Zapateo

Zapateo

2 f Brazen Beau – Jerezana by Lonhro

Trainer: James Cummings

Race: Neds Handicap (1100m)

The well-related Zapateo (Brazen Beau) will bid to maintain her unbeaten record in the Neds Handicap (1100m) at Caulfield today.

The Godolphin-raced filly justified favouritism on debut at Geelong last month with a comfortable three-quarter-length success over Nasdana (Not A Single Doubt).

Running over the same distance today, Zapateo looks likely to be sent off a short price again in the two-year-old fillies’ handicap, in which she is the only representative from James Cummings’ stable after stablemate Vianello (Teofilo) was scratched.

Damian Oliver will again ride the lightly-raced Zapateo from barrier four, with connections hoping they will be rewarded for their patient approach to the two-year-old’s racing career.

One of five winners from as many to race out of Listed winner Jerezana (Lonhro), who was also placed in Group 3 company, Zapateo is a half-sister to two Godolphin stakes performers.

The best of those is Group 2 winner Osborne Bulls (Street Cry), who agonisingly finished runner-up in five consecutive Group 1 contests between February and May in 2019, including the Lightning Stakes (Gr 1, 1000m), Newmarket Handicap (Gr 1, 1200m) and All Aged Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m).

The other is Badajoz (Commands), who finished second in the National Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) as a juvenile before going on to place multiple times in Listed company.
