provide Yeomanstown Stud stallion Camacho (Danehill) with his 18th individual stakes winner. Having broken her maiden over the same course and distance on October 6, the Danilo Pierdomenico-trained Alkes made a successful transition to Listed company. Memo De L’alguer (Mehmas) finished second as Arriva Veloce (Night Of Thunder) was third. Camacho, who will stand for a fee of €5,000 (approx. AUD$8,140) in 2021, is the sire of Poule d’Essai des Pouliches (Gr 1, 1600m) winner Teppal.

Coulsty

Sopran Aragorn (2 c ex City Maiden by Carson City) took out the Premio Rumon (Listed, 1500m) at Rome to provide Rathasker Stud resident Coulsty (Kodiac) with his third stakes winner. Third-up following two placed efforts at Milan, Sopran Aragorn fended off the challenge of Midnight Season (War Command) and Bjorn (Acclamation), who arrived into the contest unbeaten in two outings. Group 3 winner and Group 2-placed Coulsty will stand for a fee of €4,000 (approx. AUD$6,500) in 2021, while his progeny to date include Princess Margaret Stakes (Gr 3, 6f) winner Santosha.

Deep Impact

Late Shadai Stallion Station resident Deep Impact (Sunday Silence) sired his 165th individual stakes winner when Red Belle Aube (2 c ex Red Fantasia by Unbridled’s Song) continued on his upward curve in the Nisai Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m) at Hanshin. Trained by Hideaki Fujiwara, the promising juvenile broke his maiden second-up at Chukyo in September, and he comprehensively built on that form when getting the better of Ho O Amazon (King Kamehameha) by a head, with a further length and a quarter back to Super Hope (Kizuna) in third. Out of a placed Unbridled’s Song (Unbridled) half-sister to Spinster Stakes (Gr 1, 9f) winner In Lingerie (Empire Maker), Red Belle Aube was following in the footsteps of his year old brother Red Bel Jour, who took out the corresponding race 12 months ago for the same connections.

Dundeel

Arrowfield Stud resident Dundeel (High Chaparral) brought up his 13th individual stakes winner when Truly Great (5 g ex Truly Special by Jeune) took out the R J Peters Stakes (Gr 3, 1500m) at Ascot. Sent out an odds-on favourite having won five of his previous nine starts, including two straight this preparation, the Grant and Alana Williams-trained Truly Great produced a terrific turn of foot on the soft track, sweeping home to defeat Flow (Street Cry) by a length and a half with the same margin back to Moschard (Moshe) in third. Truly Great is the fourth winner out of Perth-based stayer Truly Special (Jeune), who has also produced WA Oaks (Gr 3, 2400m) winner Special Alert (Not A Single Doubt) and Esperance Cup (2015m) hero Truly Gold (Nicconi). Dundeel stands for $66,000 (inc GST) in 2020.

Kendargent

A narrow win for Skazino (4 g ex Skallet by Muhaymin) in the Grand Prix de Marseille (Listed, 2000m) was enough to provide Kendargent (Kendor) with his 33rd individual stakes winner. Scoring for the ninth time in 20 starts, the four-year-old edged out favourite Kenway (Galiway) by a short head. There were four lengths back to Diamond Vendome (Style Vendome) in third. Skazino is the third foal out of Skallet (Muhaymin), making him a brother to Group 2 winner Skalleti and the Listed placed Skalleto. Kendargent will stand at Haras de Colleville for a reduced fee of €10,000 (approx. AUD$16,280) in 2021.

Le Havre
Montfort et Preaux resident Le Havre (Noverre) notched his 41st individual stakes winner when his daughter Karlarina (3 f ex Karsabruni by Speedmaster) made it back-to-back wins by taking out the Prix Denisy (Listed, 3100m) at a soggy Saint-Cloud. Trained by Stephanie Nigge, the recent Clairefontaine winner beat Sheraz (Sea The Stars) by three lengths with a massive 20 lengths further back to the third-placed Pontille (Whipper) as the majority of the field struggled to cope with the testing conditions. Le Havre, the sire of five individual Group 1 winners, will stand for a fee of €40,000 (approx. AUD$65,235) next year.

Night Of Thunder

Promising filly Suesa (2 f ex Sally Is The Boss by Orpen) impressively took out the Prix Yacowlef (Listed, 1100m) at Chantilly to earn former Darley shuttler Night Of Thunder (Dubawi) his 18th individual stakes winner. The Carlos Laffon-Parias-trained two-year-old followed up her debut win at Chantilly last month with a two-length success over Total Knockout (Exosphere), with Night Hunting (Amarillo) another two lengths back in third. The two market leaders, Dense Star (Starspangledbanner) and Ideal Beauty (Invincible Spirit), could only finish fourth and fifth respectively. Night Of Thunder, winner of Newmarket’s 2,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1m) in 2014, stands at Kildangan Stud in Ireland where his fee for 2021 has been set at €75,000 (approx. AUD$122,000) on the back of having supplied 26 stakes performers from his first two crops.

Orfevre

Bio Spark (5 h ex Nanayo Tiara by Meiner Love) narrowly took out the Fukushima Kinen (Gr 3, 2000m) at Fukushima under Kenichi Ikezoe to bring up Orfevre’s (Stay Gold) tenth individual stakes winner. The Tamio Hamada-trained five-year-old saw off favourite Vin Quet Domingo (Rulership) by a neck, with Godolphin’s Territorial (Teofilo) a further length behind in third. Japanese triple crown winner Ovfevre, who has two Group 1 winners to his name in Epoca D’Oro and Lucky Lilac, stands at Shadai Stallion Station for a 2020 fee of JPY3,000,000 (approx. AUD$39,500).

Proisir

Rich Hill Stud resident Proisir (Choisir) sired his third individual stakes winner when Aimee’s Jewel (4 m ex Aimee’s Idol by Colombia) fought out the finish to the Canterbury Breeders’ Stakes (Gr 3, 1400m) at Riccarton with her close relation Irish Girl (El Roca). Aimee’s Jewel powered home from last to claim her maiden stakes success at start five, half a length in front of her niece, Irish Girl. Aimee’s Jewel is the seventh foal of Listed winner Aimee’s Idol (Colombia). Aimee’s Idol won six times and twice recorded stakes placings including second in the Foxbridge Plate (Listed, 1200m). She ranks as a three-quarter blood sister to the Singapore stakes winner Ready To Strike (Colombia). Both descend from the speedy Kingston Star (Biscay), a dual Listed stakes winner in Melbourne. Irish Girl is out of two-times winner Aimees Babe (Postponed), the first foal of Aimee’s Idol and therefore a half-sister to Aimee’s Jewel, keeping the lion’s share of the prize-money in the family. Aimees Babe died in 2018 and Irish Girl is her only foal.

Redoute’s Choice

Late Arrowfield Stud flagbearer Redoute’s Choice (Danehill) sired a pair of new Group 3 winners on Saturday. The Elanora (3 c ex Yesterjoy by More Than Ready) landed the Spring Stakes (Gr 3, 1600m) at Newcastle for Chris Waller, taking his record to two wins from four outings with a half-length victory over High Supremacy (Savabeel). Ellsberg (Spill The Beans) was a further two and a quarter lengths adrift in third. Later, Celebrity Queen (4 m ex Celebrity Miss by More Than Ready) took out the Colonel Reeves Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m) at Ascot to become the 177th individual stakes winner for Redoute’s Choice, who was euthanised at the age of 23 last year following a traumatic loss of mobility.

Reset

The Ciaron Maher and David Eustace-trained Junipal (5 g ex Palatine Hill by Palace Music) took out the Sandown Stakes (Gr 3, 1500m) by a length and a quarter to become the 34th individual stakes winner for former Darley stallion Reset (Zabeel). Last seen running ninth in the Toorak Handicap (Gr 1, 1600m) having previously landed handicap wins at Moonee Valley and Caulfield, Junipal came home too strong for Kenya (Galileo), while Buffalo River (Noble Mission) was a further length adrift in third. Reset was pensioned from stallion duties last year and his roll of honour is headlined by Victoria Derby (Gr 1, 2500m) winner Rebel Raider, Caulfield Cup (Gr 1, 2400m) scorer Faulkner and Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m) hero Pinker Pinker.

Savabeel

New Zealand champion sire Savabeel (Zabeel) brought up his 105th individual stakes winner when Hindaam (3 f ex Bayrock by Fastnet Rock) took out the Twilight Glow Stakes (Listed, 1400m) at Sandown. Sent out as second favourite with Daniel Stackhouse aboard, the Tom Dabernig and Ben Hayes-trained filly, sporting the colours of Sheikh Hamdan’s Shadwell operation, swept home from last down the centre of the track to defeat La Mexicana (I Am Invincible) by a half-length with Star Of Uma (I Am Invincible) a further length and three-quarters away in third. Bred by Windsor Park Stud, Hindaam is out of the placed mare Bayrock (Fastnet Rock), a sister to Coolmore stallion Merchant Navy and Group 1-placed Jolie Bay. Offered by Kitchwin Hills at the 2019 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, she was purchased by Shadwell Stud for $825,000. Savabeel stands for NZ$100,000 (plus GST) at Waikato Stud in 2020.

Sebring

Black On Gold (7 g ex Fools Gold by Commands) battled well under a smart ride from Brenton Avdulla to take out the Ladies Day Cup (Listed, 1600m) at Hawkesbury, providing Sebring (More Than Ready) with his 64th individual stakes winner in the process. Sent off a $19 chance, the Chris Waller-trained Black On Gold cut the corner entering the straight and pulled clear of the field up the inside, defeating Archedemus (Lope De Vega) by three-quarters of a length, with Savacool (Savabeel) two lengths behind the winner in third. Despite having won seven times in 43 previous starts, this was a first at stakes level for the seven-year-old. Sebring, winner of the 2008 Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) stood at Widden Stud before dying from a heart attack aged 13 last year.

Shanghai Bobby

Black Horus (5 h ex Julia’s Star by El Prado) took out the Premio Chiusura (Listed, 1400m) at Milan on Sunday to earn Shanghai Bobby (Harlan’s Holiday) his 35th individual stakes winner. The Luciano Bietolini-trained five-year-old just got up ahead of Cirfandli (Overdose) in a three-way finish, with Visayas (Cable Bay) a close-behind third. Shanghai Bobby, a dual Grade 1 winner as a two-year-old, retired to stud in 2014 and stood at Ashford Stud, before being sold to Japan to stand at Arrow Stud in Hokkaido in 2018.

Shamardal
The late Shamardal (Giant’s Causeway) sired his 151st individual stakes winner when his daughter Ummalnar (5 m ex Royal Secrets by Highest Honor) proved to be a cut above her rivals in Friday night’s Cooley Stakes (Listed, 1m) at Dundalk. Trained in Newmarket by William Haggas, the five-year-old showed why connections sent her on her travels as she came home six lengths clear of runner-up Surrounding (Lilbourne Lad). Pretty In Grey (Brazen Beau) finished another length and a half away in third. Ummalnar, who was winning for the fourth time in eight starts, is a half-sister to globetrotting Grade 1 winner Sheikhzayedroad (Dubawi).

Shocking

Rich Hill Stud resident Shocking (Street Cry) registered his 11th individual stakes winner when Dragon Storm (6 g ex Prize Lady by Prized) took out the New Zealand Cup (Gr 3, 3200m) at Riccarton. Ridden by Craig Grylls, the Chris Gibbs-trained Dragon Storm defeated another son of Shocking, Lincoln King, by a half-head, with a further two lengths back to Hurry Cane (Nom Du Jeu) in third. With sire and dam both previous Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) runners – Prize Lady (Prized) finishing 17th in 2008, a year before Shocking’s success – perhaps it is no surprise that Dragon Storm won a big two-mile event in November. Dragon Storm is the third foal to race out of Prize Lady, a two-time Auckland Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) winner, but the first to salute at stakes level; second dam Pen Bal Lady (Mummy’s Game) was a three-time Grade 1 winner in California. Dragon Storm was offered for sale twice, purchased for NZ$55,000 from the Wentwood Grange draft at the 2016 Karaka Premier Yearling Sale before being reoffered at the NZB Ready To Run Sale the same year; he was bought for NZ$150,000 by Kylin Horse Group. Shocking stands for NZ$8,000 (plus GST) in 2020.

So You Think

Carif’s (5 h ex Norzita by Thorn Park) win in the Sandown Cup (Listed, 3200m) provided Coolmore resident So You Think (High Chaparral) with his 30th individual stakes winner. The 14-year-old, whose outstanding race record included ten Group 1 successes, is also the sire of Quick Thinker, Nakeeta Jane and Sopressa. He stands for $38,500 (inc GST) in 2020.

Street Boss

Anamoe (2 c ex Anamato by Redoute’s Choice) broke his maiden with a short-head success in the Merson Cooper Stakes (Listed, 1000m) at Sandown to provide Darley stallion Street Boss (Street Cry) with his 41st individual stakes winner. The Godolphin homebred, who is trained by James Cummings, built on the form of his Debutant Stakes (Listed, 1000m) fifth when repelling the challenge of Forbes (Capitalist), while The Art Of Flying (Flying Artie) was a further two and three-quarter lengths away in third. A half-brother to Leopardstown Listed winner Anamba (Shamardal), Anamoe is one of four winners from Australasian Oaks (Gr 1, 2000m) heroine Anamato (Redoute’s Choice). Street Boss is standing for a fee of $27,500 (inc. GST) at Darley’s Northwood Park this year.
