Yulong expands into Hunter Valley with the purchase of legendary Segenhoe Stud
Yulong has announced the acquisition of Segenhoe Stud, marking a significant milestone in the company’s expansion into Australia’s premier thoroughbred breeding region, the Hunter Valley.
This acquisition underlines Yulong’s long‑term commitment to the Australian bloodstock industry, joining their already fully established Victorian farm.
Spanning 1,400 acres, Segenhoe Stud is widely regarded as one of the jewels of the Hunter Valley. The Segenhoe brand has amassed an excellent record of success since its inception in 1908, producing high-profile Group 1 winners such as Pride Of Jenni (Pride Of Dubai) and Joliestar (Zoustar), alongside a large rollcall of stakes performers over the past decade.
Its enduring reputation is built not only on results at the highest level both on the track and at auction, but also on more than a century of careful stewardship and breeding excellence.
Set across fertile river flats complemented by undulating hills, Segenhoe’s pastures create an ideal natural environment for the growth and development of the thoroughbred. Every aspect of the farm has been thoughtfully designed and refined over time to support horses at all stages of their lifecycle, from foaling through to racetrack performance and beyond into their breeding careers.
Kevin Maloney, chairman of Segenhoe Stud, said he was proud of the 18 Group 1 winners bred at the property over the past 15 years of ownership.
“Segenhoe has been run as a family enterprise and the family is pleased to welcome Yulong as the new owners, particularly given the professional approach it has demonstrated with its other racing interests,” Maloney said.
The farm will become Yulong’s first New South Wales‑based stallion operation, strengthening the company’s footprint in Australia and providing breeders with additional access to Yulong’s ever-growing roster.
“Natural progression and expansion of our colt purchases, both as yearlings and racehorses, has led to us now focusing on developing a stallion facility in New South Wales” said Yulong’s chief operating officer, Sam Fairgray.
“We have a beautiful property and facilities in Victoria, along with some regally bred bloodstock, and this operation will continue to remain a strong focus for us. Our stallion barn however filled very quickly so to expand the operation to both states was the next logical step in Yulong’s development.”
A comprehensive redevelopment of existing infrastructure at Segenhoe is planned which will include the construction of a new stallion barn and purpose‑built serving facilities capable of accommodating up to ten stallions.
Yulong’s general manager, Jun Zhang, said: “This is not simply an expansion of our footprint, but a reflection of our confidence in the future of the Australian thoroughbred industry.
“We believe Segenhoe provides an outstanding foundation to build a world-class stallion operation in New South Wales, and we are committed to investing in its people, its horses and its long-term success.”
Since Yulong’s inauguration, every Victorian stallion with runners has produced stakes winners and Group 1 level performers from their first crop, a trend Fairgray says the operation aims to continue on new pastures.
“We plan to continue this trend with our new sires,” Fairgray added.
“Standing stallions that we believe will work with the Australian broodmare population is what we set out to achieve and we welcome breeders to call and discuss mating plans with any of our team.”
